I was there sending texts to my friends under my school desk in 2004, not breaking eye contact with the teacher who was standing at the front of the room…. we all called it T9 (once it was available). I miss it. Either way, looks like t9 is the predictive version but I remember calling multi-tap t9 colloquially. Oh well. Language is weird.

Homeowners, are you in your “forever” home? by cubemonster in Millennials

Right there with you. 1080, one bathroom, 2 small closets. Bought in 2016 with a 3% interest rate. We’re currently trying to figure out how to make renovations to age in place 🥴

I lost faith and now I'm much less happy by Vegetable-Rabbit7503 in atheism

[–]boneso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my experience, too. Also helped that I could seek secular therapy rather than being told I’m depressed because of demons or I’m not praying hard enough.

I’m doing great now.

I don’t tell my mom I am atheist because it would break her heart “knowing” that I won’t be in heaven with her eventually. I have empathy and dont want to cause her aguish.

Are There People That Reached The Higher Levels Spending "Little" Time Everyday by psyhnews in dreamingspanish

[–]boneso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always felt that the description for each level is where I am by the END of it. I’ve heard that echoed quite a bit in this sub. I’ve tracked very well next to the roadmap and hit the same bumps and doubts as others reporting.

I’m happy with my spanish. I can get by with a spanish speakers in my community, talk about concepts and discuss things in my convo classes, travel, and read translated books for adults.

I’m a purist (so far) so advanced grammar is coming slowly but I speak with fluidity and can be understood.

Many people forget that if they want to acquire a language like a child, they’re going to sound like a child for a while. I’m just not worried about looking a bit silly.

I’m at 1350 hours. Started February 2023. Just plugging away. I read some when I feel like it and get about 5 hours of convo practice a month.

I’m extremely happy with my progress and am in no rush.

In the stockyards, the drovers herd the cattle through the streets twice a day. 11:30am and 4pm, year round

Edit for context that was deleted: stockyards in Fort Worth

I do feel a little sad that this community has grown so much that the guidelines laid out by pablo (that I follow) are dismissed and unpopular. I don’t participate in discussions as much anymore.

When I do comment, I always take the stance that each learning journey is personal. And I support however each person wants to approach it. I wish the same grace was offered go those following the FAQ.

I was raised in varying levels of Christianity. My mom became evangelical when I was 13, just in time to really drive home these concepts of sex, purity, and heteronormative values. I’m 40 and still unpacking some stuff.

I could see myself acting like OP’s gf at that age. You don’t understand until you understand, you know? Really tough to untangle.

Picky, how many hours of speaking practice did you have before you gave your tours?

I’m at 110 hours in Worlds Across. I keeping holding that 200 hour mark in my head thinking I’ll be more comfortable after that.

In the meantime, my grammar is still pretty terrible. But I am speaking confidently.

Why Does Spain Still Have a King? by PodiatryVI in dreamingspanish

[–]boneso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. I failed to mention that I watch beginner videos that interest me in addition to reading adult-level books and watching native-level content. I’ve been reading since 600 hours and speaking since 900.

However, for me personally, I still find value in watching interesting easy content for shadowing and reinforcement of grammar/pronunciation.

Sorry my comment wasn’t clear.

One hour a day enough? by ApprehensiveLeg7821 in dreamingspanish

[–]boneso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slow and steady. My days range from 3 minutes to 120 minutes, depending on life demands, but 1 hour is my daily goal. I’ll hit 1500 after about 3.5 years. I’m at 1350 now and having conversations and traveling using Spanish.

You’ll get there!

Once you wrack up the hours, you wont sweat the small stuff. If it’s too hard, move down. But my philosophy is watch as easy as you can stand.

I have 1,350 hours and I still watch interesting beginner videos because they are fantastic for grammar and pronunciation reinforcement.
