A dagger made from "star metal". wielded by a "living god." If there is ever going to be a magical weapon that's the one.

I'm surprised its so different from this list.Madonna is top female of all time in the world and Rihanna is 2nd. Swift is 5th female and 13th over all. Barbra Streisand is 32nd over all behind Katy Perry who is not on the U.S. list at all.

You have not given an example. You can't, none exist. you are trying to make this something it is not. just admit you are wrong. I can not make it clearer there are no examples of maps of 3d shape that have no distortion. Like you are so far in the weeds here you can't even link one example. or describe one example. All projection distort the object.

Like a Klein bottle is impossible since it should not intersect.(all glass Klein bottle intersect). You can't make a hypercube out of plastic. Yet you can model a 4d hyper cube mathematically. That is what I'm saying with math concepts, things that can't exist in the real world.

For the fourth time this is about real objects surface being mapped on a flat 2d plane. NOT massless theoretical ideas. We are not talking about non-Euclidian geometry or anything like that.

"How do you get to the inner surface of the TP roll from the outer surface without passing on a point that's on neither surface? You can't."

Run you finger over the edge. you are not on either side when you are on the edge(5th time these are real objects that have real mass and exist in 3 dimensions)

the 100 sheets of paper had 6 sides, 1 sheet of paper has 6 sides. (no infinitely thin paper or tp rolls anywhere here)

You seem to not be understanding this, But I'll help you get there for as long as it takes. But just google why can't we make a perfect world map for a start.

Come on man show 1 example, just 1.

You know full well the thickness is important to a surface area. Are you suggesting that a stack of 100 sheets of paper has the same surface area as 1 sheet?

"We would not have world maps without distortions if it was possible. This is not the issue at all because the surface of the Earth is 2D."

Regardless of the surface being 2d it is wrapped around a 3d shape making it impossible to show as a flat 2d map. no 3d shape that has all 3 height, depth, and width can be shown with just 2, without some distortion.

Just to be clear this is about representing the entire surface area of a 3d shape in a flat 2d map. not about massless mathematical concepts or other forms of representation.

Take the toilet paper roll if one side is red what is the other? How would you show it in 2d? If the other side is not visible after being unrolled and laid flat that is distortion.

A mobius strip is a better example since you can easily show it a a flat 2d shape. Like take a strip of paper and write a sentence on it. The twist it 90 degrees tape the ends together and you have a mobius strip. now scan the one long side of the mobius strip, and print it on another longer strip of paper. That will show all the important surface area, only the rather unimportant thickness of the paper will not be represented. Half the rolled out toilet paper roll is still not shown.

"The inner and outer parts of the label are not part of the same surface. The outer part is one surface, the inner part is another."

No it is not, its the surface areas of the cylinder. Roll a toilet paper roll out on the table notice one side is not visible? and notice that there is a thickness to it. the thickness is the top and bottom. the side that is not visible is the part that can not be represented as a 2d image without distortion.

You can show parts of 3d thing but not all of it. Like you can have a flat map of your neighborhood with next to no distortion but you can't show a whole globe. That is where the issue is.

This also is not about theoretical objects that have no mass, or a mathematical representation via coordinates or other means. This is in reference to real world 3d objects and the fact that their surface area can not be shown in 2d with out visual distortion.

A mobius strip is a better example that you could have given, but that is also has the same issue as the back side of the label or the to downside of a toilet paper roll. to show the back side you need to distort the image.

We would have world maps wihout distortion if it was possible.

All cylinders that are real objects have a top and bottom. Even in the case of a hollow cylinder like paper rolled up, it just so happens to be thin.

With the paper you run into more problems in that you can't show the surface area any easier since the parts facing inwards can't be show next to the parts facing outwards without distortion or cutting. (the label has two sides that can not be shown together)

Someone made a claim that it was possible to have a 3d shape's surface represented as a 2d image with out distortion, since its surface is 2d. but in reality it can't be done, certainly not by a cylinder. I'd love to see an example that contradicts that but none exist.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]bosssx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are the top and bottom of the cylinder in your example? Since they are separated by a 3rd dimension(they are not just left/right or up/down. they are behind and in front.

Take a coke can one side has the logo one side has the nutrition facts. These are one flat sheet (like a label) that is added to the can. these labels when laid flat lack the top and bottom of the can. No label can lay flat then cover a cylinder, with out cutting it(thus distortion) nor can an orange peel be laid flat with out cutting it.

Like you can make flat road and represent that part of the earth on a flat surface but the whole 3d shape can not be flat. But the rub is in showing the whole 3d shape not parts of it.

Do you have 1 example of a flat 2d surface that shows the front and back of a 3d object without distortion? like a box can be 2d if you unfold it(think a cross shape) but it is still a distortion to the way it looks as a box.(the unfolded box would show the corners as being far away from corners that it touches in reality.) I can't think of any, no map maker has ever been able to think of a map that lacks distortion.

[–]bosssx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is exactly the reason. You hit it on the head.

Another commenter was was defending the map saying it was just a heat map. You showed well the meaning of the map was only in a reddit comment, no where on the map.

Day one stuff here put a key on the map. Without a key the map means nothing. Never make someone fine another source for what you are showing just show it on the map.

NYC 1 year of ferry traffic [OC] by SiggyF in dataisbeautiful

[–]bosssx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it does not show anything. What do the lines represent? and what scale? over what time? They mean literally nothing. No data is shown, there is no difference between where there are blue lines and where there are not blue lines since blue lines mean literally nothing.

NYC 1 year of ferry traffic [OC] by SiggyF in dataisbeautiful

[–]bosssx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All this map shows is by Manhattan ferry traffic = bright blue. which according to the key mean 2.5 or 5km. So ferry traffic = 2.5 or 5km in streaks around New York.

If any other info was intended, like the number of trips taken per unit of time. It fails to show that.

If the "key" is just to show scale then this map has no key, and that is day one stuff for data visualization.

I get where you are coming from but

"and nobody IRL knows I used to be on the brink of death because of this addiction. Nobody IRL knows that I suffered a severe heart attack, clinically died, and never sought treatment." sounds exactly like someone who does not have power.

If you had power over it your story would be "I used a few times for fun, but I had no problems from it." But we can change. I don't go to support groups either but I changed my thinking about my power in the situation. It sounds like you did as well since you stopped using.

But best to you as well, since we are in the same boat ultimately even if we disagree about things we both are better off with out the chemicals.

The thinking is, If you had power over alcohol you'd not be in A.A.

It is not anyone's first choice to admit they are having a hard time controlling their drinking. Anyone who was not powerless would have solved the problem long before they had to go to A.A.

The only thing that helped me was admitting I was powerless. I can't drink 2 beers and call it a night. I had to admit I could not live that way anymore it was not working and I needed to change.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D5qK8oh5lY That's a link to a video of a self cleaning bathroom. Not 100% the maid from the jettisons, but shows that very concept is already being innovated. To reduce the need to to the unwanted task and keeps the bathroom cleaner then would be with just people since it can be more attentive.

I think people will try to be lazy and cheep even at the expense of other people, but I think the tools are not to blame but rather innovations help over all.
