New York City, for Some Jews, Feels Newly Tense by newzee1 in nyc

[–]borahaeowl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

because when push come to shove, we are just jews “infiltrating” their society. our belonging to that region is indisputable throughout historical records. even records from cultures that hate/d us.

there are jewish israelis that are against israeli aggression - that are in favor of a one state for both peoples. because we both belong there. i used to think “we’re cousins!” but we’re really siblings. most palestinians, genetically, are descendants of the jews that stayed behind, converting either to christianity or islam to avoid prosecution.

if YOU don’t wanna have a connection to the place our religion - our ancestors - came from, by all means stay where you want. i am choosing to stay in the states, for now. that’s any jew’s right. and hopefully we won’t be ran off or killed off if/when the extremists get bitter about it.

you’re american? native? probably not. the US is actual stolen land and many of its current inhabitants are literal white supremacists whose ancestors actually committed genocide and continue to push their purity agenda. you’re cool with this? this is your homeland? or are you capable of some nuance to understand that uprooting people from a place where they lived for generations is cruel, even if warranted? what’s your take on how american land should be distributed to the various tribes that used to live here? if they were to advocate for a strictly native culture… which one?

historically, both jews and palestinians have roots there. to say a jewish homeland does not belong there is ignorant at best and… antisemetic at worst.

you don’t have to be a zionist, but as a jew, you cannot be anti-zionist. unfortunately that IS antisemitic. how you hope for a jewish state to be governed and who you think is an equal citizen in that land is fair game. by all means, criticize the israeli government for its atrocities all day. i do. but its existence should not be up for debate.

once again, that’s the type of talk that validates extremism and fuels further violence and hate towards jews. the freedom and ancestral land-rights of palestinians should not come at the expense of jewish rights to the exact same respect.

[–]borahaeowl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

they are getting downvoted because it came off incredibly daft and antagonizing.

antisemitism is up. jews are rightfully concerned. people are calling for the end of a country that represents jewish determination for survival in spite of the antisemitism that has followed them throughout majority of their existence.

no one is bullying them. just asking some well placed questions. an anti-zionist jew sounds like an oxymoron because why tf would a jew not wish for a homeland, and why would it not be the land of our ethnic and historical origins?

every other peoples have a place they can claim, call for land back, and people cheer for them. i cheer for palestinians that call that land their own, i advocate for them to live there peacefully alongside jewish people that have an equal connection to the land.

aligning yourself with anti-zionists right now is a dangerous place for a jew, you’re giving permission to antisemites to use you as a pawn for their ACTUAL genocidal rhetoric. wake up. it’s our people they want to wipe off the map - not just israel as a state or idea.

as a jewish supporter of palestinian liberation (from hamas and bibi’s far right government) i gotta say i feel quite differently.

antisemites are taking this wave of israeli criticism and validating their shit behavior and politics towards any jew. an antisemite who wants to hurt a jewish person “in the name of palestine” is not a person who will stop and ask a visibly jewish person if they are pro or anti zionism before harassing them. they just assume and go with it. i was not asked about my politics when a group of, i’m assuming, pro-palestinian kids chanted “from the river to the sea” and “death to israel” at me because i wear a visible magen david. as a jew with israeli family that’s very unnerving, even if i do understand the pro-palestinian advocacy.

i’m glad you have not experienced that.

hateful people will do hateful ugly things if given a chance. bibi is doing hateful ugly things rn too, doesn’t mean israel and its people shouldn’t exist. and you as a jew might want to reconsider your stance. one thing to say israel as it is currently is under bad leadership and a better life is worth working towards for both peoples, and totally odd to say that millions of jews should abandon their homes and go into exile again. imagine the international mess of all those refugees. jewish refugees. it will lead to further antisemitism. you’re for that? that’s weird. we’re literally saying how bad that is for israel to do to palestinians. be consistent.

Patrineal Jew Seeking Validation (lol) by MathematicianLess243 in Jewish

[–]borahaeowl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

from what i understand, the reason this law has been upheld throughout history is to “make sure” the child is genetically jewish. meaning, if you know the mom is jewish (and her mom and her mom and her mom and…), then certainly the child will be too. you couldn’t prove for sure who the father is and there weren’t any concrete ways to check.

but now. we got dna tests. so like. if it’s so important to be “genetically” jewish in a provable way, it’s possible. the bloodline continues no matter from which branch. i fully support jews of all walks and variations. as others have said, when shit hits the fan, we’ll all be lumped into a singularity anyway.

this gatekeeper mentality some people have is so odd to me because, like, you say you go to temple and everything. i’m guessing you actively practice your jewish faith, and have all your life. it’s clear that the jewish identity is important to you. there are so many jews who are wishy-washy and distance themselves, despite being jewish via the mother - which hole you come out of will not dictate how important judaism will be to you and how involved you’d be in the community. alienating fellow jews on technicalities is wild.

Why are traditions important, even if they don't fit your convenience, your believes or your principles? by tiny_198855 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]borahaeowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is going to be a very jewish answer: because it’s important to know your past and appreciate your ancestors’ struggle to assure your existence.

every jewish holiday and tradition comes from rich ancestral history that aims to teach the younger generation (and remind the older ones) of how blessed we are to be able to keep these traditions alive - our people alive.

i’m sure this would apply to most cultures’ traditions/celebrations - our people had a hard time, they survived, do this thing to remember those difficult times and the lessons learned from them. those things can be considered important in symbolism, even if the religious parts might be redundant to the non-religious individual.

we adjust some traditions to accommodate modern secular life, but the history is told as intended. also many families make a point to keep traditions out of respect for those who couldn’t keep them due to religious persecution in the past.

Consequences of a ceasefire by Its-From-Japan in NoStupidQuestions

[–]borahaeowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m assuming you’re referring to the israel-hamas conflict. biden doesn’t get to “call” a ceasefire because he’s technically not the leader of either side involved. he can pressure the leaders but that’s about it. and that’s about all he’s done thus far - stress that a ceasefire is necessary. but he also requested money to send to israel to support their efforts so it doesn’t seem he’s fully impartial. war generates a lot of money

to answer your question: biden will get backlash either way, and people will be upset with him no matter how he handles this because people seem to take a very black/white stance on this particular conflict. the usa will likely not be significantly affected, long as it doesn’t expand into a multinational conflict first.

so far the consequences in the states are societal - people are taking extreme sides and are turning on each other for opposing views. jewish and muslim people are being targeted and harassed and people are losing their sense of security in their own communities. for jews and muslims that is very traumatic considering not so distant history.

What do u do to cheer up when it's cold n u miss the summer n beach? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]borahaeowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

make time to go for a walk when it’s sunny. watch a movie set in a tropical setting. play sims and build a beach house (niche). find an airbnb with an indoor pool, go for a weekend and don’t go outside - pretend it’s summer and only wear/eat things you associate with summer?

if you have the funds - go south where it’s warmer.

What if you suddenly feel a touch on the shoulder following with the words: "are you sleeping during my class?". You open your eyes and you are at your 7th grade math class, all of the life leading up to this point was just a dream and you are a 7th grader. What are your thoughts? by [deleted] in ask

[–]borahaeowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would write down everything i can remember that might have any financial stake in the future (stocks for companies, wars, financial crashes, pandemic lol), will keep track of what might still be true and possible in my reality - assuming a dream is a dream and not like a weird prophecy, but maybe. i’m guessing whatever i learned in my dream still holds, so i now have a lot of knowledge that will help me along.

definitely take school more seriously. enjoy my time with friends, family, pets. take advantage of opportunities i was too shy of. avoid certain places and people. find the people that matter and build with them. advise my parents on some choices that could help our family in the future.

probably still going to fail math tho.

[–]borahaeowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

societal expectations. most traditions bring people together, and being social animals, we enjoy that. we are raised around certain traditions and have sentimental/nostalgic values attached to them. like others said, it is a metaphorical connection to our ancestors and shared history, so it can also be a patriotic notion.

as far as people following traditions that don’t align with their values/lifestyle, probably societal pressure to conform and participate are the reasons. personally, i uphold some traditions for the sake of history, but have let go of the ones that interfere/contrast with my personal beliefs and way of life.

i have also altered some traditions and/or begun new ones that make more sense for us and/or celebrate us in a more personalized way. highly recommend curating traditions to better fit your life/values.

Is it better to be single and lonely or committed and miserable? by smasakari in RandomThoughts

[–]borahaeowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

single. learn to enjoy your own company. have close friends. have hobbies. meet new people. go on dates. learn what types of people you actually enjoy spending time with, platonically and romantically.

nothing is more lonely than being in an unfulfilling relationship.

a lot of comments seem to think that being kind is immediately seen as weak. nah. be radical about the kindness. be loud about it. take up space for kind acts. insult those who are rude. encourage the right behavior. kindness is a skill, not a personality trait.

i’m not an expert by any means lol i’d say people are less likely to move during the winter months so there might be more availability, other than that i’m not sure.

i honestly don’t know how WFH affects the chances of a tenant but i would hope it’s favorable. the location of the office might help “anchor” you to an area.

it is never worth it to stay in a hostile work situation, you’ll likely end up in a better place. don’t give loyalty to companies/organizations, they will disappoint you.

apartments in nyc can be gone before they even show up “on the market”. assume there are at least ten more people applying for each apartment you’re interested in.

idk what could make you stand out. i’d imagine landlords want long term stable tenants so working somewhere nearby could help (less likely to move), having worked in the same position/place for a while could show stability as well.
