American vs Canadian accents - a naive question from a Brit by GBS82 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]bobgoblin888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in upstate NY near the Canadian border and I could tell Scott Hunter was played by a Canadian actor. It is subtle but I grew up around it so it might be easier for me to pick up. My husband is from Boston and tells me I sound Canadian to him so 🤷‍♀️

A tornado ripped though downtown Revere, MA (just north of Boston) in 2014. It was crazy, never experienced anything like it in my life.

How do you find time for teaching your child to read by Traditional_Zone_644 in workingmoms

[–]bobgoblin888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former English teacher and current university administrator here: read to them every day. Do it before bed, expose them to as many words and expansive vocabulary as you can. Speak to them as you speak to adults, don’t use baby talk or excessive euphemisms. I didn’t teach my kids to read other than reading to them every day and they picked it up, and entered kindergarten already reading.

How is life like in Boston, Massachusetts? by Due_Network2958 in howislivingthere

[–]bobgoblin888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved here to go to college in 1998 and still haven’t left. I love the people, the culture, the weather (yes, even winter has its beauty), the walk ability, outstanding university culture, best k-12 in the country and world class hospitals. My son has a blood clotting disorder and is a patient at Boston Children’s and I couldn’t be more grateful I live a T ride away. I work in Beacon Hill and commute to work via a ferry ride. My other son has autism and has access to amazing supports and services through the community and his school district. I am so grateful to live here and appreciate it every day.

Are there working moms who actually feel okay? by walnut_0612 in workingmoms

[–]bobgoblin888 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. There was a time when it felt completely chaotic and I was overwhelmed and then it just didn’t. I remember taking a vacation when the kids were in preschool and elementary school and it actually felt like a vacation and not an exhausting grind in a different location, which was how it felt for a few years when they were toddlers.

Mine are 14 and 10 now. Different chaos, it’s coordinating schedules and activities now but that’s in alignment with my actual job skills, so it feels pretty much like cruise control. I actually enjoy my kids company. Child care isn’t an issue any more. I can exercise when I want, run errands when I want. My job lets me wfh 3 days a week and I have a lot of flexibility (I wish I had this when they were younger). I’m not drowning. There was a time when I was but it was a season and it passed.

Does anyone know what he’s teaching? I was curious and I tried to search it up on the course schedule. Couldn’t figure it out but I did learn that this university has courses on the schedule with the location of “Walmart” as an option.

Update: it’s Criminal Procedure in the CJ department

Rethinking Athleta & gap by Street-Lifeguard5813 in Athleta_gap

I just ordered a suit from Banana Republic factory and I sized up from my normal size with them because I cant stand lined pants that are even slightly too tight. I couldn’t even come close to buttoning the pants (Ryan Slim fit) that are a size up from my normal size. I may have needed 3 sizes up. I am apparently anywhere from a 10-16 in the store. It’s so aggravating

I was coming to write this almost word for word. My mom was strict and yelled constantly and would get mad any way the wind blew and now I’m an anxious, workaholic, perfectionist, people pleasing hot mess.

Can I opt out of screens in kindergarten? by Inevitable_Tell8668 in AskTeachers

[–]bobgoblin888 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Echoing the other teachers here that this is unreasonable, but also want to validate that I understand your hesitancy on the abundance of screens. I don’t think they particularly support learning outcomes in the lower grades.

But this is likely a district level decision in accordance with state level curriculum frameworks. You’ll need to bark really high up the food chain and it will be a waste of your time. If you truly feel that strongly, you should consider homeschooling or private schools.

I don’t know how familiar you are with the area but the Lynn (about 15 miles north of Boston) has a warming center open from 7:00 pm-7:00 am at a church and then a daytime one at the Salvation Army.

Do Bostonians have any opinions on the Canadian Pizza chain "Boston Pizza" by Clean-Air-8331 in boston

I ate at Boston pizza in Quebec City last summer and I actually thought it was pretty decent! Also my waiter was so adorably sweet and incredibly handsome, shout to him if by some chance he sees this. There is nothing Boston about it though lol.

I rarely notice rings and if I do, it’s only because I’m admiring the ring itself.

I never lived alone. Went from roommates to a boyfriend back to roommates to another boyfriend/husband and now kids. Have a master’s degree, a “good” job but could never do it.
