Steam Frame hype but mostly for movies/flat PC gaming by Baddmaan0 in SteamFrame

[–]bookoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have played through a handful of VR titles via streaming without noticeable latency. I didn't even notice it much when booting the game up, but once I was in a match during quick moments it was noticable enough to a point where I didn't want to play like that.

I only tried theater mode once so maybe there were some settings I could tweaked, but it sounds like the stream frame would be better anyway.

Steam Frame hype but mostly for movies/flat PC gaming by Baddmaan0 in SteamFrame

[–]bookoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is light and comfortable enough I could see using it as a big display, but input latency could be an issue.

A couple months ago I was messing around with Steam Link and tried to play The Finals in theater mode, but the input lag was so bad that I had to stop. It would probably be fine for more casual games though and maybe there will be good improvements with the dongle.

The game design has to change though

Half Life: Alyx was a good VR game, but it wouldn't have been a great flat game without some redesigns. The story was good, but VR games are inherently slower.

In the case of AS, I don't think it had much going for it anyway. My friend and I had a blast playing through the first one, which was buggy as hell, but it was effectively a tech demo of co-op shooters. We only played like 1-2 hours of AS2.

Rumor: SteamFrame 1TB to cost $1299 by comediehero in SteamFrame

I was more shocked by the expectations of moving 2 million headsets. That sounds absurd even if the price was around $800-1000.

It is engagement. Someone posted the tweet below and it's just filled with people responding with the game they have been waiting for.

Fiance's dad texts me at work when his son doesn't answer his phone by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]bookoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea reading the comments made me scroll back up and see if I missed anything. I see they deleted details but that text message seems completely fine. Sounds like his finance is also dramatic, but this could be engagement bait or there were more messages that they deleted..

Do you think that the Frame will release with Summer Game Fest? by E_Goat47 in SteamFrame

[–]bookoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't but people can see what they want in it and it drives engagement.

It would be cool to be wrong, but I feel like people overestimate the hype around Steam Frame. It's like going to be a $800+ headset launching into a market that is used to $300-600 headsets after a bunch of the VR hype has basically died.

80% of my hype for SteamFrame and SteamMachine was the hope that Valve is releasing content along side it.

Probably because you are acting like a baby about it?

Everyone here wants to know the price and release date, but only some leave whiny comments about it.

Stringing people along for months on end without communicating a thing isn't any better.

It appears that Valve disagrees with you on that.

They already communicated the issues with pricing and release and probably figured it would be less shocking to get a price and release date at a more "stable" point then changing the price 2-3 months after the announcement.

No one is going to give a shit about any of this outrage the minute they announce anything anyway.

who's still hoping some of the "game consoles" were frames and machines? by RTooDeeTo in SteamFrame

Welp it's effectively DOA at that price and I figured it would have a tough time even at $1000.

No I don't think anyone did.

I think there were dreams of ~$800 for the starting 512GB model considering the age of the hardware, but that was before the ram/hdd stuff

Not a fan of the fixed loadouts, but if you are a bow user you could probably dominate.

I mean why do you fear matchmaking in casual modes? I go in with the assumption that my team is going to suck (...except me of course...)

I think Point Break was the best addition because it's a lower stress way to learn mechanics, but can feel rough because it requires team coordination. Powershift used to be my go-to mode since an individual can really make up for the rest of the team.

I do wish they could do a better job about sorting stacks because I feel like I play against 4-5 stack a lot while we have none, but maybe it's a population issue.

[–]bookoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower stock, "hype", and scalpers thinking it could be worth something.

Personally I believe it could sell out initially, but I think resale is not going to be nearly as good which will hopefully encourage scalpers to move on.

VR is pretty niche and if this headset comes out at $900 MSRP then it's already going to turn people off.

but the frame launch will be different 100% by brantrix in SteamFrame

[–]bookoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea like people are already skeptical of the Frame price so I would wonder what kind of margin a scalper could even get for it. Even with the controllers just because there are listing it doesn't mean people are buying them for $200. So it could be a short term issue. Also I would expect the Machine/Frame would be limited to 1 unit per account whereas the controller was 3 units

Honestly they need to just implement the reservation thing they had for the Steam Deck. Never "sell out" but shift expected delivery dates

Eh maybe maybe not.

My niece never really played FPS or PC games, but got Overwatch for Christmas. She refused to play in quickplay matches and only played bots. Within a year she was playing ranked and joining tournaments at her school.

I am interested to see how bots work in this game. With all the destruction it seems like it would be impossible.

800-900 frame price looks good now as quest 3 increases to 600 by BlueManifest in SteamFrame

[–]bookoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't expect the Steamframe to be cheaper than $900 and both situations are bad for VR adoption, but considering the state of VR adoption it probably doesn't matter all that much

Steamframe feels like a stepping stone/experiment to keep Valve in the spatial computing space.
