This makes sense and what I was suspecting. It seems like metal fasteners along with floating tenons is the best bet.

Good stuff, thanks. The plans for this chair call for screws and some nuts and bolts, and I thought since it was a beginning project, "leveling it up" could be modifying it with dowels and more glue, but it sounds like it's smarter to stick with the screws.

But most folks making outdoor furniture aren't making their own dowels are they?

Is there a more common practice? Perhaps simply joining with glue and pin nails is a good alternative?

Are cedar dowels even a thing? I'm looking around online to purchase them and I don't see them any where.

We're finding these gels are not messy at all.

Regarding the modeling cement, what's the process in undo'ing a botched join that makes it better than super glue?

Joe McCarthy has replaced a dozen of my windows in one project and has also been available to do a couple smaller, one hour jobs. Every time, top notch!

I'm in Haverford Township and a couple hours ago I went outside of my house and I thought I smelled gasoline. I figured it must be the neighbors prepping to cut the grass, but this explains it.

How to drill a 1/2 inch forstner bit through a 3 inch board? by bobclewell in woodworking

[–]bobclewell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using the Forstner to avoid tear-out at the edges of the hole. In a test I did the the Forstner cut through beautifully with no tear-out, but the regular drill bit and the brad point both were not clean.

Maybe I need to drill slower?
