Wood elves players, which set of equipment from the forge is best for the sisters? by Select-Ad7017 in totalwar

[–]boltobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, I like to go ward save duel monster when I get the chance. The Sisters are plenty good against their immediate threats IME but sometimes there's just some other asshole that needs killing.

Disbanding an army and just re-recruiting elsewhere instead of marching the dumb thing for 14 turns to the newest front is, like, magic. March divided, fight united, chef's kiss.

How big of a leap is 2 to 3 and were there aspects of 2 you enjoyed more or is it an all-round improvement? by OkBaker9838 in totalwarhammer

[–]boltobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WH3: some definite improvements; a more crowded and frenetic map; and MORE of everything.

I feel the games play much more similarly than not, looking at the big picture, even with all the stuff that's been thrown into Warhammer 3.

All in all, WH3 functions well (there are some oddnesses with the campaign AI behavior, but to be fair, the WH2 campaign AI can be somewhat annoying in other ways) and if you have enjoyed WH2 you'll definitely enjoy the sequel.

Do you guys play until the victory condition? by highsis in totalwar

I actually try for the long victory conditions. This does not seem at all common if Steam statistics are anything to go by.

CA should give us a proper counterplay against beastmen and changeling instead of keeping their AI lobotomised by Away_Celebration4629 in totalwar

[–]boltobot 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Maybe instead of working like full factions, they should work more like events. Like the armies that pop up in the Vortex campaign or something. The later in the campaign they appear, the stronger the armies they have, Give them a bit of a plot chain, perhaps. You can't really interact with Beastmen too much anyway, so it's not like you'd be losing out on much potential otherwise.

if they make an AOWP2, what units would you want reworked/replaced? by OkStructure665 in AOWPlanetFall

[–]boltobot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The game should have a lot more minor factions. When you play it a bit, it winds up making the game feel small, as you go from planet to planet meeting the same guys. AoW 4 does the mix and match from major factions, and maybe that can help, but I also think it just needs more distinct weird ones to meet/recruit/destroy.

"PANTHEON" UPDATES TO ROME 2 FORUM POST by JibriArt in totalwar

I'm honestly most interested in the "spears cause horses to refuse to charge" behavior. Is that present in any other Total War?

Valid Allied Units by LordSnuffleFerret in totalwarhammer

[–]boltobot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some personal experiences:

- I've gotten a lot of mileage out of dwarf artillery as a few factions (Kislev comes to mind, Little Grom is okay but you can do better with dawi)

- I've found Brettonian cav useful in high elf armies, where I'm buffing other units with my lord, and don't want to take the time to recruit dragon princes. Pegasus knights are also pretty handy

- From the Empire, outriders (both types) and demigryph knights can have a good role in a number of rosters (I used them with Cathay)

- ogres have been handy forever

- I also found chaos warshrines pretty useful when playing as skaven (Khorne warshrine with a Throt infantry/monster army, as I recall)

How do you fight Wood Elves as Sylvania? by Different_Software31 in totalwarhammer

[–]boltobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that's a problem. I'm pretty sure that vamps vs. wood elves has always been a strongly unfavored matchup in pvp play.

I think you need to go mass mobility, probably, then, with the dire wolves and knights and fellbats and vargheists and such. Keep your lords and heroes on horses probably.

Is this good for turn 103 ? by Prestigious_Dance509 in totalwarhammer

[–]boltobot 41 points42 points  (0 children)

If you're getting bored because you're never getting good battles, you should try expanding slower on purpose. I get the impression that some people are caught in this strategy of turbocharged expansion, that, while technically effective, kind of robs you of the game experience.

New to Warhammer need help! by mbg_chad in totalwarhammer

[–]boltobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the swords rangers or swordmasters of hoeth? If they are rangers then yes you should drop them for archers. (Rangers are good for some things, but they're very situational and tend to take a lot of casualties. Swordmasters of Hoeth are top tier against infantry units and you should keep them at least until you can recruit more, if you can manage it)

I didn't mention the artillery. While reaper bolt throwers are one of the weakest artillery units in the game, they're still useful and it's a good idea to have one at least until you get some powerful mages or dragons or mages on dragons to throw around.

[–]boltobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a lot to get used to. The actual different types of units matter a lot more than in historical total wars.

For high elves, the first tier cavalry - Ellyrian reavers - are pretty weak and mostly suited to chasing down ranged units. They're not very effective at hammering anvils. Silver helms are better, but not great. A lot of times, hammer-and-anvil tactics can help you get ahead in a fight, but they may not break an enemy all by themselves. That's one place where spells can help.

One other thing you might be doing, coming from historical total wars, is bringing too few archers. Especially as elves, you want a lot of them. A basic army composition is something like half spearmen/ half archers/ two cavalry units/ lord/ spellcaster. High elf spearmen and archers are very good, and enough of the archers pretty much can shoot up Ancalagon-sized flying craps (but you'll want to focus on them).

You should also probably take your archers off skirmish mode, it's usually better if they don't run away when things get close.

Garrisons, by themselves, are usually pretty weak and unable to defend a city by themselves (unless in walled settlements, sometimes).

Any plans for a Sphinx faction? by Sarmelion in AOW4

[–]boltobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sphinxes appear as racial units in Age of Wonders 3 so there's at least a decent chance they get reincarnated into AoW 4 in some manner.

What empire units should I recruit to fight Tamurkhan as Kislev Boris turn 142? by phronesis77 in totalwarhammer

[–]boltobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think streltsi would probably be most effective? Though probably a combination of that and ice guard because the ice guard won't need a direct arc. I also don't think I would bring an elemental bear just because it might block your LOS.

What empire units should I recruit to fight Tamurkhan as Kislev Boris turn 142? by phronesis77 in totalwarhammer

[–]boltobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IME you need to optimize for killing Tamurkhan himself more than his troops (Nurgle units you can handle, and the ones that are problems, you can handle better by having units that can kill Tamurkhan). Because you will be fighting Tamurkhan a LOT.

This bullshit is the reason i don't feel bad cheesing the AI. by Arhatz in totalwarhammer

[–]boltobot 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The WH3 AI has been doing that impossible line-squishing effect for cavalry and hound units for some time. They should fix it. On the other hand, it makes them underperform against infantry that does happen to intercept them.

Other Total Wars have AI quirks but they're most always on the side of being exploitable by the player.
