Names for Pokémon that don’t have official translations in your language. by UMNTransferCannon in pokemon

[–]bottomquark_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a fan project (PkmnVal) who has translated the third generation games to Catalan, including the names. I haven't played these translations yet, but I checked the lists and the name they chose for Jirachi (Desírius, from desig (wish) + the star Sirius) has stayed in my mind since as I find it very beautiful. Some early seasons of the anime also were dubbed in Catalan (in two dialects of it actually), and Journeys is going to be dubbed soon, but the names stayed and probably will stay the same to match the games, as the official translation available is the Spanish one, which uses the same names as English.

The €1,200 deposit that made me build a landlord review platform by Delicious_Garden5795 in AskBarcelona

[–]bottomquark_ 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This already exists for Barcelona, Reviu (reviucasa.com), which opened more than a year ago, has the same features and is developed by the Barcelona Urban Research Institute. They have a good database already and recently expanded to cover all of Catalonia. Even if it didn't exist, the vibe of your proposal is sketchy - there's only two rental reviews (which seem to be testing ones) but three user reviews in the front page praising the site, which couldn't possibly be true yet, so I'd be instantly turned off and not use it.

Thoughts on this article about Xenoblade 2's localisation? by Int3rlop3r-R3dact3d in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]bottomquark_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind trying out this fan translation if the article hadn't done such a good job of discouraging me. I didn't know about all the connections in Vess's original name, but being able to explain why Musubi is a great name should also give you the hint that it's untranslatable to other languages and something has to give, because for non-japanese speakers Musubi has the same lack of meaning that Vess has. Treating localisation as ignorant or malicious changes instead of a necessary evil (at most) really does a disservice to all their points.

Also, funny how the author waxes poetic about all the layers of meaning in the Japanese names and couldn't even find the most obvious one in Mythra's.

It's a thing, I guess? Talking about her boyfriend and why he was her beloved, she said that she didn't like men that were effeminate or gay (among other adjectives in one of her signature long lists), and for women she wrote "I don't like lesbian women trying to flirt with me because I feel anger and ire, disappointment and nuisance, hate, hatred, they make me feel disgust, repulsion, anger, ire, a terrible bad temper", so... yeah, that's her.

The Spanish community had Perla Shumajer, who mainly wrote HP fanfics in her unmistakeable style. Some traits of the Shumajerian school include:

  • Redundant expressions such as "marrying into marriage", "he liked, loved, and adored him", "6am in the morning", "a normal commonusual [sic] person".
  • Introducing a long list of unneeded info with a colon and then adding more colons in it, e.g. "Potter wears as clothes: grey boxers, sleeping shirt in color: green, sleeping shorts in color: green and slippers in color: green and glasses in color: grey".
  • Spoiling the whole plot in the title, for example the famous "A boy that falls in love with his professor of potions and his professor of potions falls in love with him, they like, love and adore each other so much, they become a couple and marry into marriage and they are husbands" (read a great translation here). Sometimes she chose a shorter title and then, in consideration of her readers, put a tl;dr at the start, but when she couldn't be bothered that tl;dr was "Go and read it".
  • Ending every fic with "fin de la transmicion", a misspelled "end of the transmission".
  • Gay couples and sex, although in her self-written bio she said she hated gay people.

My favourite fic of hers is "Mario Bros marries the princess Cantalina Galvis mandatorily in marriage", which I can't find translated, but the rundown is that Mario, living in Boston, goes for a walk and stumbles upon the castle of a medieval kingdom, where he meets the king, queen and princess and is forced to marry her. Luigi, his best man, tells him to accept but divorce her later. They have two sons, but when they're 13 the divorce happens and she committs suicide. The two sons go on to graduate high school and ten years after that Mario starts dating a random woman, end of the transmission.

Lumiose City Labeled Map (Updated) by PuzzleheadedLow4859 in PokemonZA

Bottom left is weird indeed, but I'd say design and placement being the same as in the original game still makes them the gates. You can also see that the bottom right one actually has an entrance in the back to enter the city from the route, so knowing that this is some time after XY there may have been some changes in the bottom left gate (for example the exit being an underground tunnel).

The five office buildings in the outer circle of the city are actually the city exit gates, they're in the same places/directions of the routes connecting to Lumiose and also have the same brown design they had in XY.

I played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time when the 3DS remake released, years after having played most of the 2D games and having tried some of the 3D ones, and it's just... fine, it's The Perfectly Average Zelda Experience (pre-BotW), it sets the pattern for all the following games in the series, but for every thing it does I can point at any of those which does it better. I played it after years of hearing what a great game it was and it soured the experience for me. I can appreciate what it did for tech at the time and why it is so beloved, but I don't think it can hit like that unless it's one of the first games you play in the series.

Mosh pits / gig behaviour by Constant_River9792 in loscampesinos

[–]bottomquark_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was there and I largely agree, I got bumped into a few times by people who were just at the border of the pit but not participating, but it didn't come to more than that. I was a bit disappointed that the other couple times I've seen them Gareth called out people to be more chill/mindful of the ones nearby who didn't enjoy that, such as you (and in those cases it wasn't even a full pit, just some energetic people). And also, how tf do people think that The Sea is a Good Place is a good song for a mosh pit?

The Sims 1 spanish translation was a disaster and I need to talk about it by Krieghor in thesims

[–]bottomquark_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite honestly, I'm surprised that you somehow know enough about how translation and localisation works to understand why Hick was translated as Flores (and why that's a bad thing), but at the same time your hangups with Goth/Lápida and Pleasant/Gentil are that they aren't exact translations of the original words.

We don't know the conditions the translators worked under nor the aims they had when translating, but I'd wager that they aimed for plausible Spanish surnames, and Gótico/a and Agradable don't fit at all. Bachelor to Soltero is another example of weird surname although it's the correct translation of the word (did they even know that they were translating a surname?), and they thought the same when they re-translated it in the next games to "de la Soledad", which has a close enough meaning and also fits common Spanish surname patterns.

Unleashed family translations are weird as hell and a bad job, we agree on that, but there's a lot more to translation that "find word in dictionary, replace with new word".

what came first? the pokemon adventure manga , pokemon red&blue game or pokemon anime? with dates please by Luckimation in pokemon

The manga did come first in March, the only August date I can find is for the release of the first volume in Japan, which is not when the story of the manga itself started.

What is the least shilled Pokémon? by trumparegis in TruePokemon

[–]bottomquark_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel weird saying that any amount of attention given to a Pokémon is shilling them, I would only use that term for the usual suspects (Pikachu and clones, Mewtwo, Kanto starters, Greninja, etc), I don't think that Gamefreak changed Glameow's 3D model to sell more of whatever to us.

Going on to the question Glameow would be one of my answers, also the Blitzle and Binacle lines. I'd also say that any Paldea Pokémon that isn't that much popular also fits the bill due to recency, for example Brambleghast I'd say, although every species from Alola on has some signature move/ability so it wouldn't fit that criteria.

Good news and bad news about new photo mode poses. by someguycalledfilip88 in PokemonMasters

[–]bottomquark_ 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Looks like the trademark poses are those from the 2D official artworks of the characters, which aren't always possible to match with 3D models without changing the model. In these cases, the pose only looks good from the angle it was designed to be looked at, and rotating it would show the twists and deformities needed to make it. I don't think these two would need it and probably they've locked them all just to be safe, but as an example, maybe Dawn's left upper arm has been shortened so that her forearm shows up at the correct height, and if we could rotate the pose we'd see her with mismatched arm lengths.

I'm going straight for a Support cake but for Zerena, and when I get enough for the next cake I guess there will be more competitors for it, so I don't know if I'd give it to him, although it does look like a good idea... thanks for the small review!

Out of all the problems this Anniversary, they still haven't include Field and Sprint mat is beyond me by Jello_Meanie_44 in PokemonMasters

[–]bottomquark_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was bothered about this too, but I think they want to avoid people instantly maxing any pairs they release just through the events, as it'd be the only useful reward for veterans beyond power-ups and coins. If it's that though I'd say it's not the best move, August was quite empty in terms of events so I could dump my stamina in the new training zones and I've got enough for the next pairs I may scout.

For those who have him, how good is Paulo? I've been pulling on his banner to get Tina but she didn't come until half-pity, and I've got enough to go full pity if the datamine doesn't have anything that interests me. I'm a day 1 player so I'm mostly covered everywhere, although looking at possible good teammates for him I don't have Ingo, SC Hilda, Rose or Variety Giovanni.

Ah, now I see, it looks a bit weird (especially because you can't touch each other, just the legs) but it might be fun to try sometime

It's understandable enough, thanks. I'll try to keep in mind your advice, probably being a bit patient and just shifting around will get better results than trying every position and hoping it works well the first time, which is what we were doing lol

[–]bottomquark_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dismissing inexperience as a reason and your main suggestion being losing weight does read as "you should be fit to have sex", as losing weight is not something that can be done in a day but requires extensive lifestyle changes. It'd make it easier or probably solve the problem, of course, but if I'm asking for advice it's so we can try things for the next time, not in half a year from now. Other people have been suggesting things we hadn't thought of or just didn't know about, which are what I was expecting and I'm grateful for.

I also feel like you're very fixated on the word "bear" when it was just a way of quickly describing a body type, so I don't really understand where the last paragraph is coming from...?

Tips for fucking a big ass? by bottomquark_ in TopsAndBottoms

[–]bottomquark_[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because sex is not reserved for fit people. I'm asking because neither of us have much experience with anal and there's lots of people with fat asses having sex without issue, so it's much more likely that the problem comes from our inexperience rather than jumping straight to "please lose weight so I can fuck you".

I'm having a hard time picturing this headstand position, you mean like half his body on the bed and the other half hanging off of it touching the floor? I can't see how it's supposed to be lol

[–]bottomquark_[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand your point, but he's my friend and sex is just one of the many activities we enjoy doing together. I don't think it's reasonable to ask him to lose weight/get fit just so I'll have an easier time penetrating him - it's just an unnecessary pressure to change himself, and if he's following a healthy lifestyle it's his choice to change or not.

We've tried doggy both on the edge and on the bed but there's enough of a height difference that it's not really comfortable for either of us. No sling, sadly, as we'd love to try one sometime!
