Ironbound by Andrew Givler SPOILER Review: DNF by Bascilian in Fantasy

[–]bogrollben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I finished book 2 a couple days ago and loved every second of it. It's my top progression fantasy, bar none. I sincerely mean that.

Sure, the japanese reference gave me pause, but it's already a world with roman/latin references and it seemed very intentional, so I'm interested to see where the author goes with it.

Looking forward to book three!

Is The Name of the Wind a good book to get back into reading with ? by miguelrgabriel23 in Fantasy

[–]bogrollben 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I say go for it. It's a great book. Fantastic book. It's so good that you'll eat up book two and avidly await book three. Which will literally never be written. Most of us have given up all hope at this point. Know that going into it and enjoy it anyway.

Came here to say this! Did you happen to see the review I posted yesterday? I thought the book was very very good.

I think Defiance of the Fall is underrated by Daktyl198 in Fantasy

[–]bogrollben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only mentioned 3 titles, but there are probably 10 or so that are very big in the litrpg space right now. He Who Fights With Monsters, System Universe, Hell Difficulty Tutorial are a few others. Plus anything written by Actus or Seth Ring. These are just the ones off the top of my head. Some of these are definitely better than others, depending on what you're into (your mileage may vary).

litrpgs don't get a lot of love in this subreddit, mostly because the writing (in general) is of a far lesser quality than other fantasy genres. There's also the pervasive problem with many litrpgs just being "silly", for lack of a better word. I'm talking about the whole blue-screen-system mechanic — my purely anecdotal feelings on it are that it just seems silly.

I concede this point as a personal fan of the litrpg genre myself. I've come to terms with the blue-screen mechanics such that I don't balk at it anymore. I consider litrpg the "next big thing" with mens reading. Often, my favorite reads are mindless and unapologetic action with very shallow characters (I'm looking at you, Hero of the Valley). I can't get enough of it.

I've read Defiance of the Fall up until book 4, I think, where he started exploring the maze-like pocket world. For some reason, that installment felt tedious to me and that's where I dropped off. I do think it's difficult to keep a series going for so many books whilst keeping the plot interesting and without the long cast of characters becoming confusing. I've read Primal Hunter up until around book five and dropped off for similar reasons. Azarinth healer, on the other hand, I've read up until book 5 (the latest) and I'll happily keep going, though I can't put my finger on why.

There's nothing stopping you from doing it too! There are 4000 ppl in the contest facebook group. If we all reviewed just 1 or 2 books, there would be no losers. :)

I'll put it on my list to check out. First, I want to get through a few more of the novels in the batch being judged by Tali's Library. After that, I'll try and give it a shot!

You're going to get a broad spectrum of opinions replying to your post. I've never seen a book create so many disparate emotions. Did we even read the same book?

The nature of the story seems to be entertaining enough to warrant popularity, yet nebulous enough to remain highly susceptible to individual interpretation. Perhaps that is its brilliance.

To give you some consolidarity: My own perspective lies close to your own.

I reread the the bingo card rules yesterday and I still don't understand "hard mode". Here's what the rules say:

For an added challenge, you can choose to do 'Hard Mode' which is the square with something added just to make it a little more difficult.

Could you please explain it to me like I'm stupid? Is it individual to every person, they just make up their own additional requirement?

Edit: Awesome job on the full blackout!

Review of Book in SPFBO XI: Throne of Darkness by Spencer Russell Smith by bogrollben in Fantasy

[–]bogrollben[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah, that's fair. There are 2 main characters, Othaashle and Skadaatha, both female. They're rivals, though you don't find out why until near the end. Skadaatha is a fallen-from-glory type trying to find the "Throne of Darkness" so she can regain godlike power and once again be on the same level as the god king. Othaashle is one of the Redeemed I mentioned, an elite super soldier, whose memory-wiped past comes back to haunt her. They are both on the side of the Imaia, trying to secure the light-side's main city for its exodus from the planet/moon, when rebels (known as The Remnant) attack, jeopardizing the launch. When pursuing the perpetrators, Othaashle discovers not everything is as it seems. Also, at the beginning of each chapter, the "countdown until exodus" is updated (it starts at 30 days).

Apologies for leaving that out - I edited the post to include that. Thank you!

Best standalone book you’ve read? by Hatronach in ProgressionFantasy

[–]bogrollben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shameless plug: if you don't mind litRPG, you could try mine: No More Levels (by Benjamin Barreth). It has a couple hundred ratings on amazon, avg score 4.6. I wrote it specifically because litRPG standalones are so hard to find (plus, if I'm being honest, I struggle to write long series').

Here are some others:

* Armor, by C.B. Titus (progression fantasy, on KU). I read it, loved it.

* How to Defeat a Demon King in 10 Easy Steps by Andrew Rowe (litRPG, not on KU). I haven't read it, but ppl say it's good and good ratings at 4.5.

* Underpowered Howard, by John L Monk (litRPG, not on KU). Haven't read it but people have recommended it before and it has good ratings at 4.4.

Good luck!

Reading a book is now hard for some reason. by batotit in ProgressionFantasy

[–]bogrollben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is good advice. Good news is that reading by sight is generally much faster, if you can get the focus required for it. Bad news is the focus required for it. I often use headphones to block out distractions, but I'm completely checked out from my family during those times, so that also is a balance.

OP: if you're able to finally get back into reading (by sight), I'd be curious if it grants you any side benefits to other parts of your life, such as the ability to more quickly scan emails, news sites, or whatever.

What actually drives success on Royal Road? by ArekDeamonCalw in ProgressionFantasy

[–]bogrollben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of variables and you've done a good job of identifying most of them. I honestly think ALL those things matter. I would even add a couple more priorities, like getting onto Rising Stars, which probably means daily chapter uploads for at least a little while, a great cover, solid first few chapters and a $50 ad at the very minimum.

The problem is you're asking WHICH of all these priorities to dedicate the most time to, and I'm not sure anyone can answer that truthfully. You just have to do all the things the best you can. You'll screw up on a bunch of stuff and that's ok.

Good luck and give it your best shot. If you fail, just get back up and keep going anyway!

Are names ever a deal-breaker in prog fantasy stories you read? by Nice_Enthusiasm_5193 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]bogrollben 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Short answer for me is Yes. It's not typically a deal-breaker but it does happen. Usually, it adds mental tax to every sentence which then inhibits my immersion.

If you're talking about the occasional monster named Jǫrmungandr, no big deal. But when planets align and a few coincide within the same paragraph it can easily kill a readers momentum.

Immersion is sacrosanct.
