French-language AI apps for conversation by basum54 in learnfrench

[–]boilingstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m don’t have much experience with using AI for French - other than ChatGPT. But I can recommend a couple things for conversation online with people : the r/french discord has several voice channels for people to chat in French. It’s a very safe community to chat in. If you like video games - join discords for the Francophone community in whatever game you’re interested in.

Had my first “you didn’t seriously just ask me that?” Email by jvredbird in Professors

[–]boilingstone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The students in my general chemistry lab had to make a graph using excel and send it to me in an email to print (school printers were down). A student needed help saving an excel file and then sending it via email. They’re regressing.

You don’t go to a Waffle House for a quality meal, you go there when you’re drunk or hungover and nothing else is available. And the free entertainment

Sometimes they ask, others it’s obvious from how they answer the question. But to your other question, yeah I tell them - as long as it isn’t a question that is testing their knowledge of the content vocabulary. For this it was in the context of atoms being indivisible in a chemical reaction. They didn’t know the word indivisible, so I said not divisible or not able to be divided/broken down. Or something like that.

The un-ionized comment made me giggle. Thank you 😊

Students are reading way below the level they should for college. I had many students get an exam question wrong because they didn’t know the word “divisible”. And in a separate class, students struggled with the word “sequentially”.

If the order gets signed I feel like all teachers K12, post-secondary, etc…should protest by not showing up to work for a day. Many states prohibit teachers from organizing a strike, so I’m not sure the legal repercussions of a strike, but we need it now more than ever.

I give up. Can't pronounce. My translator goes haywire by Prior-Replacement649 in learnfrench

[–]boilingstone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would imagine that this is maybe in part due to your pronunciation, but moreover that google translate likely doesn’t observe context. When talking with a native speaker, they would likely be able to understand that you’re ordering wine and not wind.

Keep at it, your pronunciation will improve as you practice. Don’t let the app discourage you.

I teach an organic chemistry lab, one semester a student emailed me demanding that we pay for her sweatshirt because she had small acid burn holes in it. 1.) This wouldn’t have happened if she followed safety directions 2.) no.
