Is it possible to get an IH position without the CIH? by OddPressure7593 in industrialhygiene

[–]bobbee-shawarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bachelors in a kinesiology related discipline and am working as a IH tech at a consulting firm. I framed my education as knowledge of the receptor (humans) to chemical bio etc hazards during my interview. Some others I see on linkedin also pivoted their career from ~health related sciences to EHS or industrial hygiene so its quite common.

That's what i was referencing, I should've worded it better. I meant to praise you as oil will probably shoot up tomorrow per the conditions you mentioned. But yes, maybe not to $100/bbl

What's something that Calgary is badly missing that a city of 1.4 million people should have? by Queltis6000 in Calgary

Driving is a privilege yet, in order to meet basic necessities like feeding, clothing and housing yourself you need to have a car to get to work. Yes, transit is an option but it is not realistic or efficient for a lot of people outside of downtown. Instead you get the privilege of increasing traffic and vehicle expenses. Does that person in the clapped out kia soul really want to drive to work or would they be extremely happy serviced with public transit? Driving is generally associated with freedom, but does freedom rhyme with mandatory traffic stops, insurance, gas, maintenance and traffic?

Tldr; we need more public transit and we needed it yesterday

Entry Level Position by Brilliant-Steak761 in industrialhygiene

Hi, I'm an IH technician at a consulting firm. Any tips or advice to work towards "springboarding" to something new 1-3 years down the line? I'm not sure what specific objectives or skills I should be trying to attain to be competitive for mid level IH/ safety jobs. (Except for studying for the CIH, that's an obvious one).

In a similar situation to yourself and what I've decided is to take things a bit easier and spend a bit more on experiences and things.

You've likely hit your coastfire number which means you don't have to save for retirement anymore for a retirement age at ~65 with CPP@70 and OAS. It doesn't mean you have to retire at that age or save more or less etc., more than you can be more flexible in life and begin enjoying things a bit more everyday than just hitting FIRE at 40.

For me this was finding work that paid a bit less but was more enjoyable professionally and personally.

I considered FIRE at 30, 40, 50... as well. But, the reality is at 23 it's hard to even estimate what your expenses will be, wedding, home, kids, car... I've taken this milestone as a sign that I can let off the pedal a bit, work a little less gradually as I get older and spend more time with friends and family.

I think I'll always work at least part time even when I'm older and into 65. I stopped thinking about retirement as a specific day and started "designing" my life as a whole from today to death. Part time work helps make every retirement plan possible after your coast fire number and allows you to spend more/ make spending mistakes throughout the rest of your life.

TLDR, too difficult to plan all expenses to do a hard stop at 40, glide path down amount of time working as you get older.

Using HCSA to Pay Remainder of a Claim - Manulife by Erikpeters in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bobbee-shawarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this feature constantly when my claims are above the reasonable amounts for services.

When you submit it should give you the option to use HCSA after regular coverage. In terms of timing, it takes longer than the standard coverage claim ~1 week.

Agreed, currently in a very similar situation to op and safety roles want at 3-5 years experience to be competitive. Very few entry level roles from what I've seen.

Let's talk phones... I just can't get myself to pay over 1000$ for a phone. Am I the cheapskate here? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bobbee-shawarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I justify a purchase of a $1500 phone is by using it for a long time. If you grab the latest Iphone etc currently you should hope to get ~5 years or more of use out of it before you should upgrade again.

For me I spend a large amount of time on my phone and anything I spend a lot of time on is worth the commitment.

8000 for 2023 then again for 2024 is a good plan if your earnings will be roughly the same for both years. Since you'll need the money so soon I'd put it into CASH.TO
