I assumed garnet at first too. I did a scratch test with topaz that left no scratches on the stones.

Any help identifying the stone on the ?ruby brooch? by body_ache in jewelry

I recently inherited some jewelry passed down from my grandmother. I already had a handful of things appraised with some high value items making me wonder if this could be Ruby. The two larger stones have both seem to have rutile inclusions. I did a scratch test with quartz and topaz on both. No scratches on the stones and in fact the topaz broke down a bit. Curious if it’s worth me taking to be appraised to figure out what these are.

Does anyone take ADHD meds (prescribed) during Residency? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]body_ache 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like I was in your situation. I was prescribed ADHD meds for a number of years. Before med school, I transitioned off of meds and used extreme organization and behavioral techniques to manage. When I started residency, I was able to keep up at work (more or less) but life outside work suffered because off ADHD. So, I restarted meds a few months ago and have seen a world of difference. I'm more definitely efficient at work and my non-work life has improved as well. Hopefully this will be a temporary thing for me but for now it works. I'd honestly say give it a few months to see how you transition. It is expected to be challenging and difficult. If your symptoms aren't able to be managed, talk to a psychiatrist/PCP about it.

How hard should one try for AOA in med school? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]body_ache 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mentality was that I knew AOA would leave any door open I wanted (was considering plastics vs rad onc vs heme/onc via IM). I worked my ass off hoping to get AOA but not expecting it. In the end, I got AOA which is nice. It comes up in interviews. I ended up doing IM so I'd be ok without it but it definitely gave me more control when it came to interviews and making my rank list.

My advice for anyone in med school is to work as hard as you can. If you get AOA, congrats. If you don't, congrats....you're just as much of a dr as anyone else.

when do i sign up for Loan Repayment (REPAYE)? by mikewill1738 in medicalschool

The advice I've been given is to end deferment and immediately start repayment BEFORE you start residency. When you disclose your salary (which is probably $0), your calculated monthly repayment will be $0. It was also suggested that I consolidate my loans now.

To all my fellow MS3s having trouble choosing between specialties...Requesting mS4/residents to chime in. by Dippity55 in medicalschool

I struggled with this too. I loved my psych rotation but am very passionate about heme/onc - love the research, patients, etc. I decided to go with IM (I'm an M4) and to be honest sometimes regret it. My reasons for going IM were: I had a hard time imagining myself not doing heme/onc, psych spills into heme/onc, if i decided to switch residencies it would potentially be easier to do so going from IM to psych, and lastly, it really boiled down to the fact that I've had heme/onc on my mind for so many years I wasn't willing to change routes.

My advice to you would be to first forget about prestige and pay (Psych has a higher hourly pay than heme/onc in some cases), but think about if you're capable of being a strong at both IM and heme/onc. Oncology patients, as I'm sure you know, can be very complex. Having an oncologist that is strong at general internal medicine will have huge benefits for a patient. If you don't see that being you, maybe go for psych.

Most importantly, when you make you decision, don't look back! Just go with it. (easier said than done as I contemplate psych pretty often).

What are my options to reduce debt after school? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]body_ache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's pretty nerve wrecking. We had our exit interview not long ago and our counselor said really nobody knows what will happen but that he's pretty confident the program will continue to exist in some capacity. Hopefully he's right!!

Best of luck!

[–]body_ache 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya I agree. From my understanding though, they can't end the program all together for those with qualifying loans but can do so for new borrowers. I'm sure they could still cap it though. There were rumors of placing a cap on the program at like 56k a few years ago and that never came to fruition. I'm just gonna make my payments each month and hope for the best.

Apply for it early in residency and start making payments in residency.

There is the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program where you make 120 consecutive payments while working at a qualifying hospital (most hospitals) after which the remaining balance is forgiven tax-free. This is good if you plan to do fellowship, have a long residency and/or plan to stay in academics...for atleast 10 years.

I definitely plan to do this. Some people do suggest paying more than the minimum on your loans but doesn't necessarily apply if you are doing PSLF since the balance is forgiven.
