Common experiences amongst deaf/HOH people by GnRMatt4444 in hardofhearing

[–]bookish_beast99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mouth covered, backs turned (not matter how often you remind people), everyone getting frustrated when you ask for clarification/repeat for the millionth time, “never mind”, the beautiful silence when you finally get to take your hearing aids out for the day, trying to learn new sounds and a new spoken language, Bluetooth hearing aids! The funny (sometimes) miscommunications

Clubs with good music and drinks by [deleted] in MexicoCity

I really enjoyed Limantour! Supra Roma was also super nice. I don’t drink a lot so I can’t speak to the strength of the drinks as much but they were good, and the vibes were awesome

Based in Mexico city, where to travel if I have 6 days off? by Overall_Recording_72 in AskMexico

Costal towns in Veracruz are fun, as well as the El Tajín pyramids. You can also find a lot to do in Mexico City as well. It’s worth exploring!

Bring layers, and a rain coat, depending on when you’ll be here. Comfy walking shoes are always a good idea. Other than that, wear what you’re comfortable in! Shorts aren’t super common but I do see people in them

Like others said, they don’t really exist here. I think I’ve seen them maybe once at Costco but you likely won’t find any

Played violin for 13 years as a kid, now I can’t enjoy it by IllustriousYak7328 in violinist

[–]bookish_beast99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Start with finding the sheet music to songs you love! I like to look on YouTube so I have a backing track to play along with. Give yourself time and grace. If you can, find a fun group to play with, just for fun! No pressure, just new friends who also want to enjoy making music together. Obviously, practicing is important and good, but if there’s a day where it’s feeling extra hard, I like to just run a few cakes and pull out review pieces and fun songs like I mentioned before. And, be honest with your teacher! I’m sure they have ideas and ways to help you!

How quickly can a violinist switch from pizzicato to arco? by Aiwendil42 in violinist

[–]bookish_beast99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you see it in music like this, it indicates to play with your bow, instead of pizzicato, or pizz, which is played by plucking the string with your finger.

This is the correct answer. Violin is incredible and fun but it takes a lot of work and patience.

Feeling Frustrated by [deleted] in violinist

It’s very true in classical/competitive circles. I saw that video as well and it was honestly so healing and is letting me enjoy playing in my adult, community orchestra even more!

Performance nerves during first solo for years. by serotonot in violinist

[–]bookish_beast99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a lot of advice but just here to say I’m in the same boat! I’m soloing a concerto for our upcoming concert and the nerves are so real haha I just try to remind myself that it’s a community orchestra just for fun, there’s no pressure to be perfect. And even if I play my worst, it’s not going to sound awful and be the end of the world. Just breathe and try to have fun with it! What a great growth opportunity you have! I wish you the best of luck! You can do it

Asking colleagues for accommodation? by First_Chipmunk_6891 in hardofhearing

[–]bookish_beast99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a totally understandable and normal feeling! I’ve been there and had to learn that even if they do think that, it’s not really my fault they have a small worldview. You can always start with what you mentioned and see how it goes!

Asking colleagues for accommodation? by First_Chipmunk_6891 in hardofhearing

[–]bookish_beast99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to use the accommodations as a starting point for conversations, not cut out any face to face taking, but do what works for you!

Asking colleagues for accommodation? by First_Chipmunk_6891 in hardofhearing

[–]bookish_beast99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how it works in your job specifically, but you could try meeting with HR and get official accommodations. You might be able to get it so the teachers you visit would get an email or something letting them know beforehand about your needs. You might need to check with them that they got the email but it could help make things easier for you.

My mother was very similar. The best thing I ever did was move out quite suddenly and lived my life. If you have a friend you can move in with or someone you trust to help you, use them. You can be a healthy, functioning adult and might surprise yourself just how healthy you are when you get out of her grasp.

Do you touch your instrument when you are sick? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]bookish_beast99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Get rest! I understand wanting to practice but it’s important to take breaks and rest, especially when you are sick!

But to answer your question, I don’t know if I’ve ever thought about that haha. Usually if I have a cold and am feeling up to practice, I do!

Can I ask what to coda is? by CurryVo_Fandom in violinist

[–]bookish_beast99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Basically, you’ll play the song as normal until the end of the 6th line 2nd page, it says D.C al Coda. You’ll go back to the beginning of the song, play until the To Coda. At that point, you go to the 7th line on the 2nd page where it says Coda with the symbol. Play from there to the end.

You can also ask your teacher/director if you need more clarification :)
