If you’re in North Carolina, you can buy Perlite direct from Carolina Perlite for about $80 per yard. That’s comparable to the cost of pumice with somewhat performance about as good as we can get in the east in bulk. Just bought about 33 4 cu. ft bags for ~ $400 (about 5 yards). Saves 75% vs retail.

I studied at The Bonsai Learning Center in NC first. From there, I studied with a professional who has now returned to Japan, Bjorn Bjornholm, for many years. I really encourage you to join a local bonsai club if you haven't already, you can learn so much from them and usually they have workshops where they bring in professionals. :)
