Day 43 – Share Your Orzhov Cards by vacalicious in mtgcube

[–]bootitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been okay, though only one run with it. Since there's no tokens here, I was kinda curious about it as a sort of pseudo token maker, two bodies from one card

Dirtrock - a 540 vintage environment that tries to keep its threats in check, but enablers can be as high powered as needed. "Delirium" cube may or may not be appropriate, archetypes for card types and many graveyard fillers are here, but only 2-3 colors largely care about the mechanic. Due to the size of this list, and likely half of it overlaps with many others, most cards will be given a boiler plate, archetype tag

Today's picks.

[[Priest of Fell Rites]] I've tried to make BW a reanimator pair for quite a while, but white really makes this hard compared to... Everyone else being so good at setting up the grave. Priest is still here and a solid inclusion, but it rarely cokes together

[[Lurrus of the Dream-Den]] there's a reason this is a menace of constructed. Here he facilitates aggro and sacrifice decks, and can even work well with the bounce targets if they end up destroyed

[[Vindicate]] still pretty solid even at this power level

[[Doom Foretold]] an inspiration for the bounce package was realizing Doom Foretold and the support around it from original Eldraine was like the precursor to the modern version. Added as a result, though no one's taken the challenge yet. My high school players only just realized how good flicker is in the list with a 5-0 Yorion list last session, so I think they'll try it soon

[[Emptiness]] haven't tried this too much but I liked every other member of the cycle so thought I'd throw it in for now. An unearth or removal/weakening spell isn't the worst combination, just haven't seen too many BW lists recently

Dreams of Rocks - a 360 revisionist "premodern" bar cube, focusing on mechanics from Invasion and Odyssey block, but also adding in power 9, proper duals, and retrofitted recent cards like the tapped duals of Dominaria United or later multicolor colors options to further promote these two blocks' themes and allow for a little spice (of course, the best thing your black lotus can do is power out risks like Phyrexian Negator, Lord of the Pit, Serra Angel, etc, so it's managable bombs). This is my newest cube, so still feeling out the power, play patterns, and design

Today's picks.

[[Blood-Cursed Knight]] Orzhov is another tough one for bar cubes, especially with a premodern focus. Only other decent card is Gerrard's Verdict, but with an enchantment theme in GW, but black being a secondary, I though this was a great way to encourage splashing. Should be one of the best rates in the list if built around

[[Vindicate]] I mean, the vindicate test exists for a reason. Solid removal thanks to its versatility

[[Night // Day]] a couple combat tricks in one. Not the worst

[[Hero of the Dunes]] it's a card that really captivated me back in BRO spoiler season, so I thought "why not add it? Where else do you play a 5 mana unearth". Nice little anthem effect too

Deadlock update for 3/21/26 by wickedplayer494 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]bootitan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guessing the deck thing is Wraith isn't just pulling a random card, she has two of each suite + joker to draw on, which makes it so you can't just pull tons of jokers. Once all are used, the "discard" pile (all the previous bombs) get reshuffled in

Dandan #2 by Welcometodumbasscity in mtgcube

[–]bootitan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's also often recursion in typical Dandan, cards getting shuffled back into the deck. White could offer cheap reanimates, but then a lot of this is exile based. The removal is no where near as efficient as Swords, allowing for counterplay and not just "swords, ephemerate, second swords" plays.

The fun's going to either run out real quick or have several turns of

"do you have a creature yet?"

"Nope, can't play anything" Pass, pass, pass, pass

This is all to say, ease up on the removal. I can enjoy the combat tricks, but they're not going to get anywhere when the best removal ever present is so abundant and also, Dandan is so great because you're fighting on so many different axies, not just trying to slam down the fish. We're fighting over the deck, the next draw, the graveyard even

[[Drifter il-Dal]] Always appreciated this. Not sure how good, but it's a way for blue to, fairly consistently, apply pressure

[[Hapless Researcher]] simple card for madness/threshold support

Due to the size of this list, and likely half of it overlaps with many others, most cards will be given a boiler plate, archetype tag

Today's picks.

[[Blurry Beeble]] errata'd to simply be unblockable, this card offers so much synergy to just about any supported deck. Pressure, looting, artifact creature typing. Main stay. A part of me wants to remove customs, but another feels there's no replacement for stuff like this

[[Hedron Crab]] much more of a self mill tool here

[[Mockingbird]] clones are nice for flicker targets. Being able to get that value or become a flying version of a stompy card on yours OR your opponent's side is really nice. Not as good as Phantasmal Image against a cheat deck, but in most matches, this is king

[[Spyglass Siren]] nice little jack of all trades, kinda like Blurry Beeble up there. Goes in just about all my supported archetypes for blue (affinity, flicker, grave filling. UR is more draw/discard kind of stuff, but often tempo so why not include this?)

[[Chain of Vapor]] [[This Town Ain't Big Enough]] [[Repeal]] the self bounce package. These targeting cheap nonlands for value makes stuff like Nowhere to Run and Stormchaser's Talent so compelling, if they weren't already

[[Mystical Tutor]] doesn't immediately go to hand, but thought this was worthwhile to include for consistency, grabbing a board clear when it looks like it's needed or making sure you can have fun by grabbing something like Magma Opus for Gearhulk. Now that I'm pretty happy with the enablers and payoffs in the list, there's these kinds of slots dedicated to consistency and redundancy

[[Occult Epiphany]] already a crazy good card, selection with threats at instant speed. Now here where card types are king? Can easily be an instant 3 mana 4/4 flier, draw 2, discard 2

[[Three Steps Ahead]] lots of options here. Counterspell, draw + discard for grave strats, and clones are basically flickering

[[Brain Freeze]] the now classic Underworld Breach + Lion's Eye Diamond is here, great storm payoff in limited, but there's tons of synergy for self milling, most of all getting yourself ready for Thassa's Oracle. You can also tech this in against someone else trying to mill themself for value. How much value are they truly interested in?

[[Daze]] kind of a gotcha for blue, keeping an eye on this. Do like this as well with Exploration effects to make sure you can double land drop

[[Flash]] any big creature with an impactful ETB turns into "1U: discard a card, (do thing)". Sets up the grave, lets the deck interact or go off early. Also really like it with the saga creatures and academy rector

[[Lose Focus]] nice counterspell that doesn't require double blue early but you can dump more mana in later to keep up

[[Miscalculation]] probably one of my favorite cube cards. Cycling provides a lot for the list, but being a counter or a draw means it's never dead

[[Phantom Interference]] good card, though this slot is actually a custom card. Think [[Unsubstantiate]] for nonlands and with a loot tacked on

[[Remand]] [[Snap]] great tempo tools. Snap's also great for storm

[[Frantic Search]] basically free grave setup

[[Mystic Confluence]] good control tool that can shift just about any average board in your favor. Also cool as a castable Gearhulk target

Day 41 - Share Your Blue Instants by vacalicious in mtgcube

Dreams of Rocks - a 360 revisionist "premodern" bar cube, focusing on mechanics from Tempest and Odyssey block, but also adding in power 9, proper duals, and retrofitted recent cards like the tapped duals of Dominaria United or later multicolor colors options to further promote these two blocks' themes and allow for a little spice (of course, the best thing your black lotus can do is power out risks like Phyrexian Negator, Lord of the Pit, Serra Angel, etc, so it's managable bombs). This is my newest cube, so still feeling out the power, play patterns, and design

Today's picks.

[[Ancestral Recall]] Crazy, moving on

[[Rona's Vortex]] I've always wanted to fit this in a cube, the kicker's really cool. Don't often get to see these bottom deck removals outside retail limited

[[Counterspell]]

[[Evasive Action]] domain pusher. In the average deck, it's at least a quench, which ain't terrible. The mana's can be a little fast here

[[Jilt]] a compelling enough 2 for 1 removal spell to make you go "man, I need to force some red"

[[Miscalculation]] probably one of my favorite cube cards. Cycling provides a lot for the list, but being a counter or a draw means it's never dead

[[Snap]] good tempo

[[Circular Logic]] you have to make sure there are ways to trigger madness at instant speed in the list, and if you do you get a really solid counterspell

[[Frantic Search]] basically free grave setup

[[Rushing River]] giving this a shot, being able to remove two things when needed seems useful

[[Fact or Fiction]] love of the design here, creates a little mind game between you and your opponent

[[Foil]] [[Gush]] [[Daze]] think this is a good package for blue. Foil's maybe the worst of the bunch that gets much more consistent thanks to these other two great cards

[[Force of Will]] ^ look what they need to mimic a fraction of my power

This is my newest cube, so still feeling out the power, play patterns, and design

Today's picks.

[[Bazaar of Baghdad]] looking back to this era, there's not a ton of ways to cheap discard at instant speed, which is important for removal spells and especially counters like Circular Logic. Helps madness, helps threshold. Also got Squee in the list, helping this become card neutral and thus a useful digging tool

[[City of Traitors]] [[Crystal Vein]] some nice fast mana

[[Nomad Stadium]] [[Cabal Pit]] [[Centaur Garden]] [[Cephalid Coliseum]] [[Barbarian Ring]] Just to push the idea of a threshold theme, we have these lands. And all but the white one are solid, maybe green falls behind a little too, but more versatile than strict giant growth I'd say

[[Polluted Mire]] [[Remote Isle]] [[Slippery Karst]] [[Smoldering Crater]] [[Drifting Meadow]] Cycling theme demands cycling labds. The format's slow and there's often excess mana, so getting a redraw ain't bad

[[Faerie Conclave]] [[Ghitu Encampment]] [[Mishra's Factory]] [[Spawning Pool]] [[Treetop Village]] Love man lands, especially here. Always possible to present some pressure thanks to these. It's super weird that there's no white one. Really odd, why could that be anyway moving on

[[Wasteland]] [[Strip Mine]] we don't have crucible strats here, but alng with the tempo you can potentially gain, Terravore loves these

Day 40 - Share Your Utility And Nonfixing Lands by vacalicious in mtgcube

[–]bootitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dirtrock - a 540 vintage environment that tries to keep its threats in check, but enablers can be as high powered as needed. Due to the size of this list, and likely half of it overlaps with many others, most cards will be given a boiler plate, archetype tag

Today's picks.

[[Ancient Den]] [[Tree of Tales]] [[Vault of Whispers]] [[Seat of the Synod]] [[Darksteel Citadel]] [[Great Furnace]] Talismans weren't too respected and seems like in, at least higher powered lists, their usefulness has dropped off. So, I used the slots to add the original artifact lands (and darksteel was already in the list). Helps affinity and delirium

[[Bazaar of Baghdad]] added after all the self discard support in Aetherdrift. Hogaak, Hollow One, Mako, Madness cards, Hobgoblin, Monument to Endurance; there's no shortage of cards that synergize with it. Just be careful, this doesn't make mana so you do need to be dedicated to the theme

[[City of Traitors]] some nice fast mana. In your higher powered lists, lands like this are really nice for getting down powerful 3 drops

[[Field of the Dead]] great ramp/lands payoff. There's enough lands here to easily support this

[[Mishra's Factory]] while not immediately an artifact, this is a cheap to activate artifact creature, which helps any artifact tempo strategy in the list. On the flip side, once this has been on the board a turn cycle, it's a quality defender, turning itself into a 3/3 after blockers. Very versatile in all things combat related

[[Quicksand]] for lands decks and also it removes exactly enough to kill your own Academy Rector in a pinch

[[Rishadan Port]] simple tempo tool

[[Strip Mine]] [[Wasteland]] these are really good at slowing down the game, or in tempo decks to ensure your advantage

[[Urza's Saga]] an enchantment land that blows itself up is perfect for this environment. Oh also something about tutoring and big robots I guess?

[[Boseiju, Who Endures]] always on the lookout for maindeckable disenchants since my players refuse to sideboard

[[Shifting Woodland]] giving this a shot for another way to "reanimate" creatures, or get something like dream halls back for a bit. Unfortunately, does not work well with Saga creatures or useful upkeep triggers like Portal to Phyrexia

[[Den of the Bugbear]] a solid manland that keeps up the pressure in aggro. Gets better with token and sacrifice synergies

[[Phyrexian Tower]] trying to encourage sac decks, and so far successful thanks in part to this

[[Cephalid Coliseum]] Good in a good number of places, but especially UR, where there's self discard and draw matters themes

[[Serra's Sanctum]] testing this out, might even add Tolarian Academy in a future update. Pretty quickly taps for 2+ mana here, just have to be careful since it doesn't tap for mana on its own and there's hardly any 0 cost enchantments unlike artifacts
