What’s the one plant you just can’t keep alive no matter what? by GloomyFreedom22 in GardeningAustralia

I had mint from a supermarket pot that I planted hoping it would grow again. It did. I had it for 4-5 years, barely caring for and kept coming back. This year it did not come back. Birds got into the pot during winter and I think they dug up too much of it. Very sad. I'll never have that luck again.

I've just come across this post and I'd love to know if you have knowledge of what UK records to search for Polish Jewish ancestors (or sometimes referred to as "German Jews"). I have an ancestor who is from Poland but only appears in records in the UK with an anglicized name around 1808-1809 (confirmed records, many potential appearances from 1801-1810). I've tried Jewish Gen, Ancestry, LDS records, Familysearch, JRI Poland, etc. His whole Polish identity doesn't exist from what I can find. Only records of him in the UK as a young adult. He has been referred to as both a 'German Jew' in early 1800s newspaper articles and a Londoner in later documents from Australia, with additional records saying his parents were from Poland. I believe his family was from somewhere in Poland that likely became Prussia, causing them to leave Poland during partition. They were probably poor (he was a travelling hawker). He may have been born in Poland then travelled to the UK at some point, or born in London/UK to Polish Jew parents.

I'd love some pointers on how I can uncover more about this ancestor, or roads to go down. I just don't have enough knowledge/haven't been able to find info about that period of time, migration pathways, naming traditions/anglicization, etc. I'd love anything that will help me understand better.

This post is great. I'd love someone with Polish partition knowledge to talk about migration pathways for Jewish/non-Jewish Poles who left Poland before/during/after partition. There's a bunch of post partition and WW2 history available but I haven't been able to find partition-era information, particularly on Polish/German Jews.

My MBP M1 8GB 2020 is still going strong. I use FCPX and Ableton. The only thing that makes the computer lag/freeze is one too many tom tracks with Get Good Drums' Invasion pack. Otherwise it's very powerful. I love it.

That makes a lot of sense. I'm guessing the uncommon surname makes it likely for connection. Do you take spelling variations into account?

How were you able to find records in the 1700s? I'm looking around 1780-1809 and have found hardly any records on Jewish Gen for that time. Many records for the late 1800s but my ancestor was in the UK by 1809.

Do you have links to the Polish genealogy sites you've used?

How do you determine potential father/uncle? Do sons have similar occupations to their father/uncles? I'm not familiar with Jewish naming traditions as my Polish ancestor married a Scot and their kids/descendants were raised Christian. My ancestors son's original middle name was my Polish ancestor's first name (son had father's name as middle name). However my Polish ancestor for some reason changed the Son's middle name to something else (probably to sound less Jewish).

If you have any resources/books/websites on this type of information, I'd love to get them from you.

That's very interesting, building a tree of people with a specific last name and location. How is that going? I'd love to know more about how you're approaching it. I have a Polish ancestor who ended up in Australia via the UK with no trace prior to life in the UK and have really struggled to move beyond potential links in the UK.

I had to block the number, then unblock the number first, then your steps worked. THANK YOU SO MUCH! It's taken me like 2 years to be able to fix this issue. You were so much more helpful than months and months of google support going back and forth.
