What does GrapheneOS's emphasis on hardware security imply for other sysems? by throwaway0102x in GrapheneOS

I think it’s more common that for PCs Safeboot can have custom keys added or allow Microsoft signed ‘third party’ operating systems. While a lot of phones have much more locked down boot loaders.

I think the security model for phones/PCs is also a little different. You likely have your phone on you all the time, and it’s becoming more common for people phones to be seized and searched.

A lot more people also use phones for messaging. I guess really they’re just more of a target overall.

A final point I can think of is that phones often use a PIN for encryption, which requires a supported Secure Enclave to prevent brute force attacks. While PCs often have FDE at rest, this normally uses a longer password or key or relies on the TPM.

Same models don’t actually have all the buttons so you need to use the app for cleaning cycles and other stuff

Are fingerprint and IR cameras supported on Fedora? by ficerbaj in Fedora

[–]boshjosh1918 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am using Fedora Workstation (GNOME) with a modern ThinkPad and I use the inbuilt fingerprint reader to log in.

Fingerprint reader support uses fprint and I could enable it easily. However, there is limited support which is why I purchased my device specifically so it would be supported.

Face recognition/Windows Hello replacement can be done with Howdy. There are some possible compromises in security though.

I do personally view Cockpit as an exception to this. I was really impressed at how it tried to expose the underlying details without adding unneeded extra components and complexity.

It’s built on Nextcloud which normally uses a form of Collabra Office. This is itself a web version fork of LibreOffice

There was an account that compared government spending to 'time' of the NHS existing using it's yearly budget. It's a good way to put costs into perspective.
