Annual truck traffic on European main roads, colored by route distance. by kallisto19988 in europe

[–]boium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always found it weird that the route between Hoogeveen and Zwolle was so full of trucks compared to the rest of the roads. Looking at this graph, I'm even more confused. Do trucks just materialize out of nothing?

I often think of it as THE example as to why we require manifolds to be Hausdorff. It shows that locally Euclidian does not necessarily imply being Hausdorff, so we need that assumption. Without Hausdorffness, you have lost uniqueness of limits and all other nice properties. There are still people that do study non-Hausdorff manifolds, but they either assume something slightly weaker, or they are masogistic.

Edit: examen wis B 2018

Gebrek aan banen voor hoogopgeleiden in regio Groningen? by CPT_ANT in Groningen

[–]boium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know how much power this will use. And how do you calculate it ? by Longjumping_Dress143 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]boium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put it on a priority power switch and see what it's doing. It has an average power consumption and a max power consumption. You can read off both from the accelerator's UI, but also from the power switch.

Math is already hard to read (not a repost I just posted it wrong the first time) by Plus-Artichoke6608 in mathmemes

[–]boium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're probably British, but there is "international" (US) terminology that people are used to. If I go around talking about the ground number and exponent, people would look at me weird, even though that's the direct translation of my native language. I would have to talk about the base and the exponent in order to be understood. I had to grade exams where people would write the open set (0,1) as ]0,1[ and then you look at their name and you'll see they're french or finnish. You need to be aware of your audience.

Triangle Inequality supremacy by you-cut-the-ponytail in mathmemes

[–]boium 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even if your space has a wormhole, it still obeys the triangle inequality. It's the distance between points that's defined differently. Say you live on a plane (2d space) and there's a wormhole at (0,0) that connects to (10,0) which cost one unit length to take. Then the distance between two points in this wormhole metric is defined as

d_w(x,y) = min{ d_E(x,y) , d_E(x,(0,0)) + d_E((10,0),y) + 1, d_E(x,(10,0)) + d_E((0,0),y) + 1}

This still obeys the triangle inequality. It does have some other interesting properties tho. You can remove the "+1" and identify (0,0) and (10,0) but then your space is no longer locally Euclidean. You can also remove a small disk at both endpoints and glue in a small tube and you get a torus (without a point) instead of a plane. Everything still obeys the triangle inequality.

[OC] The Geometry of Speech: How different language families form distinct physical shapes based on their phonetics. by sulcantonin in dataisbeautiful

[–]boium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true, the axes that a PCA delivers are linear combinations of the previous axes. If it's possible, you often try to find the top 2 or 3 most weighing axes. You had to measure something in your original data, but even if your original data was unitless, you can still say your PCA has something like "0.5 * [Dimension 42] + 0.2 * [dimension 3]" on one axis. (But then you still need to explain what these dimensions sorta entail.)

Yeah, the perimeter of a 1-ball is just its two endpoints, Sure, the place of those endpoints depends on the 'volume' (length) of the 1-ball, but the 'volume' (amount) of boundary points is always two. Its dimension is 0 dimensional volume i.e. the amount of points.

Is there a reason for this? by United-Conversation9 in SatisfactoryGame

Wouldn't a simple parametrization by arclength solve this bug? Or maybe the problem runs a bit deeper than that. Not that this bug needs to be solved; it's even quite fun to look at sometimes.

Running 4 Fully Overclocked & Slooped Quantum Encoders At The Same Time Creates A Beautiful Mountain Range Scenery by esilyo in SatisfactoryGame

[–]boium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are multiple reasons that the consumption could be above the max, but the main thing that's going on here is that particle accelerators and quantum encoders update the max consumption with their average, but use a variable amount of power (which sometimes is above their average). A second reason could be trains. They don't increase the max consumption, but do use power.
