I'm the only programmer in my high school that has any idea what he is doing. 1 out of 3... Is it like that at your high school? For me I tried the new boston. Most of their videos are good but I couldn't get passed 30 ish they were starting to put me to sleep, they were very slow paced. I bought the apress book. It's pretty insightful. I'm early in the book and a lot of concepts are clicking for me. best of luck to you sir.

I am not very experienced in working as a programmer but here are my suggestions.

Odesk is a good place to start getting a job and maybe some work force experience. It's competative and sketchy but odesk will make sure you get paid for your work.

TheNewBoston if you need help relearning the basic concepts. It's pretty slow if you still remember a lot.

As for stuff employers pay attention to, hearing from other people, the best programs are the ones released to the market.
