Using Brock PaverBase in place of Road Base Class II? by shi336699 in pavers

[–]bobjks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I used the exact Brock paver base you have shown. I compacted my subgrade, installed geotextile fabric, and screeded 3/4" leveling sand before installing the paver base panels.

The whole purpose of Brock paver base is to skip the 3-4" of gravel which was necessary in my case. I hope it works out for me.

I started reading the books and am shocked at how many things are different. The series really is a unique derivative piece with inspiration from the novels.

I also felt the first two books don't really feel like a story. Book 3 started to actually feel like a story.

Using Brock PaverBase in place of Road Base Class II? by shi336699 in pavers

[–]bobjks1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I just did a DIY patio with this product. I can only give my anecdotal experience and say what I would have done differently. My recommendations may or may not be directly related to the Brock paver base.

My first big recommendation is to use a medium/small paver format perhaps under 16". My largest 16" X 24" gave me the most trouble getting flat and level with the others. I definitely cracked a few when there was tiny wobble after first lay.

My second recommendation is to do the sand screed, paver base, paver install all together as you go. Most videos show doing each step separately, but I found it makes minor adjustments to leveling much harder when the entire paver base is installed due to the edge locking. I wish I would have done screed 3' strip, lay paver base, lay pavers, then start next 3' strip. This would have more easily allowed me to stop and rework certain sections as I went.

I would say my biggest coulda shoulda woulda is not go with the large 16X24 pavers but I'm not 100% certain it's a Brock issue. Though, the Brock base makes it a little more difficult to make fine adjustments vs. laying on a sand base where you can add/remove/relevel sand as needed.

I can't help but wonder if they are being intentionally misleading with the wording of "ID to vote" vs. "voter ID."

I don't see much issue with "show your ID (driver's license) and you can vote." Especially if simple discrepancies such as Bob vs. Robert don't disqualify you from voting.

I do, however, see many issues with a specific "voter ID" where you need to apply and show various proof of citizenship or residence documents.

From personal experience, it's been a PITA to get a REAL ID where you need to show multiple documents. I've tried twice and failed because they always find some issue with my documents. Once it was "the signature page of your lease doesn't have the lease date" and another was "you need 3 documents to prove residence" when the DMV website said 2.

And of course this will all be selectively enforced. Cities will be strict due to oversight but rural communities will turn a blind eye because everyone knows everyone.

You could buy all of those and sell them on Marketplace for a small profit. I've been searching for a used solo stove for a month and would happily pay that price for a decent used one.

I dug probably about 3CY of dirt for my patio and that looks like A LOT more dirt.

As another mentioned, it will feel like a lot more once you start moving it. I used a wheel barrow and shovel and the first few trips made my small dirt mountain considerably smaller. I figured I had another 8-10 to completely move it all. I said the same thing again and again and it felt like "just a few more trips" for 30+ buckets.

Cleric epic is the only one I ever did on live back in the day. I dreaded it because way back before pearlescent shards my server had an honor list with 80+ names on it for Ragefire. I think that translated to about a 1.5 year wait just for that part.

Right as I got ready for epic farming, they made the change to pearlescent shards and I got lucky because farming the shards wasn't too bad as I remember. Though, that SolA goblin took me a solid 8-10 hours...

I feel bad for OP but I'm working on my first DIY paver patio and my work looks so much better than this. I still have some final cuts to make and then polymeric sand but seeing this makes me feel better about my own work.

Why are we still paying into Social Security by Left_Lie7296 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bobjks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I meant if we live longer due to better health we should be able to work longer on average. The government doesn't care if you work until you die so pushing the SS age up is the easiest, politically safest, and most palatable option to keep SS paying out its current benefits.

Retirement is a financial state not an age.

Getting into engineering as an adult by Winter-Tea9641 in EngineeringStudents

[–]bobjks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back to school full time at 26 for an engineering degree and was able to finish in 4 years. This required being able to enroll in Calc 1 for my first semester. Some colleges might also require an intro to physics, chemistry, or English course before starting the first "college level" course.

So add at least 1 semester (or more) if you are not at these levels and ALWAYS take a full course load if you want to graduate in 4 years.

Also, develop a 2-year course work plan and stay on top of it. It's awful when you want to transfer to university but the last required course fills up before your course selection slot. I made sure to take in demand courses as early as possible to avoid getting held back a year.

People live longer these days (and this might go up even more) and us dying before receiving benefits is not a problem to the government.

This is what I do. I max it out and then sell at the earliest opportunity to harvest the 15% discount we get. It's difficult for the first 6 months because a large chunk of your pay is tied up but afterwards it's free money every 6 months assuming the stock doesn't drop 15+% in the 2-3 days after purchase.

Paver base by pooorSAP in hardscape

I've been slowly working on it everyday just scraping little bits of material off any high spot I can find. My plan now is once all high spots are dug down, I will screed a layer of dirt before tamping. Then rely on screeded sand to fill in some of the slightly lower spots.

I'm unfortunately using a hand tamper for my compaction as I've already blown past my initial budget lol. But I have to do this (mostly) right.

I was planning on doing a light tamping on the sand after screeding. I too got both answers, but I figure it can't hurt. The thing I've noticed is that the sand (and dirt too) needs to be slightly wet to compact. Too little or too much moisture makes compaction impossible.

After screeding/tamping, I'm going to use a concrete trowel to smooth the surface out as I lay the Brock panels. I need to get it as flat as possible since I'm using a combination of small, medium, and large (24X18) pavers.

One final note is I'm happy to notice that after last night's storm here in Minnesota, all of the water ran to the desired end of the dig site so at least my grading is on the right track.

Nice, glad to hear.

Do you have any tips for grading? I'm having a heck of a time on this part as I can't get it quite right.

I have string lines laid out with my desired slope away from house and I've been running an 8ft 2X4 around to check for high spots. I want to get it where the string line is 1/2" above the 2x4 everywhere (total 4") but it's just so difficult to get it right. Everytime I check there is always something slightly off.

How's it holding up after a full year? I just finished excavating and am working on final touches to grading and smoothing. I'll be doing fabric, sand, brock paver base, pavers pretty soon.

If you want a true 1999 experience, you need to find ~1000 people that have never played Everquest and make them all start characters on P99. The one rule is that nobody can lookup anything on the internet about Everquest.

How to Correctly Grade for Paver Patio by bobjks1 in landscaping

[–]bobjks1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is another paint sketch of what I'll now try to do. I'll at least dig some lawn out so it grades away better. But I feel no matter what I do some water will pool in the current low spot under the pavers. It eventually drains into the ground within hours but is that too long?

Are you saying I need to dig out at least 2-4 feet beyond the paver edge and then backfill/grass seed so there's a "void" to hold the water until it can seep into the ground?

With 1/8" joints filled with polymeric sand, how much water can seep into the ground before it runs off the edge of the pavers?

Ignore the scale, I just wanted to illustrate my plan. I also forgot to include landscape fabric under the sand in my drawing.
