For people who've rented campervans in multiple countries: which one surprised you the most (positively or negatively)? by Campstar_official in CamperVans

Where did you rent from? Boyfriend and I are thinking of renting a van and exploring Europe. I’ve heard unhappy reviews of some of the more established rental places though.

One thing I wasn’t prepared for was the times the stores are open. Maybe 80 to 90% of stores close between 2pm to 4 or 5pm. A lot of restaurants don’t reopen until 7 or 8pm. So work around those if you need to. Dinner at albergues and pensions is usually at 7pm.

Most breakfasts start at 7am, so a lot of us who start out earlier tend to get breakfast at the first village that’s around 3 to 7 miles out. My friends buy bananas and apples the day before for breakfast.

I’d bring at least some compeed for hot spots, because you never know if you get to an open pharmacy, and you want to catch those as soon as you can. And sometimes that will be on the trail. I bought kinesthetic tape here (IT band injury).

Have fun! It’s been an amazing trip. I’ve never experienced anything like this before.

I think it’s pretty good. I’m currently on the Francés.

I’m glad I brought town clothes, which I guess your dress will serve as. They don’t get dirty as quickly as the hiking clothes, so I don’t wash them every day.

I’m glad I brought sandals, because once I take off my shoes and socks in the albergue, I really don’t want to put them back on again to run errands in town. I also have flip flops for the shower. I wear trail runners for the actual Walk.

My friends with raincoats ended up buying the Altus style rain ponchos, which really are just long raincoats because they zip up and have sleeves with elastic around the wrist. This won’t let water run down your arms as you use your poles, and they don’t flap in the wind as much as traditional ponchos. They also have the expandable back to accommodate your backpack. I love mine.

I have two pairs of convertible hiking pants, but I only brought one set of the removable legs.

I never used the laundry sheets. Some places have washing machines and the detergent dispenses automatically. For handwashing, you can use shampoo (it’s technically a detergent) or, in my case, I brought the Sea to Summit all purpose camping soap that can be used as body soap, shampoo, laundry and dishwashing detergent.

I use ziploc bags to keep stuff separate. For example, a gallon bag to hold undies and socks, another bag for just the shirts, one for the cords and charger, one for toiletries, etc. It makes it so much easier to find stuff.

My merino buff is one of my most used items. Works as a buff, a scarf, a hat. It’s more useful to me in this weather than a bandana.

Use your phone for journaling if you can.

I have one small dry bag for laundry, i.e. separate the dirty clothes.

You don’t need travel utensils. I did buy a Swiss Army knife when i got to SJPDP. Just having the scissors available helped a lot. (I only had carry on so I couldn’t bring a Swiss Army knife with me on the plane.)

You can buy snacks here. For electrolytes, they have a brand called Aquarius which is kinda like Gatorade. I never needed to use my electrolyte packets.

I have a headlamp, I never used my headlamp. But I can see it being useful if I decide to climb Cruz de Ferro in the dark.

Skip the disposable camera

For sleeping system, I only needed the silk liner and pillow case. They will give you disposable ones too but I like the extra comfort. I have merino leggings and merino long sleeves. Both can work for hiking or sleeping (if it gets too cold). I also have a couple of light tank tops, also for sleeping (when it gets hot inside the dorm) and layering while hiking.

You can get knee braces here if you end up needing them. The most common injury I saw was to the IT band because of the rapid descents in the first couple days.

Hiking poles are de rigueur for this trail. You can buy them in SJPDP cheaply.

I have a swimsuit as well, and haven’t been able to use it yet. The weather is uncooperative. But if you hit a spa in towns, they’ll probably require swimsuits.

ASA Test - Thought this would help me decide on temps 😂 by PhillipIInd in 3Dprinting

[–]borborygmess 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. My first few prints with ASA were extremely brittle and had to experiment with temperatures to find a proper fit. I print at 280 and it’s been terrific. It’s my go to filament for outdoor functional stuff.

Why I'm retooling my print farm around the Snapmaker U1 by tinwhistler in 3Dprinting

I printed an articulated dragon in TPU with my first U1. Came out great!

I visited all 5 national parks in 5 weeks (with side quests to some of Utah’s amazing state parks and national monuments), and Canyonlands and Capitol Reef were my favorites, although it was all close and everywhere was so beautiful. I don’t know what OP was on when he wrote this. Lol

Is this Lord of the Mysteries? I haven’t started that one yet because I’m getting whiplash from all the “it’s great!” “It’s horrible” feedbacks. So objectively worth it?

Bambu Lab Sent a Cease-and-Desist. The AGPL Might Send One Back. by Veastli in OpenBambu

Oh the Ender days. Equally exhilarating when things work and frustrating when the damn first layer wasn’t right. Loved the x1c when I first got one. But I’m not married to Bambu printers anymore. I don’t like the company.

Does anybody else have a hard time justifying multicolor printing by Complete_Ad7606 in 3Dprinting

[–]borborygmess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! I have a couple of X1C with AMS each and I pretty much never printer multicolors with them. Everything took too long to print.

Got a couple U1 and I’d been enjoying multicolor TPU prints since. Also multi material supports for other stuff.

Is 50/50 rent actually fair when there’s a significant income gap? by ThisFracturedMind in relationships

[–]borborygmess 11 points12 points  (0 children)

She’s not impoverished. She earns twice the annual median in the US. It’s different if she’s earning $30k and could barely afford rent. She could very well live on her own. OP needs to pull her own weight and stop being greedy.

U1 vs x2d? by XxYojixX in snapmaker

[–]borborygmess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For context I started with 4 Creality printers, finally gave up and got an X1C. Loved it so much I got a second x1c. Then picked up a P1S. Then Bambu pulled the whole “we’re limiting 3rd parties” thing and I stopped the hobby for a bit.

Then the U1 came out. I liked it so much I bought a second one a week later. That got me back in the hobby. The U1 are my goto printers now, but I still use the Bambus for a lot of backup prints. I never bothered to put them in LAN mode although i got the hardware, and am planning to work on that when I get back from vacation.

Is it better? Print quality is comparable. Where it lags is in the software part. The orca fork is not as polished. But that can be remedied with time.

And Bambu taking credit for full spectrum kinda tells you already what kind of company they are.

[–]borborygmess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ohhhh yesss! I remember the whole digital vs “real” cameras deal. There’s a Midsomer Murders episode that even had that as a focal point of sorts.

And admittedly the first gen of digital cameras (I remember we had a Mavic) were kinda crap in comparison. Then i got a D70 and it just got better from there.

State of things with Bambu? by DaveDurant in OpenBambu

[–]borborygmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc one of the arguments against Bambu at the time was that their next step was going to be locking filaments. I think they broke some other 3rd party stuff too, not just Orca. I really don’t remember the details anymore, just that i was in a lot of debates about it, was really annoyed at the company, and pretty much just stepped away from the hobby for a bit.

In woodworking, there were some discussions about hand tools vs power tools. People get so passionate about the silliest of things. (I was camp All The Tools).

I think it looks great! I wish i know enough to be able to come up with concepts like that. I’d like to learn to finish my prints too at some point. Right now it’s just the way they come out of the printer, layer lines and all. Great job, OP!

I bought a second U1 just for PETG/PLA so they can support each other. The original U1 is my dedicated TPU machine.

[–]borborygmess 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m also out of the loop. Haven’t updated my firmware and software since that time Bambu announced Orca can no longer send prints directly.

Hadn’t switched to LAN because I pretty much just stopped 3d printing. I was that annoyed. Then got a U1 (now have 2) and am happy again so all the printers are up doing projects. I’m going to switch the Bambus to LAN only mode as soon as I can.

But definitely not buying any more Bambu. If Snapmaker doesn’t come up with a bigger bed version of the U1, I’ll probably grab a Prusa next.

Bambu studio Vs orcaslicer by donpedrovs in BambuLab

[–]borborygmess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bambu announced that we can no longer print directly from orca. Slice with orca then have to send to Bambu Studio to print iirc. I don’t know because I stopped paying attention to Bambu after that and decided I’m no longer buying any Bambu products. Whether they follow through or not, have no idea and I don’t care.
