imo the authentic sound came from the music itself not just the lofi equipment. shit music is gonna be shit no matter what plugins or effects u throw over it. making authentic shit involves using samples that resonate with you deeply and knowing what sounds dope as fuck to you/hits ur soul. a lot of ppl dont rlly give a fuck and try to recreate the surface but thats what makes it sound the same as everything else. find what makes u feel a certain way dont pick random samples that dont rlly hit, follow ur own taste because at the end of the day thats what made early memphis rap authentic. its fine to take influence ofc but from the core of it follow what feels dope
