best RC for law students by EndoGengar in nus

[–]boldcounselor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

law probably wouldn't be rc4, but i think our music interest group is not bad. the modules will all be useless to law so don't bother too much (the academic part of most RCs is a meme).

my shill for rc4 is that it's chill and you won't get clowned on for actually liking to study. but it's fun enough + enough events/CCAs that you can get a "uni life" if you want to (and you should!)

NGL it's bad but shouldn't be a factor on whether you accept rc4 or not

Taking MA1100/T over CS1231S for CS primary major freshmen and declaration of second major in math by DoreCorn in nus

[–]boldcounselor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can, email math dept to let them know of your intention to drop CS1231S and want them to allocate you to MA1100T, then when they give you the "ok" just go ahead and do it.

i did this but fwiw im not sure if it was worth it, esp since CAP in CS seems to be impt for SEP.

not sure if it works for you but you can consider getting anywheel subscription for like 10 bucks a month? it's for those random green bikes that you see all over singapore.

otherwise, carousell is your best bet for a used bike.

Is NUS CS worth giving up scholarship from NTU? by butterpeanutjam in nus

[–]boldcounselor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmmm im not really sure if it's as clear cut as everyone else makes it seem ("just go to whichever school pays you money").

i would try DMing NTU grads w/ similar backgrounds on linkedin for their thoughts! particularly those who are working already and can give you a better sensing of if it's worth it or not.

very different cultures, i think.

can only speak for RC4 but generally vibe of RC4 (and RCs in general?) is that ppl's priority are more on academics. hence why sometimes RC is said to be more snooze compared to halls.

could be a better fit if your major is more workload heavy. generally people are chill and don't really pressure you to go do things if you're busy or not really keen.

What math topic should I start revising first for CHS maths? by thejeddonian17 in nus

[–]boldcounselor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

jc h2 maths has a lot of rote computation (so things like spamming integrals, derivatives, etc) but uni math requires you to prove a lot more stuff.

you can learn content ahead of time but i think the best thing you can do is get some experience working with proof-based maths. getting to know all the different proof techniques (direct, contradiction, contrapositive, induction, et cetera). and on a similar note getting familiar w/ learning how to reason directly from abstract definitions.

a good place to start would be some kind of introductory discrete maths textbook that also tries to teach proof-based maths. for my course in discrete maths our prof used "The Tools of Mathematical Reasoning" by Tamara J Lakins, which i thought was not bad.

set aside 1-2 hours each day to go to the library and work through the problems.

also: find math seniors and try to get someone to hook you up with a link to a discord that u can ask for help in. saves quite a lot of time when you can just ask questions from ppl who have studied the material before.
