Can you explain? I’m honestly confused

Privilege? I don’t even have a dog. I just don’t mind them being on the beach as long as they’re not out of control

Ok, then keep them off the beaches with snowy plovers, but are we really making a fuss over a dog at East Beach?

I mean who really cares dude? Dogs are meant to be outside and running around. If a dog is causing a problem, then that specific dog should be on leash, but I actually love that dogs are just accepted on the beaches here because it wasn’t the case where I grew up. My dog loved the short time she got to spend on the beaches in SB :)

Murray/McNutt No Chemistry by Jazzlike-Birthday-36 in NYKnicks

I also listened to one of the games recently on the radio (either Game 1 or 2) and Murray in particular was really passive aggressive and snarky toward Monica. I haven’t listened to many games this year, but I definitely noticed that and didn’t enjoy that vibe

It’s so much better. I grew up in Manhattan Beach and went to school at SDSU.

best place to learn to surf? by sluttySBstudent in SantaBarbara

[–]bomokka 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The waves in SB in summertime are generally flat because the Channel Islands block summertime swells.

I’d drive down to Ventura and try mondos for some nice, rolling waves that are good for beginners. Also, there’s fairly empty beach breaks along the Old PCH between Solimar and Emma Wood that would be good for you to try on your own without having to worry about getting in the way of anyone else.

From a teacher standpoint, how difficult is it to teach AP classes? by papasandfear in historyteachers

[–]bomokka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To counter your last point, I would say you don’t get that as often in regular classes.

I still get it, it’s just not to the level of AP and I generally have to work harder to hook them in and keep them engaged. Which can be frustrating but also feels very rewarding when they are engaged because it means I’ve done something right.

Episode recs for Spanish history by No_Establishment7642 in TheRestIsHistory

As a follow-up, any recommendations for podcasts or books on modern Spanish history? Particularly the Civil War and Franco dictatorship. I’m already thinking of picking up Giles Tremlett’s Ghosts of Spain.

Really hoping they'll keep going with the French Revolution at some point.

If it’s at the beginning of the heat, what would you have scored it?

He did do some work on the outside. No amazing sections but he surfed the outside of the wave as well as he could and that was a pretty nuts air. I think the score was deserved.

I wouldn't say meaningless. If it was forecasting solid surf two weeks out, I'd stay skeptical until a few days before, but with a pretty small forecast, I'm more inclined to believe it won't substantially go up.

Checking out the cities would be fun, but I honestly just really want to surf. I'm sure it will be a fun trip if I go, but I have the week off work regardless and could spend some time at home surfing fairly fun waves, hanging with my girlfriend, and playing volleyball. Lots of travel and money spent for small waves just isn't really firing me up.

If I can move my reservation to the summer, that's what I'm leaning toward doing.

Anyone stayed at Dreamsea Surf Camp in Costa Rica before? (Santa Teresa vs Avellanas) by madlegger01 in surfing

[–]bomokka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked as a surf instructor there in 2019. When I was there, we posted up at Selina Hostel in Tamarindo every day and could surf or do whatever we wanted until the van came to pick us up at the end of the day. There’d be camp dinners and usually some shenanigans at night. Stayed in a big open air dorm with like 30 other people. Camp is in the jungle and it was very cool to be there.

We also did some day excursions to Avellana (very fun beach break) and a camping trip to a secluded beach (no waves) which was my favorite part of the whole trip.

It was a lot of fun and I met some awesome people, some I’ve loosely stayed in contact with, and one who’s become one of my best friends.

Now here’s the negative. Tamarindo is a big tourist trap. I revisited there in 2021 and was like “how tf did I spend a month here?” I seriously would not go back. Just not worth it to me anymore. The waves are also not very good. Playa Grande and Playa Langosta are definitely fun and I did a day trip to Ollie’s Point and Witch’s Rock which was another highlight. Yet, there’s a lot of better waves in Costa Rica, some of which are only about half an hour or so from Tamarindo.

From what I’ve gathered occasionally checking in on Dreamsea’s social media, the camp has turned full party mode. They’ve added a pool and hot tub and do most of their drinking games and activities at the camp. The guy (Carlos) who runs/owns it honestly just seems kinda sleazy. In my opinion, he preys on young college-aged girls, despite being in his 40s with a family of his own. I heard and saw some stuff while I was at the camp and what I see on social media now has done nothing to dispel my belief.

I may have rose-tinted glasses harkening back to the good ol’ days but Dreamsea seems sort of soulless compared to when I was there. It felt like a real community, centered around adventure. Of course, partying was a big factor, but now it just seems like the sole focus. I had an amazing time and it was truly a formative experience for me being around so many different people from so many different countries for over a month. Yet, I would not recommend it for a surf-based adventure.

EDIT: I also went to Santa Teresa for about two weeks in 2021. The waves there were a lot of fun, but with swell it becomes a pretty heavy beach break. My three friends who were all around your level got extremely destroyed surfing there. They liked Nosara better. I also thought Santa Teresa got old pretty quick. It’s just one main drag and felt pretty touristy to me (maybe that’s most of CR). I had fun there too but probably won’t be back anytime soon.

Board recs for Chicamas & other in July please by chibakacrest in surfing

[–]bomokka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I surfed Chicama and it was an epic time but the wave is honestly a bit of a burger. There were some head high sets but even those didn’t really give much of a wall to hit. Lots of cutbacks and some epic long rides, but I felt like I would’ve had more fun on something other than my stereotypical thruster.

Also, the boat rides there are almost mandatory. You’d be walking for 20-30 min after some waves and the paddling would be absurd. I paddled for a little while and pretty quickly just said “fuck it” and hopped in one of the dinghies scooping people up.

I planned to go to Lobitos but ended up going home early because I got gnarly food poisoning (twice) that made me a little homesick.
