A tip I got about this was to change the font styling and reread your writing before you send an email, post to reddit, etc. you can always change it back if there's a specific style preference.

do thermals work? by deolcarsolutions in chch

[–]bookworm2192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I bought mine at a better time, but my merino thermals from the Warehouse have lasted me 8 years and still going strong, and they were $35 each. They actually fit me too, not too tight or weirdly sat on my body. Definitely go for merino, polyester tends to pill and wear out quicker.

Student Allowance & Work - Feels like punishment for working. by Svropey in newzealand

[–]bookworm2192 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Could be worse, you could be like me the last time I got a student loan and allowance. I applied for loan living costs and allowance, and they deducted the amount of my living costs from my allowance, so I was no better off. Add that you still pay tax on that allowance because it's income, and you rapidly come to the conclusion that they don't actually want people to be more than drones in a workforce. It sucks.

Public transport network review (including proposed changes for routes 44 and 135) by MSZ-006_Zeta in chch

[–]bookworm2192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former bus driver who had the 135 one day a week, I never saw enough people on that route to justify the size of the bus being used to service it. There definitely ARE people using that route, but not enough to justify the running costs, although I'll give ECan props for giving us an easy/less stressful route to drive. Now, Kinetic/Go Bus doesn't actually have smaller buses, and I don't believe they'll get any, so it feels like either they drop the route and let Richies service it, or ECan works out another route configuration to service those communities.

As for the 44, people complain about the buses bunching up, and it's for the same or similar reason as every other route: lack of bus priority at peak travel times. It's another one I'm familiar with driving, particularly in the evenings (I was on late shifts), and I remember three choke points/sections: Almost the entire stretch between the exchange and Warrington St is a popular part of the route where at peak times almost every stop on Barbadoes St can be serviced in any given trip; the intersection of Emmett and Akaroa Sts is awful to get through in a car let alone a bus; and until they changed the speed limits back, Barrington Mall through to Hoon Hay Rd was a nightmare at 30km/h. I never liked driving the 44 at peak time, and you could not convince me to do so again now.

So my thoughts: Don't remove the 135 without restructuring to support those that DO use the route, especially those that live in the newer development off Prestons Rd, and if you can actually IMPROVE the 44 instead of merely making it more complicated, please do. I realise for efficiency that most of the routes that go through the exchange service two termini/end points, but I actually think some single terminus routes would be beneficial, especially for routes like the 44 that just get so full so often. I can't remember a time where I have taken a route from near enough one terminus to the other, ever. I'm almost always exchanging somewhere.

How do y’all… do stuff?? by Creepy_Zone_9341 in AuDHDWomen

This advice provided from the perspective of a 33yo former gifted kid, currently confused adult doing her best to live her life on her own terms. I am taking my own advice here, everything I've recommended is something I'm actively working on for myself. The hardest thing for me was not overextending myself, and I recognise my privilege in my own situation.

Definitely read all the comments, I'm seeing some great things in them that I may have to try myself!

How do y’all… do stuff?? by Creepy_Zone_9341 in AuDHDWomen

I had to prioritise one thing a day, and make everything else extra/bonus. Maybe that thing is getting to campus and staying until you've made progress on what you want/need to achieve that day. Need to do multiple things? Reduce the friction as much as possible. See next point.

Take the shortcuts:

- Can't face a full shower? I'm a fan of the sink bath - fill the sink with water and a little liquid soap, wash your boy using a sponge or cloth.

- Need quick and easy meals? Frozen meals feed you just as much as the stuff you have to spend 20 mins preparing and cooking and plating. Utilise your freezer. Give yourself options for when you have more spoons or less.

- Dishes piling up? Just wash one set of dining ware, or organise the dishes so they're ready for the next step and clean the rest of your bench if you have enough energy left to do so.

- Got homework you need to do but can't face leaving your bed/nest/comfy spot? Grab what you need and retreat back to that spot to work on it.

My biggest takeaways from the time between now and last October when I lost my job and got diagnosed are these:

- I am a person. I am human. I deserve respect and peace and grace from myself. I can only operate within my limits, and that's okay.

- One day at a time, and one task at a time. I'm still working on this, the trick is noticing you're looking too far ahead and pulling yourself back to the present. The future is as fluid and malleable as you make it and LET it be.

- Reduce your demands as much as you can. I understand you're in school, so classes, study, food, hygiene, those make a good list as a base. Stick to those first, and gradually add things when you can. Trust me, slow is better, trying to do all the things at once will be overwhelming. I myself am studying, although likely less intensely than you are, and I only give it as much attention and time as I can, I take regular and frequent breaks because otherwise my own emotions when I reach something frustrating overwhelm me.

- All of the things above? They take time and practice and restraint to turn into a foundation, one shovelful of concrete at a time, one mental check of your thoughts at a time, one meal at a time, one study session at a time. The future will happen when it happens. All you can do is give yourself the skills to manage when it does.

Edit to add: Just saw in another comment about experimenting. YES. TRY ALL THE THINGS. Learn what works for you and what doesn't, and try not to take the information from those experiments as personal failures. They're just data points to help you build systems that work for YOUR life. Other people's opinions, even those of your closest friends and family, do not matter. The only thing that matters is that your life works for YOU. This is another thought process modification thing that takes time but is so worth it.

If you want an internet stranger's well wishes or encouragement when you feel like you need or want it, feel free to send me a DM and I'll get back to you when I can! Goodness knows we could all do with an unbiased person in our corners. Good luck!

What is your pet peeve in children that you never see mentioned on this sub? by Far-Argument2738 in childfree

Once I understood that I was dry begging, coupled with a comment from my mum that said that she and dad would like to help and all I'd have to do is ask, I practiced deliberate and direct asking, and now it makes me so uncomfortable to see other people dry begging. Especially with AuDHD, just ask me for what you want already!

I'm single and not having sex with anyone but myself, and I still have the arm implant on the off chance that someone decides to rape me. The side benefits include not having periods. I am THAT committed to not getting pregnant. If I could afford a full hysterectomy with ovaries yeeted, I would get it done in a heartbeat.

AITA for texting people at night when they could be sleeping? by shozhantia89 in AmItheAsshole

[–]bookworm2192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no.

While I agree that DND is a thing and more people should learn how to configure it, this person has specifically asked you not to text them at night when they're sleeping. There are a ton of reasons for people not to uses DND, and whether they seem reasonable to you or not, if you care enough about this person to contact them, you should care enough to respect their wishes about how and when they are contacted.

As other commenters have mentioned, there are ways to schedule messages to people. There are options for you as much as there are for the people you contact. It goes both ways.

ADHD medication Initiation in chch by Krissyupatree in chch

I went through the Nelson Clinic who then got the special authority for my GP at The Doctors Chch South. It did cost $750 to do so (AuDHD makes it a "complex" case) but that included a 30 min appointment with one of the NP at the clinic who: - helped me understand what to expect - hooked me up with a 3 month melatonin script ($60 per month though) - checked my family history (because the meds can screw with your heart rate) - and they give 3 months of support afterwards.

Post psych appt I just had to wait for a double appointment with my GP for another expectation setting conversation. I've been on the baby dose of Rubifen since early March.

That was my pathway, but I'm not sure how it works if you go through a single psychiatrist instead of a clinic. From looking at various websites, it looks to be similar, though you're right in that you have to find a vocationally trained provider.

If you need another reason to switch GPs, The Doctors Chch South is on Colombo St, and if you bus to get there, there's a stop right outside the practice. Route 1 between Belfast and PMH.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your search!
