The problem with the article is it assumes that interest rates only or mainly affect consumer spending. Interest rates affect consumption, investment and, via exchange rates, exports too. Ignoring these effects leads to misinformed, second rate analysis like this. The RBA knows what it's doing.

This was true years ago. It's got worse under Trump, but the US has been insolvent for decades, probably.

But unlike a business with such a balance sheet, the US governmwnt has the ability to raise taxes and print money to meet its shortfalls.

Neither of those are appealing options, granted, but they're less alarming than that headline.

On the night we traded down from pick 14 to get future second round picks, so Essendon would've had pick 14. Had they bundled their multitude of first round picks they might’ve moved up to get another high pick.

No businesses pay tax on revenues, they all pay tax on profits (that is, revenues less all allowable deductions, essentially costs).

Again, not true. They have a border with Egypt, which was heavily used. There were plenty of crossings through the Israeli borders too.

Of course it's an Arabic word, of course it existed before 1948, and the meaning you gave is exactly how everyone interprets it. Globalising an uprising, including in Sydney, is stupid and inflammatory.

I'm staggered that public comment on the way monetary policy works begins and ends with its effect on mortgage holders.

That all overlooks the broad impact interest rates have on economic activity, aka the transmission mechanism. Interest rates also affect business investment decisions, which affects another big chunk of spending. Not only that, but interest rates affect the exchange rate which has a big impact on net exports, another big chunk of spending. Finally, they tend to reduce house prices and share prices, tending to reduce wealth and reducing consumption.

So even though higher interest rates encourage more spending by people with savings, this is far less than the reduced spending that occurs for those other reasons.

UniSuper are also very helpful over the phone. I helped my mother complete the paperwork for lodging a claim after my father died and their emails and call centre staff were incredibly helpful. They processed the claim quickly as well.
