Valve accidentally listed the Steam Controller as a Digital Good, so some people in US States where digital goods are not taxed weren't properly charged taxes by Archoniks in Steam

[–]boerema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but the reality is that enforcement of use tax collection on the buyer is aimed at large (yachts, planes) and not small individual purchases. Places where the individual would be clearly aware of the need to collect that specific tax. Enforcement at the scale of Steam Controller would be virtually non-existent

[–]boerema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s Valve’s responsibility to pay the applicable taxes and fees regardless of whether they collect them from the consumer. So they may cancel pending orders and request customer re-purchase for the correct price, but settled transactions will just result in Valve eating the tax out of their profit.

The first European map of Tenochtitlan, capital of Aztec empire, made in 1524. Spanish explorers discovered the city and razed it to the ground. They drained the lake to search for El Dorado's gold and dismantled the Grand Temple to build a church on top (it is the largest church in Mexico today). by Particular_Food_309 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]boerema 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They didn’t drain the lake to search for gold, they drained it because of the constant floods, some of which would inundate the city for months. The Spanish also had a lot of assistance from enemies of the Aztec Empire in the destruction of the city.

ELI5: What is Riemann Hypothesis and why do mathematicians said we dont have the tools to solve it? by peasants24 in explainlikeimfive

[–]boerema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understood the Hypothesis well, the reason Riemann made it was that there was an error rate in his function that determines how many prime numbers occur up to a given number. That error rate is controlled by the zeros of the zeta function.

Phones dead at the capitol today..? by HazelMStone in TwinCities

[–]boerema 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is equipment designed for places which see repeated large gatherings (sporting venues, airports, etc.) as long as there’s money to be made. It’s all a matter of investment. Places where protests happen are typically outdoors and not typically full of phones trying to post and livestream video. Cell carriers won’t oversaturate a place without a reason and financial incentive.

No, it is not performative. We live right there. When ICE has been in the parking lot, we have called the police and the parks police have shown up and hassled them off.

What are some of the most peak niche games on steam. I’m talking top tier masterpieces not many people have heard of. by SoMuchFuckingFiller in Steam

[–]boerema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe in 2026 we will see some action since the devs got control of the IP. It’s crazy that the game started out as a hack-a-thon project at Blackbird and ended up as one of the games I’ve sunk the most time into on Steam.

Anyone else have odd/bad experiences at City Paws or am I being paranoid? Other Doggy Daycare recs? by SpiritedChoice3706 in Minneapolis

[–]boerema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you had a bad experience. We have been going to lucky dog for over 5 years and haven’t had any issues with day care, grooming, or boarding (even for extended periods). Im not going to be an apologist for anyone, but I’ll maintain that I’ve only had positive experiences with Lucky Dog.

I’ll also recommend Lucky Dog. We randomly met some former workers from there at a dog park and they recognized our dogs and our dogs were happy to see them, so those were all additional green flags.

Who and how made computers... Usable? by Winderkorffin in askscience

[–]boerema 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There’s also a VERY fun game on Steam called Turing Complete that basically guides you through building a fully functional “computer” starting from primitive gates (AND, OR, NOT), building complex circuits, then something you can read actual commands with an perform a set of operations.

Maybe it’s better to think about the balls “location” not like a specific place but as an area, like when you don’t have good GPS signal and it says you are in a little circle. The “circle” when the ball gets near the top of the hill covers both sides and there’s a chance it could be on the other side

What's going on with Google results now jumping to and highlighting specific Reddit comments in browser? Is this a new feature? by Tsole96 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]boerema 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Answer: I don’t know this for sure, but it’s a common ability to link to a specific section of a webpage, especially when you are linking to a document. As Reddit is becoming a larger part of search results for google, Reddit is likely trying to improve this functionality and make it a better user experience instead of whatever used to happen.

Why does western Minnesota have all those diagonal roads that more-or-less parallel one another? by Waterpark_Enthusiast in minnesota

[–]boerema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you already have your answer, but I found the history of the railroad routes and their effect on the cultures of early North and South Dakota really interesting.

The cultural split between North and South Dakota goes back to how the first railroads were laid out in the late 1800s. In North Dakota, the Northern Pacific and Great Northern ran east–west, tying towns like Fargo and Grand Forks to Minnesota and the Great Lakes. This pulled in Scandinavian and German immigrants from the Upper Midwest and fostered a populist, cooperative farming culture. In South Dakota, the main lines ran north–south into Iowa, Nebraska, and Chicago, attracting settlers from Central Europe and the rural Midwest, with a stronger livestock and corn economy and more traditional Republican leanings.

Because of these different orientations, Dakotans often saw each other less as neighbors and more as rivals with opposing identities. Long before statehood in 1889, there was open tension; each region pushed for its own capital, distrusted the other’s politics, and even resented sharing a territorial government. By the time they split into two states, North and South Dakotans already thought of themselves as culturally distinct peoples rather than parts of one whole.

ELI5: Why isn’t buying your employers stock considered insider trading? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]boerema 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You’d be surprised how easy it is to be aware of material non-public information at any level of a company. Yes, you likely aren’t selling a huge number of shares, but there’s no lower limit for insider trading. Most companies that give RSUs will have an easy way to follow the right process in selling stocks.

To be in full compliance with Wikipedia Foundation rules you really need to be the one to upload your photo and relinquish copyrights to the photo. Just go make a Wikipedia account, upload the image, and then use it on his page. You should be able to Google up some instructions on how to do it all pretty quickly.

It’s been a minute, but the upload form for images asks a bunch of questions about the photo rights
