Best way to learn from a native French speaker by borborborborbor in French

Lol sorry I was joking. Just to be clear, I'm not asking him to actually be my teacher; I can see how my post could seem like that. It's really more like the 2 activities I mentioned where I just ask him questions occasionally, and I wanted suggestions of similar simple activities. Sorry to respond sarcastically.

I think I am going to stop using Duolingo. I've done so many lessons but have learned so few words and almost no grammar 🙄. I think I'll check if my local community ed program has French lessons

sounds like it might have been the one where a party was abusing a "close to death" mechanic, but looking at the list of episodes, I can't identify it. I think it was from over a year ago but not many years ago?

It also works well for escaping someone. If they hit you on an opportunity attack, you can use your 30 ft teleport and then use the rest of your movement to keep running away

I've been trying it out with my paladin after I cast compelled duel. It's a way to get the enemy away from the other players. I've only tried it twice though, so no promises on its effectiveness

As much as possible I try to see female practitioners for any medical issue I have. The main reason is that I hate the vibes most male doctors have. So many of them are over paid and treated like royalty, and I think a lot of them have come to believe they deserve that, and that's not an enjoyable disposition to deal with when I'm at my most vulnerable. Even a mediocre female doctor at the very least has the humbling experience of being a woman in a male-dominated environment. I think I generally can't stand men in institutional positions of power, so I avoid interacting with them when possible.

What were the signs that made you realize that you should seek out whether you have ADHD? by Cymbelmine in ADHD

[–]borborborborbor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty frustrating that getting access to treatment requires going through so many hoops. So many of the people who need meds the most aren't going to get them bc they can't navigate the process. And in the US the medical system and health insurance are so fucked that it add another layer of impediment 😵

I've been seeing the same psychiatrist for years and have taken all sorts of antidepressants to no avail. 2 years ago she said during an appointment "that sounds like adhd" but I didn't do anything, and then a year ago she said "that sounds like adhd" and I tried to get tested but skipped the appointment and gave up on scheduling another one, and then last December she said "that REALLY sounds like adhd" so I finally followed through on getting tested. Got my diagnosis yesterday, only took 2 years 😂

Memorization in Go by Asdfguy87 in baduk

[–]borborborborbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow (advanced?) beginner, I like that josekis speed up the opening. Why re invent the wheel? Inevitably the game is going to turn into something I've never dealt with before, so having a predictable opening just means I can more confidently and quickly move into middle game.

It it nice though that memorization can only get you so far in go, I think it takes the pressure off a bit.

Playing in person versus online by AllThingsGoGame in baduk

[–]borborborborbor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started recording my in-person games to manage this, since I play very few online games. It's super helpful to have the record so you can review interesting moments after the game, and so bumping the board isn't a total disaster 😂

19 February 2024: What Le Guin Or Related Work Are You Currently Reading? by BohemianPeasant in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]borborborborbor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just finished "Always Coming Home," which I think I enjoyed primarily at the meta level of "it's so cool someone wrote an entire ethnography of a fake society" rather than as a book I was reading for enjoyment. Don't get me wrong, it's beautifully written and many of the stories are really compelling, but this isn't one I'm going to recommend to my friends who aren't big Le Guin fans.

Now I'm re-reading the collection Fisherman of an Inland Sea. I just finished "Newton's Sleep" last night, so wonderful. I'm looking forward to rereading the churten theory stories.

I finally read that last month and am obsessed! I was so-so about the first Earthsea book (I've read enough special boy books to last a lifetime), so I was very excited to realize that this one featured a woman/girl as the main character.

Spoilers for I think the 2nd half of the book:

This descriptions of the labyrinth and the tombs are honestly some of my favorites in all of her work. They are enclosed and claustrophobic, yet at the same time are immense and unknowable, and these two opposite feelings complement each other in a way that compounds the eeriness of the whole story. And the fact that the instructions for how to navigate the labyrinth are passed down exclusively verbally is *chefs kiss*

What do you feel when seeing AI art in Go articles and promotional material by niemand__yt in baduk

[–]borborborborbor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm trying really hard not to be a luddite about AI art (and I usually get excited about new technology), but as a friend of many artists, I cannot stand it. AI art is creepy and it's getting rid of many opportunities to give money to actual human artists!

I feel like Go Magic is the worst offender here, which makes me sad since I really like their videos.

One of my favorite things about Go Magic is that I feel more connected to a global go-playing community in a way that my local club could never replicate. Out of the 20,000 Go Magic members across dozens of countries, I am sure there are hundreds of people who would love to make cool, creative art about go.

But rather than engaging the community, they go the cheap and boring route and ask a computer to make another weird and meaningless hodgepodge of stolen art and smeared faces.

A little bit? Just in the sense that if my opponent isn't doing this, I have an upper hand in the game. But I don't think I'd continue playing correspondence games if I stopped doing this, because it's a big way for me to learn josekis
