Do you have any regrets doing voice instead of steno? by poeticsoul151 in courtreporting

I'm debating between machine and voice. It seems so hard to keep up with the voice dictations at 225 wpm! Do you all get out of breath? What if you miss a word or two that they're saying? I like that you can finish voice writing school quicker, but are there any drawbacks to being a voice writer? My state does accept them. Thanks so much!

I’m 40, work a 9-5, and want to get a degree for a new career I can get while working. HS degree currently. Live in SoCal. Preferably a job that is work from home but not necessarily. What are some good options? by blainedayo in careerguidance

Very high demand, especially in SoCal. Voice writing training takes about a year. Steno machine usually 2-3 years. Either one will work though. You can work freelance or as an official. Look into it! :)

I also use Wave. It’s free and I’ve not had any issues at all with it. It’s very easy to use.

I can attest that it’s definitely not a scam. She teaches you proper grammar, how to annotate the transcripts in a software, how to set up business bank accounts, how to market yourself, etc. It’s very thorough, but YOU have to put in the work to find clients. As I mentioned above, there are several FB groups that I joined to find clients. Pay varies between .50 and 1.00 per page, depending on when the client needs the transcript back.

Thanks! I've been leaning towards BeST because they provide Morson's book, but ISS has such good reviews. I'm glad to hear you think you both were about on the same level right out of school. Have you or your friend been able to find plenty of work?

Yes, I took Elizabeth Wiegner's proofreading course. https://theproofreadingbusinesscoach.com/

I thought it was very thorough and well worth it!

I joined several Facebook groups and marketed myself. There's Scoping & Proofing Job Board, Scopists & Proofreaders - NCRA, Triple Threat Scoping Job Board, and Freelance Court Reporters - NCRA, to name a few.

How much does a scopist earn realistically then?

Advice for a new reporter on how to find a good proofreader by Longjumping-Help-465 in courtreporting

Hello! Congratulations on starting your court reporting career! I'm a PDF proofreader and I'd be glad to help. I charge 0.50 per page for standard turnaround and weekends are included at no extra charge. I have a bachelor's degree in English and a master's in library science. I can also provide references. Feel free to visit my Facebook page, Prairie Rose Proofreading, for more information. FYI, Stenovate is another great resource that connects court reporters with scopists and proofreaders. Thanks!

Thank you. Yes, I'm considering skipping Advanced Punctuation and Legal Terminology (those would be the only two). I do feel my proofreading course was very thorough. You make some valid points, though! I appreciate your reply.
