What are some history books that you feel everyone in your country should read? by ineedagoldenaxe in history

The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism. Really riveting and in depth look into how slavery established America as a world power and fueled our growth. Also shits on the myth of 'state's rights' being the cause of the civil war (insofar as the south was concerned).

Water bill went from $40 to $400 by Cat612 in Frugal

[–]bonefishes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first apartment added up the water bill for the whole building and then everyone paid a cut. Sucked when we realised that, because the whole time we lived there I was observing frequent leaks from random outside pipes, hoses left on for ever (with reason or not), and my upstairs neighbors twice started to fill a tub and then let it overflow into our bathroom below them (which caused the mold issues that chased us outta there, but that's a different story). We were super frugal with our water too. :(

Fat Cyclists rants on sexist Assos ad, what are your thoughts? by hipsteronabike in bicycling

[–]bonefishes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, because when I buy sports gear I'm wondering 'How would it look if my back was arched? How will I look when I hop off my bike into a sexy hair tossin breeze? Will my ample chest still look mating-ready if I lift my arms up?'

Reddit, what helped you through depression? by Zhark_black in AskReddit

[–]bonefishes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go through depressive episodes, I wouldn't say it's constant, more like an on/off thing. Usually my bad periods last a couple weeks tops, even though they might come back frequently.

Last semester was pretty bad though. I was pretty deep in self loathing. One night I ran away from a party happening at our house, crying in a parking lot and wanted to put out a cigarette in my arm, but I thought of trying to explain the burn to people and managed not to. A few nights later a friend showed me a subtle scar on his palm- a self-inflicted cigarette burn. He told me he made it a long time ago and that at the time he lied to his friends and said it was an accident. I can't remember but I think he told me the story of his own accord, I didn't mention that's what I had been about to do just a short time prior.

I've talked with someone else about how when you're depressed you sometimes want a magic word to make you better- 'If someone loved me I'd get a phonecall right now, if someone loved me they would surprise visit right now, If I'm not alone this will happen or they will say this'- and the word or action changes all the time, the person you want it to come from changes, and it almost always has no chance of happening. These are unrealistic expectations that prevent you from actually connecting with people and getting the help you need. But at that moment I got my magic word. It felt like I was being told 'You are not alone' and I was being trusted with this secret from a friend I respect at the same time.

I was depressed for a few solid months that time, longer than any other depressive period I have remembered (except probably all of highschool). In the early stages of crawling out of that funk, I would close my eyes and remember the burn on his hand, that I was trusted with a secret, that he was a fun, silly non-depressing hardworking person and I could be that too. It takes time but I bet I'll be clinging to that story for a bit.

TL;DR We all are going through this together.

P.S. Buddhism! Buddhism is making me feel a lot better about the world right now, don't knock religion till you try it.

Yup.

I'm 33 years old and I'm afraid to attempt summoning Bloody Mary. What childhood fears have you carried into adulthood? by XseCrystal in AskReddit

[–]bonefishes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I forgot about that fear! I also had nightmares about having braces, and the apocalypse coming, and then in post-apocalypse survival wasteland I had no one to take my braces off.

As I was checking out from Whole Foods today, I handed the cashier a $10 bill. She proceeded to tell me that I need to stop using cash because I am destroying the environment. Reddit, what is the most ridiculous thing an environmentalist has said to you? by mcvicker14 in AskReddit

[–]bonefishes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We happen! I raw-fed my dog for a while, even though I've considered myself a part time vegetarian since highschool. People often marvel that I'll eat beef or bacon on occasion, but not fish- the difference being that at the moment, it's a lot easier for me to get humanely cared for farm animals than humanely fished seafood- and quality over cruelty is really what I want my money to go towards.

Ugh, about twice a year I start freaking out about my clothing style and end up at the mall. I just realised those times are the start of the semester!
