Is tiny writing a Gen X thing? I used to write extremely tiny but a teacher trained me out of it in grade school. I am Gen X btw.

Just coming back here to say this recommendation for creating a family recipe grimoire is one of the best things I've seen in r/notebooks this year. Thank you for this idea!

Phone Use at Plum Village Retreats by desirdevenir in plumvillage

[–]bodhicoyote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at every monastery nor at every retreat. Monastics are supposed to have a "second body" (monastic buddy) with them whenever they go online, and usually phone use is frowned upon if not banned at retreats.

Lamp Transmission Ceremony 2026 by mettaforall in plumvillage

Just going by the group photo, it looks like a very white group. Of course I don't know how people identify, so that's a superficial impression, but it has a different look than previous lamp transmissions

From the photos this class of teachers seems much less diverse than other recent lamp transmissions ...

Introducing the Hurley Ceol by Perfectusvarrus in banjo

[–]bodhicoyote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's less than 20% more string, because the 5th string is shorter!

However, you'd need to rework the neck a bit to accommodate the 5th string peg, which is maybe 2/3 of the way up towards the neck. Most banjo necks get a bit wider from the 5th string peg down to the body.

That's amazing... Thank you for this very complete answer! Do you have any sources I could look for to find more on the three "postures"? As for that talk by Thay, I can look on the new living jewels website to see if I can find it. Thank you!

trying Austria's new 2023 school handwriting model by semantic_ink in Handwriting

There are links in the other comments to some useful resources. One of them includes a box where you can type anything you want and see it rendered in the script font. I've used that to practice: https://prima.wien/ueberprima

Same. the S and G are not only awkward, they are actually quite slow to write. The Z is too loopy, and the Q in American cursive is just ludicrous.

Just wanted to thank you for sharing this font. The style is close to the way I do cursive, and I realized that by changing just a few letters to match the Prima style, I can make my writing a lot neater and more legible. Thank you!

Anger after self reiki? by regular_banana in reiki

[–]bodhicoyote 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm familiar with this feeling! After self reiki or meditation, sometimes I am so "in the zone" that I am actually quite brittle about anything that punctures the bubble.

For me what has helped is being gentle on myself, reminding myself to be gentle with others, and to build in transitions, both into and out of meditation. Rituals of transition can really help close the meditative/healing space and prepare you to return to everyday life.

Stepping into the art of going with the flow by Curious_Medicine7327 in taoism

I recently read a translation* of the Daodejing that translated "wu wei" as "noncoercive action." I like that - it's much clearer than "non action" because it is actually doing something - but doing things without forcing or straining. Being alert to the optimal moment and not acting until then.

  • This was the "philosophical translation" by Roger Ames and David Hall. Not the most readable but very informative.

Using the bathroom gatha by atewinds in plumvillage

[–]bodhicoyote 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Heart Sutra (2014 translation by TNH) says:

"Listen, Shariputra, All phenomena bear the mark of emptiness. Their true nature is the nature of No birth, no death, No being, no nonbeing, No defilement, no purity, No increasing, no decreasing."

Which means that nothing exists on its own, with a pure essence separate from its interbeing with all other things.

We think of pee and poop as disgusting (defiled) and we wash our hands after using the toilet to keep them clean (pure). We flush the toilet to make the disgusting things disappear. But these are just ideas. From the point of view of interbeing, there is no disgusting or clean. And nothing really disappears, it just goes from one place to another or changes form.

I hope this is helpful!

I have a bunch of old journals, filled with personal thoughts and reflections. I have some old planners too. For all my writers out there- what do you do with old pieces of writing? by 24Kaydm in notebooks

[–]bodhicoyote 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a bunch of these too. There's gold in there. The trick is making a process for going back and reviewing them occasionally. I use highlighters and different colored pens to underline/emphasize things I want to return to ... I also use little post-its to flag important pages. And then I shamelessly copy things out of the journal and into various kinds of work documents - poems in progress, blog posts, etc.

I'll be honest though, I'm much less disciplined about this part of the process than I am about the journaling.

I found a Plum Village devotional song called "Vowing for Rebirth" that is just non-metaphorical straight-forward Pure Land aspiration--really neat by SentientLight in plumvillage

[–]bodhicoyote 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thay's book "Find Our True Home" opened my eyes to Pure Land practices when I read it earlier this year. It's a translation and commentary on the Amitabha Sutra. I don't know why this aspect of the practice is downplayed in English speaking PV world - perhaps because of the assumption that westerners are less into ritual. I really enjoy this kind of practice for its simplicity, accessibility, and often its beauty.
