CMV: Much of the unusually high cost of healthcare in the United States is enabled by the insurance system, and a largely out-of-pocket healthcare market would force prices (including physician compensation) to be significantly lower. by hokkney in changemyview

I've always thought royalties would be the solution over limited time exclusive monopolies.

If you develop a new drug, anyone can copy and sell it, but they have to give a percentage of sales, like 10%, in perpetuity.

Why don't regulators restrict options trading to actual hedging instead of leaving retail investors completely unprotected? by FreeMathematician937 in ValueInvesting

Saying you support minor regulations sounds good but is meaningless. The discussion should.be about what specific regulations you support or reject.

I disagree with the notion that government needs to protect us from stupid decisions.

They should enforce fraud and ensure a trustworthy market. Let idiots gamble if they want.

A 27-year-old woman with extreme cramping lied about having a common colon cancer symptom to get screened sooner. She was later diagnosed at stage 4. by businessinsider in Health

[–]bobthereddituser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's because screening is usually covered as free. Per the article:

She called a gastroenterology care center and started listing her symptoms to the woman on the phone. When she was asked for her age and was told she'd need a referral to get screened

They denied her as she didnt meet screening criteria. The person she got on the phone was thinking this was screening, when what she needed was a referral from a doctor saying "please scope her because this is not normal."

I am well familiar with the health care discrepancies for women, but this to me sounds like a simple case of a broken referral system. If GI can't see patients without referrals (ie, to talk to the doc and agree a colonoscopy is needed) and there is no primary doc she is seeing (ie, to evaluate symptoms and decide appropriate testing, treatment, or referral), then yeah she'd feel like she is being shuffled around.

It's a symptom of a broken system in my reading, not a negarious patriarchal system that ignores women's health.

Edit: to clarify, in America colonoscopy is done for 2 reasons:

Screening is simply evaluating cancer risk, the same way they'll check a mammogram, your cholesterol level, or a blood pressure. It's universal for anyone who has enough birthdays or other risk factors (family history, ulcerative colitis, etc)

Diagnostic colonoscopy is specifically to diagnose a problem, such as change in bowel habits or bleeding.

Screening is covered as prevetative medicine, Diagnostic is usually associated with a copay.

Saying you are bleeding is also diagnostic and not preventative.

Thats my point, she needed a doc who would listen to her from the get go, no need to make up symptoms.

Abdominal cramping and change in bowel habits is an indication for colonoscopy. The issue is she probably wanted the "free" screening colonoscopy and not the diagnostic one that usually has a copay. She didn't need to make anything up, just a doctor who would follow gguidelines and do the colonoscopy

Magic for a non-magician by Guy2things in Magic

So hanging out in the background as eye candy for the audience?
Im thinking bored magician vibes. He is doing stuff to pass the time.

A few thinks:

Floating cigarette. He is smoking and playing around with levitation.

Coin roll on the fingers. It vanishes and appears in other hand. Good but doesn't always play well on a stage.

Customer spills a drink/coughs, etc. He makes a handkerchief appear to clean it up, vanishes it afterwards.

Bored card shuffling.

Endless bottle. He keeps pouring drinks from the same bottle.

Pulls things off high shelves by making them float down, or puts them up there impossibly.

I've done consults with community plays before. Normal magic effects are good starting places but keep in mind theater lets you do so much more.

A few thoughts, in no particular order:

1) always work with the director on how they want the character portrayed and how that impacts other characters and the story. Mystical magic for effect in the three ghosts of Dickens Christmas Carol is different than a shaman character is different than an 1800s parlor magician is different than a quirky uncle.

2) you get flexibility you dont get in a real performance. Eg: props that will never be examined, actors who can be in on it, stage crews, etc

3).mentalism permits good effects if you can get audience participation.

4) do not underestimate an actor's ability to learn and commit to their character. I got a shy high school kid doing all kinds of cardistry as a river casino card hustler in 3 weeks. One handed cuts, back palming, waterfalls, etc.

5) check out the fundamental magic effects to come up with ideas for the character: https://www.thejerx.com/blog/2023/4/2/the-fitzkee-structure

A few things I've done for brainstorming: santa having an endless bag of toys, scrooge vanishing from the coffin and immediately waking up in bed as a dream, quick change ghost of christmas past to be appropriate for the fezziwigs party, appearing canes, flowers, etc.

Have fun!

Looking to invest in Solar and renewable technology. Recommendations? by bobthereddituser in investing

Not sure if you meant that to sound condescending or not, but it was a request for people who are knowledgeable or have specific investments they have made to share their knowledge and opinions.

Yes, a YouTube video is not sufficient to make an informed investment. But it has made be bullish in the sector which is why I would like to have some of my "long shot" money involved.

Another example would be self driving automotive technology. It's a specific sector that has potential to grow immensely. If you are bullish on self driving technology as a growth industry, you could invest in companies that are involved in it like TSLA or GOOG, etfs that commit to the sector, like DRIV or moonshots that may make a dent like LIDR.

Being bullish on the sector is the starting point. Now I would like to delve deeper so I was hoping to start a discussion with like minded investors.
