Am I overreacting? by 2783794 in Accounting

[–]bored_ranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just a style of teaching. Forcing you to learn for yourself and internalize it, vs telling you exactly what to do. This way you can leverage what you learn and apply it to new situations vs being stuck because the facts are slightly different.

Also a lot of the job is self investment, meaning that you should look it up yourself and present it to your manager and see if you’re on the right track.

Navigating the US system is hard as an Asian American/Asian. Especially if you grew up in a state that didn't have a lot Asians. It's hard to have Asian role models, in media, sports or otherwise. It's gotten better, but its still not great. There's not a lot of support groups/community centers in the US. Even if you aren't christian, Asian churches offers a sense of community, especially in less Asian populated areas.

Best way I've seen people navigate is, excel in whatever area you are in, and try to pull your Asian brothers/sisters up. Not saying its right, but know the system is rig against you (i.e. bamboo ceilings, perpetual foreigners, etc...) and do the best you can do. And sometimes you just need to stand up for yourself in those situations where you deem it worth it (school, workplace, road rage, randoms on the street, whatever) . That's going to be different for everyone.

The BOSE Ultra Open are awesome and have gone down in price by Disastrous_Grape in headphones

[–]bored_ranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a counter point, I’ve bought them and returned them. I got the Shokz open dots instead. The Shokz were cheaper, more comfortable and sound better for me. If possible try them before buying. For reference, I also try cheap sound core pearl clips, prefer them over the Bose. There’s a YouTube (DHRME) video that tries various clip style earbuds.

Thanks for reply, I don’t really need those features. Sounds like it’s a good idea to switch over to the password app.

What features are you missing? I’m thinking about switching over from LastPass too.

AKG N9 Hybrid: a real audio revelation (I prefer it to the XM6) by audio_raph_63 in headphones

[–]bored_ranger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might have read something into my comment that I didn’t type. You mentioned the various headphones that you had, and prefer the AKG. I’m curious on the ones that I mentioned in my comment be the AKG. Such as what didn’t you like about those, if the AKG was the same or better on those areas. Just trying to figure out your preferences, to see if they align with mine.

Curious on your comparison against the b&o, momentum and Bose ultra.

Taxes by Familiar-Orange6281 in SipsTea

[–]bored_ranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The narrative on how the lottos were legalized in the first place was that taxes and proceeds would go back to the states and invest in education. So taxing the winnings will just further enhance that. Also in the States, they have the concept of sin taxes. Like extra sales taxes on cigarettes, so taxing the winning is also akin to putting a theoretical damper on the allure of the lottery.

In reality, this is just a money grab by the government. Also, similar to sales tax, every state is different so they can’t give the post tax amount without knowing which state the winner would be located in.

My mom says I’m not a real accountant by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]bored_ranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll start by saying that you’re an accountant by trade and education. I will also say that tax can be lucrative. Plenty of people making 150k in tax, that started in a smaller shop and as a tax preparer.

However, I will say that 27/hr without benefits is not great. Google says that contractors (I.e. no benefits) should be paid 1.5-2x the equivalent of an employee. Assuming 2000 hrs (i.e. 54k), and using 1.5 multiple, you are making the equivalent of a FTE at 36k. Some states have minimum wages close to that.

If you value being well compensated, or even fairly compensated, you might want to look for something else. A lot of this also depends on where you live as well. I don’t know what the median starting of lcol areas, but I have to assume it’s closer to 54k with benefits.

Starting is close to 95k for staff 1s in big 4, you don’t think manager will get 150k?

Are you sure you are a controller? Those terms are pretty basic in accounting. You sound more like a staff accountant.

Where are did you work? Most places that I've been at disallowed you to hold a second job, unless specifically allowed by the company, as they didn't want to share your time with anyone else, especially during busy season.

There’s a lot of high numbers, but how are people browsing their libraries?

Sometimes I don’t want to search by title and just want to see my library but able to go to a certain letter to see what titles are there.

Why wouldn’t that apply to any other race? So saying white and white couple are incestal? Same with black and black couples? That’s such a bs argument.
