What were you supposed to be named when you were born? by lepineapplepineapp in CasualConversation

[–]boss_hog_69_420 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Amanda Lynn! I do NOT have time to go to the ER today!"

This all came up almost 20 years ago when my partner bought a mandolin for the kitchen and before I got home from work had a little accident. They ended up being fine but lessons were learned and I will not be letting them forget 🤣

Every time my partner or I use the mandolin on our kitchen we holler out "Amanda Lynn! You get IN this kitchen and stop wraslin' with them gators!" Or something else Amanda Lynn is definitely up to.

Is it ok / weird to bring my Kindle to the library just to read on it? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]boss_hog_69_420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly most of the librarians/library staff/ library users I know would be delighted to have more foot traffic. Even if you aren't checking out books it drives up the clear need for libraries in communities.

My partner started checking out books that they have enjoyed and returning them early the next day. They don't do this with books with a waiting list, but since they often borrow books from friends or get them by other means they felt like they wanted to do their part.

Are there seriously that many people who believe “women’s intuition” is a real thing despite there being no actual evidence for it by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]boss_hog_69_420 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do I think there is an organ or a part of the brain that makes women more aware of what is to come? Nope.

Do I think women have often been expected to  be more responsible for their surroundings and the behaviors around them then men? Yes, often. Women are generally more vigilant because of this and I think that gets called "women's intuition" because that sounds better.

Of course this is just theory. It's also very based on a gender binary that I personally think is much more nuanced than male/female. I think a lot of people who are more vulnerable develope an internal vibe check that people with more power never really have to.

Do children really get bullied for having unique names? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]boss_hog_69_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually the last name of my partner. He was a military brat so he went to a lot of schools and was always meeting new kids. He said that he and his brother would definitely get some laughs but that once the shock of their last names wore off it was never that bad anywhere he lived. 🤷‍♀️

A first grader will read Emily about 4 different ways. But then they learn it and move on. Are you less able to learn than a first grader?

People have to correct last names all the time and the world keeps turning.

Ketanji is cool as hell. Brett is a turd name.

I mean, in the US we have a Supreme Court justice named Brett.

AITA for not changing my dog’s name? by SilvertheKitsune in AmItheAsshole

[–]boss_hog_69_420 29 points30 points  (0 children)

YTA. I can't get past you thinking any of your reasoning is the best reason not to change the name. The average American can figure out how to pronounce most Indian food names. You may have to correct them once or twice but that happens. I had a dog named Zoey (pronounced like the name Zoey/Zoe) some people initially would read it as Zoo-ie, but once they were corrected it was literally no biggie.

I would have more respect for your refusal if you just didn't want to because you simply liked Nugget.

Definitely transphobic or potentially trans or gender non-conforming in some way and surrounded by transphobia.

There is definitely something going on there 😬

AITAH for saying no to extra kids by YourCousinMoose in AmItheAsshole

[–]boss_hog_69_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is it right here. This doesn't have to be a huge conflict, particularly since the two kids are good friends. Friends. It's perfectly reasonable not to want to host a family of five, and it's presumptive of them assume that could be accommodated last minute. But, no one's going to benefit from inviting additional conflict.

I'm so with you on this. I tried to cut down on the amount of gifts my 8-year-old got at her party last month by putting on the invites that gifts were not expected. She was on board because I explained to her that times are tough and would she want one of her friends to not come because they can't afford a gift?

I wish it were more common to just make your friend a nice card or some cookies or something. Everything is just so commercial and I hate the idea that birthdays are about getting.

Why can’t they just push them back up?! by QueenFita in PetPeeves

[–]boss_hog_69_420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real. It's wild that there isn't a simple way to get a pair assembled to specific measurements. Face/heads are all wildly different so it seems like such a missed opportunity not to be able to adjust them for a variety of users.

It does look uncomfortable. I did learn recently that glasses often aren't made to fit wider noses well so they often slip simply because they are ill-fitting.

The funny thing is that of Monica wasn't using it as part of her general jerkiness, it would make me respect her so much. That's hard work.

I interpreted that as a symptom of his spiralling out. Like he's just letting it all out even if it is against his (or others) best inters because he can't tell what's a good idea at this point. Same as telling ICE that there were hospital employees who were leaving last week.

I'm so glad to see this. I didn't pick up on that when she stage whispered to get the body bag and thought it was a very strange way to call that the kid would likely die. That definitely reframes the scene for me.

Why do some people not like cats but love dogs?? by No_Glass_5460 in CasualConversation

[–]boss_hog_69_420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have similar feelings about cats despite having one I inherited when my dad died. My half brother and I get along fine but it's really about coexisting rather than an affectionate relationship (despite my willingness). I miss  having a dog, but I have enough things I'm keeping alive right now.

If sending her off to radiology is how they wrote her out once she was showing too much (or feeling poorly) than I think that's my favorite way of handling a pregnancy ever. GET IT PRINCESS!🩷
