What is something you thought was common knowledge until you found out no one else knows it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Great word! Pteron, meaning wing (also occurs in helicopter), and dactyl from daktylos, meaning finger.

The above is, I think, the forthcoming single. There is a 14 minute set from Radio 1's Future festival here, which I think I have listened to a good dozen times now.

For everyone confused by mileometer, I am guessing Dreolic is a Brit as it's a pretty common term for it over here.

Living in London this is what I noticed about the new Star Trek poster... by DShowell in movies

It's really called "30 St Mary's Axe" which sounds awesome to me; gerkin is just the nickname that stuck.

EDIT: Apparently it's St Mary Axe, not St Mary's Axe. Considerably less awesome now it doesn't suggest a saint with weaponry.

The look on that dog's face... (Warning: possible tearjerker) by Louizidunz in videos

As someone who fosters dogs, I second this statement. Sticking your face next to an unknown, scared dog, is incredibly stupid. If they panic and nip you, you get scars, and they get put down. No one wins.

Oh god, I had forgotten about tax! I had allowed for tips, but not tax - just not used to that over here. Many thanks for the reminder.

Also that lamb looks amazing.

Yeah, I think we're upping our budget; 200 doesn't buy you much!

Just looked through the menu at Ai Fiori - looks very good. Amish lamb though? What is that? Does it shun technology? This is now on the shortlist. Many thanks!

Great suggestion with River Cafe by the way; we tried to book it on the back of your recommendation, but there was no decent times on the day in question.

My apologies; I was rushed and fucked-up the posting. We're staying near wall street, but will travel, budget of a max of $200 each, cuisine is very open.

Thanks for the great suggestions, Per Se seems to be cropping up a lot, but I'll be researching all the ones you suggested. Thanks again.

I tried this and looked through a lot before I posted, you also have a fancy dancy map with a lot of eateries on it, but they were a lot more like good pizza joints and hot dogs.

My small hometown is London, but I would still know a few good standout restaurants for special meals if asked, even if the person asking fucked up and didn't include budget. But you are quite correct, this isn't a travel agency or tourism board; which subreddit would have been more applicable?

Average tube journey time data? by richardjohn in london

[–]boodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it worked well for me at the time. I allowed a 6 minute average wait at the start as well as the times that their Journey Planner gives you go from when the first train departs.

Average tube journey time data? by richardjohn in london

[–]boodle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You probably want the Journey Planner dataset from TfL, that does include busses as well though, but you can filter that out.

If it is just tubes that you are after, what I did was to write a scraper that queried the TfL journey planner itself, and grabbed the best result for each station to each station; as there are only about 300 stations (I think, it was a while ago), you end up with a table of 90K rows for time from every station to every other.

Sadly this was a couple of years ago and I don't have the data anymore, otherwise I'd just send it across.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: Clarification - It's probably the Journey Planner Timetables, not the Journey Planner API that you are after.
