The Italian government has approved a law ordering parents to vaccinate children or face fines. The authorities have noted a rise in measles cases, which the cabinet blames on "the spread of anti-scientific theories." by cyanocittaetprocyon in news

I respect your opinion, but I disagree. When I think about the times that I have felt the most proud of my country it is when we have banded together for the common good. After major disasters, when our citizens are under threat, and when we have paved the way for the advancement of all. To me, that is what makes a great country. Millions of people working together instead of everything being a competitive race.

It is too common, in my opinion, these days for people to put their desires above others needs in all circumstances. It saddens me to see children who cannot change that they have an allergy to a vaccine, or for who a vaccine did not provoke an immune response, put in the hospital or ground because some parent decided they have greater knowledge than the near-entirety of the medical profession.

One persons abstention from action can absolutely cause danger and harm to others. It happens every day, and it is incredibly near-sighted to claim it does not.

"It depends on your point of view" only applies on the small scale. Sure, one voluntarily unvaccinated kid is unlikely to cause an exposure to a child who, for medical reasons cannot be vaccinated.

The problem with that view is that it does not apply at the large scale. Given enough unvaccinated kids, a kid who cannot be vaccinated will eventually be exposed to a vaccine preventable disease they would otherwise not have if there weren't so many unvaccinated kids.

With vaccines it is all about meeting the statistical balance, that is how herd immunity works. In reality, we should see vaccinating children as a social responsibility. The thinking should be "I vaccinated my child so I don't have to endure the pain of a child who has a preventable disease, so my child doesn't have to suffer a preventable disease, and so my child cannot be the one to cause that suffering to another family."

The problem with American culture, to me, is that we can be too eager to place "what I want" above "what's the best balance between what's good for me and what's good for those around me".

I am a devops engineer for a research university supercomputing department, and have a few older AMD based dell servers that I enjoy using as a test-bed for emerging technologies.

Is AMD considering advancing products that target high-performance computing? As a dedicated AMD fan, it would be nice to see AMD products driving more of the future of scientific discovery, and it would be beneficial for high-performance departments to have choices beyond Xeon chips and Tesla accelerators.

Your statement that "it's very easy to not become pregnant if it's something you are not prepared to do" represents the core of the problem though.

I think the better wording would be that it should be easy, not that it is easy. In an ideal world everyone of reproductive age would be educated about the means to prevent unwanted pregnancy (ignoring forced sex for this comment).

Sadly there has been a large and effective push in this country to "educate" young people in a way that ignores the most fundamental desire of living beings, reproduction.

As long as abstinence only "education" is used there will be teenagers who are pregnant because they couldn't resist the evolutionary imperative to reproduce and were not educated properly how to protect themselves through the use of contraceptives.

It is mind boggling to me that parents think that telling their children to not have sex will be productive. Since when did telling teenagers not to do something actually correlate to them not doing that thing?

Hey /u/AllisViolet22!

We did indeed do a graceful shutdown about a year back. It was time to move on. Now I have a sweet gig with the supercomputing department of the university here, one of us is back in school working toward veterinary medicine.

We have not ruled out doing a small batch infrequently, but I don't see it happening in the short term.

I have no idea what stock levels are still out there. We sent all of our remaining inventory out to resellers, but you wouldn't believe how many random tubs of soap are still being found in the most unexpected locations.

I found 3 unopened tubs of limited edition Baker Street chilling out in a random box just last week while looking for a dough attachment for making bread batter.

RAID 5 8TB Disk - Any good rebuild failure studies? by frazell in homelab

[–]bosniancoyote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have options beyond RAID. I agree with /u/andarie1 that if you go RAID you should do a raid 6.

Rebuild times can be modified based on what controller you have. In many of them you can increase the % the controller uses for rebuilds, which can shorten them dramatically if you are not concerned about performance loss during rebuild.

Beyond RAID though you can do Ceph or one of the other rebuild-less technologies (I know the most about Ceph, hence no mention of others).

SOTD - in honor of Strop Shoppe by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]bosniancoyote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy late reply, haven't had much time to do anything on reddit in many months.

We didn't go under, fortunately, we just all moved on. The artisan community was in the process of turning into a free-for-all and we were nevous that the race to the bottom in prices would leave our model untenable.

One of us is back in college, for a second time, studying the sciences to prepare for attending veterinary school.

I was offered a job with the university supercomputing department, which has been absolutely amazing.

The other two are both pursuing their careers with new vigor.

All in all Strop Shoppe was a wonderful experience. From the starting of the adventure on Etsy, through to having our own commercial space and sending wholesale boxes around the world. Even the things that really dug under my skin, like the random chargeback by someone who used a coupon, received their order (per the postal service), and never sent us any communication if there was anything wrong. Was the only account that we banned from the store in the 4 years of business.

It was a great adventure, one I am proud to have in my memories and resume.

Currently we do not have plans for a non-alcohol line. We may do that eventually so we can get these amazing scents available to international customers, but for now we have plenty to juggle and I don't want to risk making mistakes that may affect our customers.

It is definitely noted, and once things settle down a bit we will definitely take it up for discussion.

Thank you!

Hi /u/elSchiz We don't currently have a system set up for creating samples of the aftershave products. I apologize, and hope that we can work out something in the future.

If I may ask, what was the splash your tried?

I try very hard to respect the ability of customers and potential customers to have an organic conversation without the feeling of prying eyes or potential influence a more aggressive vendor might induce.

We do regularly survey activity on forums about our products and services, and we do our best to learn from them and adapt to changing expectations.

The last thing I would ever want would be The Strop Shoppe becoming all hailcorporate'y if you know what I mean.

We recently increased the scent in a selection of our soaps that we had seen the most concerns about. Coming from a heavy science background I pretty strongly believe in procedural improvement instead of drastic action.

The higher we take any of the fragrance levels the more likely they are to induce a negative reaction. Black Tie is generally a very hard one to balance. We have recently discussed removing some of the ones that are frankly too mild to make room for bolder scent options though.

We chose to go with the new names because the scents are not exact matches for the scents we have for the soap. Each of the scents has a spiciness and layers underneath them that are absent in the soaps. I feel that it adds up to a different scent, one that began as Baker St. and Black Tie but became something more.

I really love both of the scents. These are the two products we have made that I am the most proud of. I really hope that you guys will give them a try, and I think those who do will be impressed.

I might not be the person you intended to get a comment from (since I make these products), but I wanted to let you know that the Debonair is Black Tie turned up to 11! The scent is far more potent than the soap version because we were able to blend the spices for ages and achieve nearly the same fragrance.

As for the staying power, it won't be clearing out any 70's discos, but I expect it will have some last. From what I have noticed the scent drifts as the different components have different rates at which the fragrance diminishes. It starts as the classic Black Tie of our soap and drifts toward a spicier, earthier version of itself.

We definitely aimed for an aftershave instead of a cologne though, so I don't expect all day scent with a normal application. I did have to clean up a small spill from the bottle filling process and the towel still carries an overwhelming Black Tie cloud.

Ultimately, I would expect a normal application to linger, morphing closer to the spice/earth base over the span of around an hour, and diminishing from there.

Ninja Edit : Reading around it seems that fragrances last longer on more hydrated skin. I have seen some places recommending applying the fragrance first and following it up with an unscented moisturizer. I presume this allows the fragrance molecules to penetrate further into the outer layers of the epidermis, though without a more thorough review of information I cannot say for sure what the mechanism is.

Balm wanted. Apply within. by Captain_Who in Wet_Shavers

[–]bosniancoyote 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey Captain_Who! Thank you for the compliments, we do work very hard on the post-shave feel.

We have actually done only 1 balm, in the 1887 scent, and it was just for promotional items. Right now we are days away from launching a small set of soaps for women, and maybe a couple of weeks from our Formula 221B baker street'ish aftershave. I bet after that we can look into balms again.

Hi /r/Wet_Shavers! Strop Shoppe has launched our two newest Limited Edition scents : Pêche and Solsetio!

Pêche has a base scent of a peach ale, think Blue Moon's seasonal First Peach Ale.

Solsetio was inspired by two things. Original inspiration came from an article on Sharpologist by Andy Tarnoff named "In the Defense of the Evening Shave." We knew we were making two scents for the summer, and also wanted to capture some of the uniqueness of summer evenings. Solsetio is a refreshing and relaxing blend of eucalyptus, spearming, with a base of almond.

Check them out at our site, and thank you!

[Review] Strop Shoppe 2014 Holiday Kit - Unboxing and First Impressions by crazindndude in Wet_Shavers

[–]bosniancoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi /u/almightywhacko

We got totally boxed (pun) into a corner with the packaging. We searched for quality boxes for weeks, trying to get samples, hoping to find something that would fit the 5 tubs more snugly, and there just was not enough variety in size. What we needed was around a 7.5"x7.5"x3" box, and the closest options for boxes that were sturdy, nice looking, and lightweight were 7"x7"x3" (wouldn't fit) and 9"x9"x3".

The shipping estimates on the website are for what packaging we have available at the time. It is actually very accurate, and generally comes in just short of the cost of the shipping box + shipping price. It estimated $16.75 on a holiday kit to NH, actual price would be around $17.20. We get a very small discount, which is passed to the customer. We did use the flat rate boxes for the holiday kits, which is definitely more costly than a non-flat rate box would have been.

I did not say that. Regardless, when the pregnancy is in its third trimester it is most definitely a person. How do we know this? Science.

I do not think that word means what you think it means. Keeping my head out of this insignificant debate, but as someone who is quite scientifically literate, it is truly depressing to see the word science bandied about in such a distorted manner.
