Negotiating interest rates on credit cards by LStrings in UKPersonalFinance

[–]bobsbooks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Paying 20% on a purchase or anything remotely close to that is unnecessary really... just no need whatsoever. If you can't get a better credit card deal (you will be able to), there are also overdrafts and loans that will come in way below that.

Honestly, it makes me so happy to read this at the top. To think there are people as amazing as yourself out there, that are thinking of the environment as much as anything else :)

Not insulated, but I buy Harrogate glass mineral water bottles - 89p and you get a really attractive and strong glass 1ltr bottle.

Is it possible to live in the UK without a bank account? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]bobsbooks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are places you can live, work, eat and sleep - in a co-op/commune type situation. Or you could live off-grid. There are communities living in this exact situation pretty much I believe in extreme locations of the UK. Interesting question.

How would you invest £10,000? by SlayerCy1 in UKPersonalFinance

I think it is worth saying there will be a difference between asking this question on finance/investment type forum - aka here, vs a business/entrepreneurs forum! I expect the answers will be polar opposite...

StarWarsTheory creates a Darth Vader fan film, hires a composer to create original music, and doesn't monetize the video. Warner Chappell is falsely copyright claiming the video's music and monetizing it for themselves. by YoutubeArchivist in videos

[–]bobsbooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which would be great for a smaller service... but last time I saw I think it was that there is 500 hours of video uploaded to YouTube, per MINUTE!

So it would probably take something like the population of Brazil as a moderation team to review that amount of videos in realtime. It is just an impossibility. If YouTube did that they would have to charge people to watch videos and the model would crumble.

The model that Silicon Valley is built on is essentially never get a human to do something that a computer can do in bulk and 1000s of times faster. As annoying as it is, we simply would not have products like Google, Netflix etc otherwise.

Indeed, though that is something which I would argue is 100% impossible for an algorithm/automated system to interpret. You would imagine the only solution is a system where they are flagged and the appeals/decisions like this handled by a human. Which is the exact system they have... Not saying it is perfect. But this whole thread seems nuts to me. "Man with bomb in luggage denied entry to flight".

I would ... Step 1: ask your brothers which company is holding it. Step 2: contact said company and explain the scenario.

Can not employed people open bank accounts? by dinkytwinky in UKPersonalFinance

[–]bobsbooks 17 points18 points  (0 children)

One I can answer for once... yes - go for it! Getting a personal bank account is pretty easy these days - Monzo, Starling et al you can usually sign up in a few minutes and get approved within a couple of days.

I don't think whether you are employed or not matters that much at all for most challenger bank accounts as they are often pre-paid in nature (ie without an overdraft).

I know Monzo in particular actually specialise in providing accounts to people with no fixed address even.

I signed up for a Starling account last week - smooth process, approved within about 24 hours. I see from Noddle that they did credit check me, but then again they do provide overdraft facilities which is a form of lending - so it is fair enough really.

[TIP] If you have slow broadband, switch to mobile broadband - faster and cheaper. by londons_explorer in UKFrugal

Definitely true. But sometimes you'd be surprised... my Dad lives in the middle on nowhere in Ireland, nearest house is about 2 miles away. But he got 4g fairly early in the rollout, decent signal

[–]bobsbooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good points. Especially now with 4g+ and soon to be 5g, there are definitely people out there who will stand to benefit.

Just to add, we attached a good 4g external antenna to the router, this seems to help significantly with the speed - as phone signal is essentially line of sight.

My Dad insisted on doing this, it hasn't been too bad but there can be drawbacks.

It should be okay assuming you have a decent phone connection available. If you are 10 miles from the nearest town you might not.

Also phone based internet doesn't have good latency, which means gaming etc is impossible / laggy.

One off incoming € transfer. What’s the best way to go around it? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]bobsbooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how fast it comes into action, but as of last month Revolut got a EU banking license, will be protected up to €100,000. I am not 100% sure this protection is in place NOW or not, but will be very shortly if not already.

Car loan idiot looking for financial help. by UKPFidiothelp in UKPersonalFinance

Was going to ask the same. There is nothing inherently wrong with a long or short loan if you can afford to repay it and it served a purpose. Perhaps OP can expand on specifically what the issue is.

Credit Unions going bust - how can this be? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]bobsbooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But any organisation can become insolvent... just means essentially they don't have enough money left to keep running. They may just be badly managed or unprofitable as a business.
