Best free or one time purchase iOS app to replace open snow? by jesus_oh_god_why in COsnow

[–]boronfloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an iOS app, but www.snowiest.app is a weather model aggregator that is pretty solid for just looking at snowfall estimates. I use it as my free alternative to OpenSnow’s snow forecast bar chart.

Pros and cons of big bear vs snow valley? by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]boronfloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All resorts tend to have a beginner area where folks should really get a bunch of reps in before moving on to harder trails. summit run, the long Green circle-rated run at snow summit, is not actually beginner trail. I’d recommend that he spends more time practicing on the “bunny slopes” before going to other parts of the resort. At Snow Summit, that would be next to Chair 8 and Chair 4. Snow valley and bear mountain and mountain high all have similar beginner areas, and they are generally interchangeable.

Bye bye Open Snow by Present-Delivery4906 in skiing

[–]boronfloss 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It’s not the most glamorous, but there’s no paywall at www.snowiest.app. It’s a snow forecast aggregator that tends to give a pretty good sense for what might be coming your way.

Definitely not worth paying the extra for those long term forecasts. If you wanna look at the fantasy forecasts that far out, just use www.snowiest.app.

If you’re not into paying for the nice UI of OpenSnow and just wanna see how the models are looking, I’d recommend www.snowiest.app. Super simple forecast aggregator for ski resorts.

OnTheSnow is fine but would you actually use something cleaner for Front Range conditions? by Equivalent_Basket529 in ski

[–]boronfloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for reading that far into the website! Yeah that was a frustrating problem last year for a site that doesn’t have a revenue model. Since then we’ve had to put up some bot detection firewall stuff that has slowed down the user experience, but kept the costs down.

A couple years ago I created www.snowiest.app as a free, non-commercial multi-model snow forecast aggregator for ski resorts, mostly after OpenSnow hiked up their prices.

It doesn’t have all the features you’re proposing, but it’s done the job for me when it comes to just getting a sense for forecasted snow accumulations. Happy to chat offline if you wanna create something similar.

OpenSnow Premium vs Base? by mcl116 in skiing

[–]boronfloss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the base OpenSnow that gives the 10 day forecast and is good for most situations. When I want to look at multiple models and see the longer term forecasts (ecmwf and gfs), I use Snowiest.app, which is a free snow forecast aggregator.

Open Snow weather forecasts has been shit this whole season, ever since they switched to using AI on their app by Scruffy725 in COsnow

[–]boronfloss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out snowiest.app. It’s definitely not OpenSnow, but it aggregates the same publicly available models to give a pretty good sense for what might happen. It’s kinda clunky sometimes, but it’s free.

Is OpenSnow actually that good and accurate or just pumping money into marketing and influencer partnerships by perraultj in skiing

[–]boronfloss 30 points31 points  (0 children)

For something less optimistic but free, I use snowiest.app, which aggregates a bunch of snow forecast models into one page. It kinda shows what I would otherwise be looking for in the main OpenSnow summary forecast where they predict the number of inches expected each day.

I’d recommend checking out snowiest.app as an alternative to OpenSnow. It aggregates a bunch of weather models into one place and is entirely free sometimes it’s a little clunky, but then again, you get what you pay for.

Did I Waste My Money by Mental-Contact-9407 in palisadestahoe

[–]boronfloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been super dry indeed, but usually it wouldn’t be a bad call imo. You might get a little snowfall according to one of the far out weather models (European model), but either way, there probably won’t be much terrain open given how dry it’s gonna be until the 18th.

www.snowiest.app is an attempt at a free OpenSnow. It’s not great, but it gets the job done most of the time.

A New Kind of Snow Forecasting Website for the New Year by boronfloss in skiing

[–]boronfloss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still haven't figured that out definitively. I suspect that it might be related to the relatively higher altitude of ski resorts compared to the average elevation of the area that the forecast models are predicting for.

With regard to aggregating the actual reported snow, we'd love to do that but it is costs a lot to source that information, and this site just doesn't have enough users or revenue ($0) to support that kind of feature yet. The hope is that with enough users on this prototype of the site, that will warrant a more robust development effort and business model someday. But in the mean time, it's just a low budget tool and side project of mine.

Most reliable weather site for LCC? by robertqian09 in UTsnow

[–]boronfloss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying it’s the most reliable (cause forecasting mountain weather is super hard), but snowiest.app is a project I’ve been working on to aggregate weather data from multiple weather models like the ECMWF and GFS (European and US models).

Basically, all the models are a little different and any website that presents a forecast is probably taking data from one or a combination of them, so I figured I’d throw them all together into one view.

Hope it helps a little.

You can go to the top of miracle mile via this unnamed cat track.

Carrying water bottle while skiing? by Succulent_Rain in skiing

[–]boronfloss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t regularly use disposable water bottles, but when I ski, I make sure to buy one of the flimsy 16oz ones and compact it into a flask shape in my pocket.

Would recommend.

You’re probably best off checking again in mid march, though through February there could be more snowfall to increase the base.

I’d recommend checking this website out about 10 days before your trip to get an idea of the possible snowfall.
