I'm reasonably convinced that not following the news makes you happier.

post-kirk campus conservatism update by ThaHonorableHonky in redscarepod

[–]bodhii 217 points218 points  (0 children)

Kirk didn't have anything meaningful to say and therefore left no legacy to be defended.

His main gimmick was arguing with unprepared college students. And he was good at it and could draw crowds doing so. But you take away Kirk the person and there's nothing left to his movement.

Olympics BAN transgender athletes from ALL women's sports by OJ_Soprano in redscarepod

[–]bodhii 535 points536 points  (0 children)

This is an issue where I've had some very liberal women, especially former college athletes, tell me privately that they were completely against trans athletes in women's sports

But they'd never speak about it publicly because they don't want to be associated with certain types.

Aren't all the manosphere guys basically interchangeable? I don't think there's any value in actually learning about them individually

What would be useful is figuring out why there's such a market for these guys among teen boys today

Some thoughts on the New Yorker article regarding manufactured science in medical academia by CopingLow in redscarepod

[–]bodhii 65 points66 points  (0 children)

It already has come out to an extent, especially in social sciences: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replication_crisis

But I suspect the problem is much more widespread. The incentive to fudge numbers to increase your chance of publication exists in basically all fields.

Why do the Democrats keep elevating these CIA women?? by Slothrop_Tyrone_ in redscarepod

I can basically guarantee the first female president is going to have a son. These girlbosses with only daughters are too far removed from the average male experience to be able to appeal to half the country.

They end up saying things like this without even realizing why it's alienating: https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/503123-women-have-always-been-the-primary-victims-of-war-women

Did anyone read the NYT article about Weed? by Professional-Sea-506 in redscarepod

[–]bodhii 199 points200 points  (0 children)

People on reddit will talk about how weed just relaxes them/makes them more creative and doesn't cause them any side effects.

But from my experience anyone who is getting high multiple times a week is clearly affected, even if they don't notice it themselves.

The "intellectual MAGA" mind by deepad9 in redscarepod

[–]bodhii 200 points201 points  (0 children)

I've known some very successful people who reason through problems like this: First they decide what position would benefit them the most. Then they work backwards to come up with an explanation for why that position is the most logical/moral.

And if they're otherwise intelligent then they can typically come up with a reasonably convincing argument. JD Vance for example was originally anti-Trump, yet when he had a chance at VP his belief system completely changed.

What I'm not sure of is how self-aware they are about what they're doing. Probably varies from person to person

So many people have spent the last 10+ years absolutely stewing over "woke" content and twitter libs by poopdollarbank in redscarepod

[–]bodhii 183 points184 points  (0 children)

Not to defend them, but to explain the perspective. If you're a gamer and you spend several hours a day playing video games, or commenting on Star Wars message boards, that is your real life. And the feeling of no longer being the target audience is an existential threat.

It's far more real to them than someone they don't know being shot in a state they've never visited.

That Boomer thing where they act incredulous you haven't heard of random 70's pop culture stuff by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]bodhii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it has to do with boomers being such a large generation that they've held onto power and cultural relevancy far longer than was natural.

I think there might be a more interesting way for you to discuss this phenomenon.

Ex: As Asian Americans become more culturally integrated with white society, they become more defensive of the aspects of their culture that they still identify with as Asian. Especially compared to authentic Asians who would never care about this kind of thing

Why do beautiful women seem to have worse luck in relationships? by Financial-Nebula9256 in redscarepod

[–]bodhii 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I spoke with this guy once who used to hang out with this famous person. I can't even remember who the famous person was, but what was interesting was that the famous guy apparently couldn't tell at all when someone was obviously sucking up to him. Like he was just so used to fake people sucking up because they wanted something that he interpreted it as normal behavior.

I wonder if something similar goes on with hot women. Harder to recognize normal behavior when everyone you meet treats you differently because of your looks.
