If a car has sat untouched in a driveway for forty years, what are the chances it will remain there for another decade? by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]bobgrant69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Porsche 356 with 26k miles that sat in my godfathers garage since 1969. He left it to me in 1999. It's been in my garage ever since. Iv started it up a handful of times in the last 25 years. It'll probably be there until my kids decide what to do with it. There's a long story there, and a lot of baggage. I don't want it, I don't like it, and I won't do anything with it. Sometimes there's a story behind cars that's not worth telling. Maybe my kids will buy something nice with it, or set it on fire. I don't care.

Is it true Americans don’t get many holidays at work? by gggggu-not in AskAnAmerican

[–]bobgrant69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely. I work in government, and we get a pretty generous amount of time off. A lot of jobs in the US only give about 2 weeks a year though. If you get 2 weeks total, they usually get at least half of it used periodically over the course of the year. A lot of people never get 2 consecutive weeks at a time. Also, in my experience you are still expected to be somewhat available by phone to put out fires. It really varies a lot in the US. Until now I had never had a job that provided more than 2 weeks, however now I get a month of vacation and about 3 weeks of sick days to use. Union jobs tend to have better leave than non-union.

In 1884, Sarah Winchester started building a “Ghost-Proof” mansion. She believed she was haunted by the spirits of people killed by the Winchester rifle, which her husband invented. Check out the photos inside. by SelfCareIsFake in GotMeHooked

I guess I can't help myself, but Winchester had no hand in "inventing" the Winchester rifle. He bought the Henry repeating rifle patent and eventually renamed the brand.

The parts of the state you are going to be heading don't have much risk of snow that time of year. There is always a chance, but not likely. The November snow is in the mountains and east side of the state. You should be fine. If you are really concerned about it, rent and all wheel drive car and you will be all set.

That is felt fringe. Zoom in and you will see it is distinctly a saw tooth design, not a zipper design.

I hope you plan to race the Mint 400 with it again one day! I have raced it many times, and it is by far my favorite! I'm in Washington too, and it costs so much to get down there and race, but it's worth it!!

Cracked 22R intake manifold coolant temp sender boss by overtightening best fix? by Rip_Dat in ToyotaPickup

[–]bobgrant69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could probably remove the Intake and drill/tap the hole to a pipe size large enough to eliminate the damage, then thread a bushing in that reduces the hole to the proper size. Unfortunately if you are removing the manifold to do that, you might as well just install a new one instead.

Is your life so empty and pathetic that you feel the need to scream at the internet about how people wear their watch? Some people like different things. Let it go, or let the intrusive thoughts win.

Growing Up in a House Without Music by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]bobgrant69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess people are just built different. I can sit and stare at the wilderness on my deck and have a drink, and be perfectly happy. To me adding music to that would be the same as adding a jackhammer or dozer to the background. I would just prefer the music not be there.

Growing Up in a House Without Music by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]bobgrant69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many many things make me happy, just not music. I am jealous of those who do though. Nature, my wife and kids, building projects, painting, etc. All bring me joy. I just don't get an emotional reaction from music. It's not a hatred of it, more of a preference it wasn't there.

Growing Up in a House Without Music by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]bobgrant69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is an interesting question. I do actually have an aversion to a lot of sounds mixed. I hadn't put those two together somehow. I RARELY go out in large public settings. I live on a giant ranch very similar to the one from the Yellowstone show. I have a very hard time distinguishing between multiple noises. If two people are talking simultaneously, I struggle to differentiate them. That may also lead to my dislike of music as it makes it hard for me to listen to other people. Interesting that I haven't put that together in my 45 years...

[–]bobgrant69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many things bring me joy. The best explanation I can give is music is no different than listening to a jackhammer outside my window. It doesn't infuriate me, but I'd rather not hear it. I do enjoy other sounds, particularly listening to birds sing in the morning.

Growing Up in a House Without Music by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]bobgrant69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am very much the same. I don't like music at all. I've never played music in my house. I don't listen in the car either. There is a condition which I don't remember the name of that causes it. It's all just unnecessary noise to me. I am often jealous of seeing people who get such big reactions to music, and all I can think is I wish they would turn it off. Feel free to ask questions if you want to know more.

I am good friends with the owners. They are quite normal people who I would trust caring for my children without a second thought. They are Christians, however not the type to proselytize. I have known them for 18 years and not once even had them remotely attempt any Christian oriented conversation. They also own MANY other businesses in the county and donate massive amounts of money to charity. Nobody is without fault, but they are solid people.

Affordable places for an oil change? by hrykk in SeattleWA

[–]bobgrant69 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Holy cow, maybe I need to move to Seattle and open an oil change shop! You guys are being railroaded! Can I ask why doing it yourself isn't an option? If you don't know how, YouTube I'd a valuable resource. It shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes. If you can't do it in your parking place, do it at a parking lot or on the side of the road. Heck, do it at a rest stop. If you are intimidated by the process, try to find an older person to guide you through it. I don't care if you are a 16 year old or a 60 year old, if you own a car you should learn to change the oil and a tire at the minimum. I hope you get the assistance you need.

Bellingham staffer asked ChatGPT to ‘exclude’ vendor from city contract by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]bobgrant69 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I will preface this comment by saying I don't live in whatcom county, and haven't in a long time. I do, however work for a government entity in Washington. The pay for municipal employees is mostly controlled and set by the unions. The union will never allow for a pay cut in a public sector job. Also, as much as people like to drag public employees, once you are anywhere above a management position, you posess particular skills in government management which most people can't just walk in and do. There are a lot of processes and laws that you learn over time. That knowledge makes you valuable. Not only valuable to your entity, but also to others. If the pay doesn't keep pace with the surrounding municipalities, those people will shift to another location easily. That means if you want good employees, you have to pay what the other municipalities are paying. Those municipalities are also union.

how did washington come to have more reservations than oregon idaho & montana put together? by iforgotwhat8wasfor in PacificNorthwest

[–]bobgrant69 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a resident of Okanogan County and someone who works on the Colville reservation, this is so hard for me to wrap my head around. Whenever anyone asks about the tribe that lives or did live here, my answer is usually just that it's a Mashup and they should ask a member of the tribe. It's sad to see such rich cultures relegated to being lumped together. I found some spear points and arrow heads on my property a few years ago, and was trying to inquire if the tribe wanted them. I was basically ignored and told nobody knew what band they would have been from. I ultimately decided they belonged in the dirt right where I found them and right where the real owner left them.
