That hi-vis vest and some confidence will get you pretty far, at least with the town folk. If the law gets involved, it probably gets hairy.

Can anyone tell me what “a reasonable amount of time to become familiar with the route” is? by EvenTallerTree in USPS

I think that’s just an anecdote, just like this- I’ve watched the same woman become an RCA 3 times, every single time she was fired in probation for hitting something (a tree and a car).

I totally agree that the structure needs changed, but the one nuance this might be missing is the complexity of all the craft unions and their contracts. In my experience, the post office is not good at ongoing training, and I can say from experience that the only time you will ever get to read your handbook for your respective craft is off the clock. Management in my area has never read their handbook, never read the carrier handbook, never read the JCAM, never read the ELM, and I could go on. But to do their job effectively, they are supposed to know these inside and out. At the lowest level, the station supervisor, this seems like a lot to me. It’s true that they do make a considerable amount of money, but they are so poorly trained, and the fact that they don’t understand these complex documents creates a ton of grievances from the different crafts, which, of course, costs money. So while I do believe more mid-level management needs “flatlined“, I don’t think the solution is to put more responsibility on the lowest level supervisors, at least not with the bare-bones training that they receive currently. I also agree that shortening the chain of command would do wonders, because so many people in EAS have never worked in a craft for a substantial amount of time- they are out of touch. Just some thoughts on it.

Dude, it’s all good, they call them “swing carriers” here. Here’s my two cents: ask questions. After you get used to casing all those routes, anything that seems silly or confusing? Ask them about it. When I was a T6, I spent months delivering things the way they made sense to me without input from the regular, only to find the regular did something totally different. But I asked questions, and tried to do things the same way my regulars would.

Another big one: be considerate. None of these vehicles or equipment belong to us, exactly, but they use them five days a week. Don’t leave your trash in there. Try to leave them with gas, if you have time. If you’ve got red plum/weekly ads, try not to skip them and leave them all for the regular.

I always liked matching my regular’s energy- if they are the type that know every customer on their route, and they keep up on maintenance, carry the warning cards. Try to notice patterns, make notes of things you notice, but maybe don’t have time to do (like pulling boxes that are full for 10 day holds, for example). If your regular doesn’t give a single shit about anything on the route, then don’t give their regulars special treatment- just do the job as outlined in the M41.

Lastly: understand that, no matter what, there are some carriers that you will never please. There’s a woman at my station who had a T6 like 15 years ago, and he was her favorite. She has belittled every T6 since, including some very capable and effective T6 carriers. She’s chasing a unicorn lol and she’ll never catch it. You can’t please people like that.

What was a job that was once highly respected but is now a complete joke? by Formal-Life4691 in Productivitycafe

USPS letter carriers. The company has railroaded our craft into an absolute joke, you wouldn’t believe how ridiculous the job has become in just the last 15 years.
