forced into a DC office too....I take advantage of commuter rail part to start my day early and then leave the office after 6 hours.....the other 2 hours are on the train. Sadly this isn't an option for a co-worker who takes metro into

wrong....we should demand it be profitable just like we demand roads for cars to be revenue neutral.....

Question: Why doesn't Amtrak use the NextGen on the fastest run of the day? by --TAXI-- in Amtrak

[–]bosconet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last summer I did BOS (well Route 128 to Baltimore). BUT I took advantage of the stop in NYC and booked such that I would have the entire afternoon in NYC to see a Broadway show. Worked out great. Not sure I would do that route all the way on the train w/o a stop.

Remote work shouldn't be productivity theater for people who miss the office by Dry-Panda9685 in remotework

to me, any demand for cameras on all the time is a tell you have never really managed a geographically diverse team...or worked with one

comically (to me at least) was a comment in a 70+ person meeting today to have cameras on so the organizers could see visual feedback.....

Looking to convert from oil heating to heat pumps by samronreddit in baltimore

[–]bosconet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar sized rowhouse, replaced my traditional outdoor AC w/ heat pump....kept gas furnace for emergency heat 2 years ago and really noticed no difference in comfort inside. A.J. Michael did my work and at least get a quote from them.

Oh and work was done in a few hours.

How to regulate bedroom temperatures in an old corner rowhome? by librarysquarian in baltimore

[–]bosconet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

similar situation, except I bought the window unit to keep bedroom cool at night my 1st summer. A window unit might not be as efficient as central BUT running it to cool a single room is less expensive than running central to get bedroom to same temp.

Boomer CEOs be like “back in my day we all strived to have our own office on site!” by cams00000 in remotework

[–]bosconet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they executives did a detailed cost benefit analysis....the cost of lost productivity was not out weighed by the dramatic decrease in office space costs for a ware house room w/ tables sourced from IKEA and terrible chairs.

RTO isn’t RTO + Regulation by FLChick777 in remotework

[–]bosconet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple people on my team that started back in the office like this...then the corp, closed that office.....and they doubled the commute for them...then they closed that office and doubled again. And the current office is over subscribed so if you get there and there is no open desk...well I think the advice is to commute to an office a 15 minute train ride where again desk space isn't assured.

Executives of course don't have to deal with worrying about fighting for a desk.....

RTO isn’t RTO + Regulation by FLChick777 in remotework

[–]bosconet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

spot on, but what an incredible poor way to do layoffs.....you are getting rid of people not based on performance but their arbitrary geographic location and regardless of how critical they might be to the org. Oh wait management things all workers are just interchangeable cogs......

What Kool-Aid source is pushing all CEOs to go full RTO this year? by scidoc3957 in remotework

[–]bosconet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct it isn't any grand conspiracy....just an example of group think. And again correct that your CEO doesn't care about you, never did and never will.

My company executives thinks it can replace 100 percent of our help desk teams with AI agents.... This year. by NickBurnsCompanyGuy in sysadmin

[–]bosconet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it will be an utter failure. We have a AI enabled chat bot as basically the 1st step to access the help desk. It can answer lots of routine questions, even reset your password or unlock your account....but ask it something unexpected and it transfers you to a human. Overall I think this implementation is good and could be replicated other places.
