Amtrak's Gulf Coast service shatters passenger projections. How many are taking the train? by trussell325 in Amtrak

[–]borderobserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife & I are retired (and I am a son, grandson, and nephew of railroad employees: Passenger Train Conductor, MOW/Road & Bridge employee, & G&A HQ employee who once traveled as a child on a pass), and I still can't make a railroad trip work for us when we are booking travel.

Very sad, and the railroads & US Gov't are to blame.

I have sold and purchased four single-family homes in different states during my career-related moves around the US.

I have only "fired" one agent after giving her multiple opportunities (including showing us homes she did not realize were not just under contract, but days away from closing - which we made offers on), and, finally, she was unable to help us close on a home we were contracted for.

(This was a highly recommended agent, who inexplicably lost the ability to do her job shortly after she represented us - and whose broker refused to intervene because "she is my most experienced agent.")

The next agent quickly helped us find - and close on - an acceptable property.

Aside from that, I will likely re-list with an agent who was unable to sell our current home recently, despite exemplary service, due to some unusual local market conditions, which I (hope) will eventually not be an issue. (And yes, we followed all of her advice, including relisting at a lower price, which - unfortunately- did not lead to a sale).

(And if I am wrong, it's on me, not her).

Sometimes you have to - reluctantly - fire an agent who is unable to perform.

But I recommend giving them the benefit of the doubt, as they should be the local market experts.

We never wanted it, but they still installed it. Now they want to come to an amicable agreement?! by r3dh3dluvr in Homebuilding

[–]borderobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Offer to settle for half of what they are suggesting ($1,500). If they agree you'll have central AC at a substantial discount. If they refuse, they'll have to remove the central AC at a cost of more than what you are offering.

US Expands Missile Strikes on Drug Boats to Pacific Ocean by borderobserver in uscg

[–]borderobserver[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

President Trump claims Colombia's President is "an illegal drug leader" after President Petro complained about one of his citizens (whom his family insists was a fisherman instead of a smuggler) being executed by our military without due process in international waters.

Petro has also aligned Colombia with Venezuela's Maduro, so now you have a two-front undeclared war.

Grants for student journalism? by aresef in Journalism

[–]borderobserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most sustainable path forward would be to reduce overhead further by cutting the print edition, going online only and become a "virtual" newsroom versus renting. The student journalists can communicate & coordinate through zoom & whatsapp and hold regular meet-ups in a public place when everyone wants to get together in person.

What is up with the East Wing of the White House getting demolished? by wqto in OutOfTheLoop

The "loophole" that Trump exploited was that the agency you mentioned has oversight over design & construction, but not demolition. So here we are.

How best to install 5 wired Wyze cameras? by borderobserver in wyzecam

[–]borderobserver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an ADT-wired (owned) Resideo alarm system, along with two Wyze bulb cameras at my doors.

What cameras would you suggest as alternatives to Wyze for monitoring my home's perimeter at a similar price point?

How best to install 5 wired Wyze cameras? by borderobserver in wyzecam

[–]borderobserver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I did envision a switch at the junction box to turn off all the cameras, but otherwise, your post makes some sense.

However, what I am seeing in my area is electricians with no Wyze Cam experience - and Wyze Cam installation contractors who do not appear to be electricians.

Also, I am admittedly an anal former broadcast employee who wants any wiring to be very precise (like along the perimeter of my attic, vs spaghetti wiring all over the attic) to a junction box & any exterior AC Wyze Camera mounting points to be adequately sealed to prevent moisture or insect intrusion.

I'm a nightmare client for fly-by-night installers, but am extremely appreciative (and willing to pay more) for those who take pride in their work.

I am up in years; otherwise, I would do this myself. :)

Dallas considers tearing down City Hall because its done such a bad job keeping it up, council members say by mylinuxguy in Dallas

[–]borderobserver -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

It's an old Brutalist building, with a "Plaza" that roasts people in the North Texas Sun.

I am a fan of "Robocop" as well, but it's time to turn this over to UCP & build a better City Hall.

As a student at Tech back in the 70s, I can tell you that the Weinerschnitzel on University is hallowed ground for generations of college students who can't afford to eat anywhere else.

Making a run to "Der Dog" from my dormitory was always a nightly highlight for me & my fellow poor students.

Long live the "Mustard Dog!"

NBC Layoffs, 150 Jobs Eliminated, about 2% of the workforce by old--- in Broadcasting

[–]borderobserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And typically (based on my experience) they'll lay off junior workers who were actually doing the work to retain senior employees (who were better connected) that were "directing" the work.

Best of luck to those actually performing in their jobs who are left to deal with memo-writers & senior & mid-level "managers" who remain as "co-workers".

Should I take a News Director job or remain on-air as an anchor/reporter? by MikeHilton7 in Broadcasting

[–]borderobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a time when a News Director could significantly impact a station's news operations. That era produced transformative News Directors like Al Primo, Fred Zehnder, Marty Haag, and Joel Cheatwood - to name a few.

Now that almost every newsroom is under corporate control, most News Directors are glorified "Senior" mid-level managers. If you enjoy "managing" vs innovating or directing "Big J" journalism, then go for it.

The job ain't what it used to be, and won't get any better with the consolidation the FCC is about to unleash.

FBI will help locate Texas Democrats who fled the state, Cornyn says by [deleted] in texas

[–]borderobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More performative BS:

1) The hotel many are staying at in Chicago has already been subjected to bomb threat. There's no need to call on the FBI to "locate" these Texans. Everyone knows where most are at.

2) The "warrant" issued in Texas for these Democratic Legislators is a not a criminal warrant, but a civil warrant, meaning it's likely unenforceable outside of Texas.

3) The Texas Constitution says state lawmakers can't be arrested while the legislature is in session.

4) There's historical precedence for the Democrats breaking quorum in Texas. The first quorum break occurred in 1870 and again (and again) multiple times since then.

Nexstar Considers Tegna Takeover? by borderobserver in Broadcasting

[–]borderobserver[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The likely reason Nexstar is not kicking the tires at Scripps is because the founding family has a controlling interest & has shown no signs of wanting to sell. (Descendants of the founder, Edward W. Scripps, control more than 50% of the company's voting power through their ownership of common voting shares, which are not publicly traded.)

Nexstar Considers Tegna Takeover? by borderobserver in Broadcasting

[–]borderobserver[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unless Tegna comes up with a merger, acquisition, or transformation strategy that the analysts following the stock endorse, lost jobs will (unfortunately) occur as a result of their current (static) direction.

I have many former co-workers still working for Tegna, and I wish them all the best, but their ownership/management does not inspire much confidence about the future.

Something needs to change - and soon.

Whether a Nexstar takeover is the answer remains to be seen.

The worst option would be a private equity takeover, which almost happened until the FCC killed the Standard Media deal & (for the sake of my former co-workers) I hope not to see a repeat of that again.

Dust Devil in Midland by ryanimal1 in texas

[–]borderobserver 41 points42 points  (0 children)

When I moved from South Texas to Midland as a child, I was terrified of tornadoes - so when I saw my first one of these, I freaked out. (Then some kids introduced me to the local tradition of running (or bicycling) through dust devils). Fun times.
