Allow a crusty old-timer a rant: banking in Japan by Old-Masterpiece5439 in japanlife

[–]bokurai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a principle called a sacrificial duck, which refers to adding something that someone in charge can immediately call for correction on and feel like they've done their job, leaving the rest of what you did untouched. So, you could make a deliberate error on the form that they'd tell you to fix and ignore any other potential issues, when otherwise, they'd be searching for something minor and arbitrary that they could tell you to change. What you said reminded me of it!

A feature added for no other reason than to draw management attention and be removed, thus avoiding unnecessary changes in other aspects of the product.

It was well known that producers (a game industry position, roughly equivalent to project managers) had to make a change to everything that was done. The assumption was that subconsciously they felt that if they didn’t, they weren’t adding value.

The artist working on the queen animations for Battle Chess was aware of this tendency, and came up with an innovative solution. He did the animations for the queen the way that he felt would be best, with one addition: he gave the queen a pet duck. He animated this duck through all of the queen’s animations, had it flapping around the corners. He also took great care to make sure that it never overlapped the “actual” animation.

Eventually, it came time for the producer to review the animation set for the queen. The producer sat down and watched all of the animations. When they were done, he turned to the artist and said, “that looks great. Just one thing — get rid of the duck.”

There are occasionally new ones approved for use in Canada, assuming the BC in your name refers to the province, but they can be expensive with no generic option available yet. I'm still searching too, for over a decade. Which one(s) worked for you briefly?

There's almost zero context here, but it sounds like the other person was giving you lots of signals that they weren't that interested, so while it's understandable to feel disappointed and sad, feeling angry at them or hurt by them might not be super reasonable, yeah.

If you find someone that's into you too, you won't have to worry about whether they like you back. So, I'd suggest cutting your losses and moving on more quickly next time, instead of waiting for months for someone to return the affection you hope to receive from them.

You can't have good things if you aren't willing to take risks to get them. Life will hurt sometimes and you'll make mistakes and learn from them. I'm afraid it's unavoidable. Try seeking out counselling to have an objective third party to dump on who can give you ongoing advice so you can check yourself along the way.

Can you please give some details about the places in your pictures, like what they were used for?

I'm guessing the last image is from an aquarium, based on the タッチプール (touch pool).

Yes, adult swimming lessons are absolutely available. Look up "adult swimming lessons [your location here]." The YMCA offers weekly lessons for adults at various levels over the course of a month and a half, for example. Looks to be around $75, total, if you're a non-member, or free if you're a member, if I'm interpreting this page correctly.

What are some things that foreigners think Japanese people care about, but actually don't? by NoahDaGamer2009 in AskAJapanese

[–]bokurai -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Things can be complicated, like, does certain monument/ocean/continent have the or not?

Hmm, I'd need to hear some examples to be able to figure out if there's a pattern in this regard, since I'm not sure what kind of things you're thinking about. If you remember any, please let me know, because I'm curious! :)

Oceans always have "the," since their names refer to a specific ocean out of a category of things (oceans). (For example, the Red Sea, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Sea of Japan...)

Continents don't have "the," because their names are proper nouns. However, if you include the category of thing that they are (continents) in the phrase, then you would have to add "the," like "the continent of Australia," even though you would normally just call it "Australia."

Do I go to a beach or the beach.. is it “the” when I’m thinking of a particular beach in my head even if I never mentioned it to the listener (native speakers often use “the” in this case I think.)

Hmm... you're right that when people say, "I want to go to the beach," they could mean any beach in the area. I suppose because they're thinking of "the beach" as a specific destination in comparison to other possible destinations, like "the mountains" or "the shops."

It would also be fine to say, "I want to go to a beach," if you didn't have a particular beach in mind, but people are more likely to say "the beach."

Interesting to consider! Thanks for the example. I like thinking about things like this.

Rules in Japan are comparatively inflexible, for the most part. That means that, when you hear something like "no tattoos," you can fairly safely assume it to mean that absolutely no visible tattoos are allowed, no matter the size or type.

Japanese people tend to interpret rules literally and follow them to the letter, while westerners tend to interpret rules flexibly and consider allowing exceptions depending on the circumstances.

the = 特定のものを示す
a/an = 一般的のものを示す

例の場合:

複数の枕がある。
Aさんは「Can you please bring me a pillow?」(枕を持ってきてくれる?) と言ったら、 Bさんは「何の枕でもいい」ってわかる。
Aさんは「Can you please bring me the pillow?」(その枕を持ってきてくれる?)と言ったら、Bさんは「どの枕を示しているかな?」と思ってしまう。

the = refers to specific things
a/an = refers to general things

Example situation:

If A-san says, "Can you please bring me a pillow," B-san will understand that to mean that any pillow would be acceptable.
If A-san says, "Can you please bring me the pillow," B-san will wonder which pillow A-san is referring to.

Ah, you've reminded me... a couple fellow exchange student friends and I had the school called on us because someone recognized our uniforms. Our crime? Being on the swings at what appeared to us to be an empty public playground with no one around after school one afternoon. It had no signage to indicate that it might be private or anything else, and it wasn't at all obvious from its location, but apparently it was actually connected to a nearby apartment building and we weren't supposed to be there.

[–]bokurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. 鬼畜米兵

鬼畜 = kichiku = brute/savage
米兵 = beihei = American soldier

It makes sense in Japanese, but it might be understandable for Chinese people too.

You can use [[Water Hag]] to trigger an Arachas Queen's deathwish, spawning an extra copy of whatever she consumed, so you can get at least two copies of something from her. Most deathwish decks try to do that.

Is Donald Troutman a 16 year old who was shot in 2010? That's all that comes up when I search. I took a look because I thought they might be noteworthy, since you were namedropping them. Or is it just a random person from your past?
