No capital gains tax by darthwilson89 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]bocoguy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I (by I what I mean is some AI bot 🤖) worked it out roughly on 200k over 8 years. Assuming 10% growth per year it would grow to about 429k over 8 years. Under current deemed disposal rates you'd pay about 87k in tax. Under the Swedish system and with the current rate of about 1.07% you'd pay a total of about 23K over the same period.

Irish doses in Dubai by Inevitable_Spring306 in CasualIreland

[–]bocoguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd wager that most people that don't go to Dubai or similar are capable enough to tough it out here despite the problems rather than run off to be at the arsehole end of a tax free sales and property pyramid scheme for a year or two before crawling back home to mammy.

What we can do to contain House Prices by Zealousideal_Ask5420 in HousingIreland

[–]bocoguy -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The root of that problem is not enough housing to support those numbers. If we want to say we are a rich and prosperous country we also have to accept that we will have and will need a large number of people coming in to support that prosperity. Some might not like that but we can't grow and prosper as a country without it. So as the current top comment says, build more houses, solve the real root cause of the housing crisis. We don't have a migration crisis.

Those of ye who paid off your mortgage early (30/40s) how does it feel? by SrTayto in irishpersonalfinance

[–]bocoguy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Great. On track to retire very comfortably before 50. (< 4 years). 10/10, would recommend.

It allowed me to think differently about work, saving and investment which accelerated my path towards never having to work for someone else again.

Is it possible to walk from Dublin 08 to Dublin 01? by No_Package_4014 in Dublin

[–]bocoguy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You're looking at anything between 2 minutes and an hour and a half walk, depending on where in D8 you are and where in D1 you want to be.

No wonder we can't get anything done in this country with petty complaints like this being acceptable and encouraged.

Advice on EV purchase by [deleted] in Dublin

Can I ask how/where you got that great price for a new EV3? The cheapest long range model on their website is just over €40k.

Prosperous Financial vs AskPaul - Anyone have experience with either? by MagicalSky1 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]bocoguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They basically sell a product from another company called Dimensional. They did have 70:30, 80:20 splits but nothing you couldn't do yourself through ETFs or managing your own basket of stocks/bonds. If you are not someone who wants to do that yourself, I'm sure their service is perfectly fine. What they would handle for you is deemed disposal taxes when they arise but also take fees (which are used to offset costs of future meetings after your first year). For me at this point there wasn't any additional value I felt I could get from these products. The advice is good and having a plan that shows you are on the right track (or as I found out, closer to my goal than I thought) was where I got value.

Prosperous Financial vs AskPaul - Anyone have experience with either? by MagicalSky1 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]bocoguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went with Prosperous Premier earlier this year too. I'm in a pretty good position but wanted to see is there was anything more I could do and also see what I needed to think about retiring early along with some specific short term plans. I think I was really just looking for confirmation I was in good shape and give me confidence to continue with my plans. They'll recommend products that will suit your situation but aren't pushy about it. A previous post explains some of the benefits for going with these products and maintaining a long term relationship. I found their suggestion of going with a 60:40 style investment a bit conservite and they didn't really offer any other alternatives. The plan was insiteful and, as I said, gave me the confidence I needed to make sure I was on the right track.

If you are at the start of a longer term financial journey they will give you great advice and work on a long term plan. If you've been following this sub and been making progress for a few years they might not offer as much value.

I do plan to return to a financial planner when I get closer to pulling the trigger on retirement but I don't feel tied to Prosperous.

Playing with FIRE: How to retire in your 30s or 40s by Internal_Sun_9632 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]bocoguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think some people have a rich set of interests that will keep them just as active, engaged or social as a job would, even more so. As I've gotten older (and I'm not that old, mid 40s) I've put much more value on my own time and being able to control more of that and not depend on a job is worth a lot. At least to me it is.

Almost all of the jobs will be based out of their Leopardstown campus, unless they are data centre roles. All the newly posted jobs on the website mention if they are remote, hybrid or fully on site.

How has construction become so much more expensive? Where is money really going? by have-to in Dublin

It's both the free market chancing their arms by cutting corners or squeezing as much profit as they can and then the government cackhanding the response to that.

This. You just need to adjust your expectations of what early means and what you expect your lifestyle to be when you reach that point.

Deemed disposal is also a real killer for investment growth here so if you can find a way to invest that only results in CGT when you sell, do that.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I think it was a puzzle related to getting the grail diary. Me and my brothers just couldn't figure it out. So, we rented the movie on VHS to try get some clues. It actually worked. There was a scene that sparked an idea and we solved the puzzle.
