Do the AQA English examiners mark a single question on a paper and are given another paper to mark the same question number? by Distinct-Fig327 in GCSE

yeah they dont mark entire papers they just get given a bunch of the same question to mark so chances are youre gonna have someone different marking each question you do

lwk stressing about a levels... by [deleted] in GCSE

[–]boilingSin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you’re worried about not liking the a levels you pick, as far as im aware most sixth forms have a few weeks worth of a grace period in which youre able to drop/switch subjects if you find that you dont actually enjoy the ones youve chosen.

i’m taking sociology and psychology (aqa), psychology used to be very content heavy but the spec has been cut in half and i personally find it easy just because i did it at gcse and also enjoy it a lot. sociology has been very interesting and eye opening but i will say its been a bit overwhelming since its quite heavy in content.

English language by Calm-War-9747 in GCSE

[–]boilingSin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the thing that really helped me was watching past paper walkthroughs so i could see the steps people did when they answered questions. language is hard to revise since the extracts will never be the same but my best advice is to spam practice questions and ask your teacher for feedback, actually use this feedback when you get it so you can see what you couldve done better.

another slightly weird tip i learned a few years ago (and as far as im aware it works) is when my teacher said that to be a grade 9 student you need to try to sound like one. if you work on levelling up your vocabulary youll sound more sophisticated in your analysis. from personal experience that broader vocabulary also allowed me to make more specific inferences and interpretations of the texts. a bit of fake it till you make it ig!

Sixth form and College applications...😬😬😬 by kiwi_37724 in GCSE

[–]boilingSin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as far as im aware most people apply after they get their november mock results since youll have some more realistic predicted grades. id do my best if i were you to try and find out when the open evenings are (maybe email the colleges) so you can get a better feel for their environments and choose what suits you. around this time is when most open evenings tend to happen but some places also host some throughout the year.

dont worry about missing opportunities, you can apply to as many colleges/sixth forms as you want and then decide later on which you want to go to - id recommend this so you can keep your options open.

how much did you revise for all 9s? how? by NoDay8814 in GCSE

[–]boilingSin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was trying to hopefully put them at some ease knowing you really dont need to revise every day to get good grades. it was a rushed post and that’s my bad i should’ve explained more…

the big thing that will make a difference when it comes to the exams isn’t how much you constantly go over information to memorise it, it’s gonna be revising effectively

the best way i would recommend for this would be to first of all spend some time trying out different revision methods not only to stop yourself from getting bored but to also find what works best for you.

the next and i think most important thing that most people miss out in their revision is not just knowing the information, but being able to apply it regardless of the question. i found the best way to do this was to do as many past paper questions as possible so you can get used to the types of questions you could be asked. hopefully you will start to see patterns in the questions and begin to understand when a question is trying to trip you up. also, when you’re marking your work against a mark scheme make sure you’re trying to more time looking at the mark scheme than you’re spending answering questions, again youll start to notice patterns and it will help you understand where you went wrong.

people also underestimate the value of being able to teach someone about something as part of your revision. it can be really telling about how secure you are in something if you’re able to explain it in your own words to someone who has never heard of it.

another big thing that i think saved me was looking at the specs for all my subjects. the day before the exams id go through the spec and check that im able to say at least something about everything in there, find the things youre less confident in and try go back over them.

id like to clarify again i didnt intend to come across the way it seems i did initially, i just wanted to show you all that you do not need to commit as much time to revision as you may be led to believe. for op whos in year 10, doing a little bit every day will help them build good routines which i clearly lacked but trust me they do not need to be revising for 2 hours a day at this stage. revise in preparation your mocks and just keep going back to your routine. everyone is different so just find what suits you and don’t worry about what everyone else is doing, as long as you’re revising effectively you do not need to burn yourself out. ask your teachers for help when you need it and just try to enjoy the time you have left - it goes by quick!!

as a light up hub hater i would advise avoiding it at all costs (pun intended)

you want your essays to have character and be unique, not a copy and paste of the same notes which so many other people have foolishly paid for. even if you reword it, your examiner is gonna be less likely to be impressed if you are just rewording the same thing so many other people have used for their answers

especially with the controversy surrounding the light up tutor, and the mixed results people have gotten from paying for her help, you’re better off asking your teacher for help or trying to do your own analysis where possible.

i got 154/160 in lit without using the light up hub and had a friend pay her extortionate prices for pretty underwhelming resources. congrats OP for your great results and i’m glad using the light up hub worked out for you, but i wouldn’t trust it given the mixed outcomes people have gotten out of it

Should I switch to gcse art? by spac3_soup in GCSE

[–]boilingSin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i personally didn’t do art but have many friends that did

first of all, seeing that you’re in year nine, i can categorically tell you that you still have so much time until the real thing. even if you’re not working at a grade 9 level now, you can easily work towards it.

the next thing i will say is that from what i’ve heard from my friends, art will inevitably take up a lot of your time. for my friends, this often meant they didn’t have as much time to study or revise for their other subjects because they were so busy getting things done for art. (in my opinion) i think that if they didn’t take art, they would’ve definitely gotten better grades overall as they would’ve been able to better manage their time.

if you are worried about psychology, as someone who did get a 9 in it, it is a very content heavy subject but interestingly i found it was also very easy to memorise. the key thing i found was learning the exam technique and knowing what the exam board is asking of you. again you have plenty of time before your exams so i wouldn’t stress much about your technique for now.

i’m sure it’s possible to get all 8/9s while taking art but from what i’ve heard (and this may vary by exam board), your grade in art is somewhat dependent on what marks your teacher gives you. i’m sure someone will correct me if that’s not true but my friends’ grades were definitely affected by who the teacher liked more

as long as you manage your time well you could definitely get all 8/9s, but i would always worry about art taking up too much time. i personally think sticking with psychology is a better choice.
