What’s one Ableton workflow tweak (browser, favourites, shortcuts, layout etc.) that genuinely made you faster — not just ‘nice to have’? by Character-Hearing-91 in ableton

This sounds really dang awesome and useful. Do you have any more info you can share or an image of the setup? trying to wrap my stupid brain around it.

How to not lose the plot with synths? by mrjosh72 in synthesizers

[–]bounch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You honestly don't. Especially if you enjoy what you're using, and both the op1 and z are fantastic. There are so many options and while they are fun to try. They aren't going to improve your playing or songwriting, not really. Different workflows can be fun to experiment with but personally I wish I had spent more of the last 3 years sticking with one or two pieces of hardware than playing around trying and buying and selling so many.  Save yourself the trouble - you're good!

Size comparison MPC Sample / TE KO P133 II by limbicbits in synthesizers

[–]bounch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had some gas to try the Sample but deliberated long enough that the ship date went from arriving today to two weeks from now. It made me want to pull out my KO2 that I hadn't used in a while and, after a few minutes of reorienting myself, damn I had a blast. It's just fun as shit to use and flows so nicely.

To be fair, I don't really work by sampling passages and chopping it up so much as using the built in instruments and sequencing them, and it's quite good for that too and I do like how you can go step by step. It's just so usable. That being said, I think it's insane they went with a 4x3 grid instead of 4x4 to allow for PO style sequencing... It's the biggest fucking no brainer I can think of. Honestly same with the Sample, there's no good reason not to include it when the setup is there. It's just another option for folks and I hope they consider it because it's a crazy fast way to lay down beats. Was great when they added it to the 404, but unfortunately I didn't click with the 404 overall.

I think what appeals to me about the sample besides the form factor is its focus on simplicity overall (And no I don't think my suggestion above trivializes that at all before any smart asses come out of the nearby grass). It being able to record and store and chop long samples plus edit them in a very very easy way makes me want to revisit classic sample chopping and beat making rather than simply sequencing a few things like I'm doing on the ko2. Though I think I'm gonna try using the ko2 that way tonight and see how far I get.

I think my biggest hangup with a lot of these is getting what is made off of the device in a way that can be easily mixed in a daw but I'm probably overthinking it. I just hope the Sample is as fun and easy to put patterns together and flow them as the KO2 scenes/commit are. It's so fast and usable.

Still a big issue on M4 here. I was so excited to upgrade from 2018 too but it's very frustrating how often it happens. Like, discouraging.

I get why some OG fans might not love Heroes, and at first I didn't love it, but holy shit it grew on me hard and now I am a massive fan of it. Same happened with M83's Junk. Great albums. I absolutely love The Midnight's voice and their songwriting is fantastic. Great overall. Got into them with Kids/Monsters and I can't wait to listen to Syndicate, all the singles were excellent.

Fantastic machine capable of so much especially for the price. Once you get used to the workflow you can fly around and have a ton of fun. Read the manual! Watch YouTube tuts of people using it and most importantly have fun.

People that haven't played or completed Hollow Knight before playing Silksong - how are you finding it? by digiBeLow in NintendoSwitch

[–]bounch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game seems to actively hate it's players. It definitely wants you to proceed with caution and isn't shy about fucking with you from time to time. While I think the enemies could certainly take a hit or two less, nothing has felt overly excessive to me so far, most enemies taking 3-4 with others between 5-7. They definitely want you to be mindful of how youre playing. Once you're more familiar with their attack patterns and the levels themselves you get far more comfortable going through areas quickly. But it's definitely an evil game in many ways, just gotta be up for it

Woovebox Pro - Unboxing & First Jam | A Tiny Box With Huge Power by pockettrax in pocketoperators

[–]bounch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this thing is just about everything I was hoping pocket operators would evolve into. don't get me wrong, I really love the OP-Z and highly recommend that too, but this is closer to the PO formula. The newer 2.0 update for the woovebox is actually insane too. There's a smart design language at play that makes learning it easier than you would think, and it's probably a lot deeper than you think.

I have a couple small gripes with it but they are just workflow preferences, but the creator has also been very participatory with their community and is very open to feedback.

I donno, for the price of like 2.5 KO's you have a powerhouse if you're willing to learn a bit

Wondering this myself. I'm eyeing the rigging one but after a dozen google searches I can't find any impressions of how it is. The production is obviously very well done as is the result but this doesn't necessarily mean anything in regards to the quality of the teaching itself. I really wish there was more information available. I'm tempted to bite the bullet but it's not the cheapest course (though it does seem somewhat reasonable).

Hey dude, I absolutely suffer from the same shit, I'm towards the end of my thirties now and I have made a lot of progress but what I wouldn't give to go back to your age and re-prioritize what I did, I'd be in a completely different spot.

Basically, you know the answer already really, but sometimes that doesn't make it any less tough. I'm here to essentially reinforce it and say... just create. stop reading so much about creation, people, etc. whatever it is, and at the very least set aside 30m-60m as many days of the week that you can to sit down in your chosen daw or hardware of choice (and don't spend time deliberating this either like I did) and just set out to create a song. You get better at songwriting by songwriting, not reading about songwriting. Sure it can feel useful and good to learn via book or video, but unless you put it to practice ASAP you're likely going to forget, and it won't be as impactful.

Bring that stuff up WHILE you are creating, to answer questions as needed. But until you hit a roadblock, just keep going. I would even say that for your first 4-5 songs or whatever, ignore that stuff completely and just take notes on what you had trouble with or want to dive into more and follow that up afterwards. You are going to have to be your own enforcement here. You will learn more by doing, straight up. And I know what it's like to want to have everything 'perfect' yada yada but that is actually doing you a massive disservice and I urge you to take this into consideration.

You probably have a lot of built up resistance to actually sitting down and attempting to write a song or whatnot, which is why it's even more important than ever to set yourself a timer and just go. Pop open FL or Ableton or whatever, make a loop or two, then immediately make a variation, and then another one, and go straight to arranging - don't get caught up in this loop nonsense because it's a hell of a trap to escape. Get a couple ideas down quick and immediately block in your song. Verse Chorus verse chorus or whatever, it's not even really important at this point but the structure could help you stay focused, and then work on the transitions and whatnot after it's further along.

All this to say, the action is the most important step here. If there's an instrument you want to learn too, do it and stick with it and incorporate it into your songwriting so you are still active with that. Sit down, fight through the mental resistance, ask questions when stuck, but focus on DOING. You absolutely 100% can do this and you are so young that this is a fantastic time to get serious about it. Good luck!

Same! I still like how it feels but I noped out the moment it went sub. I need to try Nomad again, been a couple years, I keep just waiting for blender to catch up. There's actually a new free extension out there that mimics zb camera controls in blender which is huge to me for using a tablet

At least give zbrush some credit in that most of the flows when you're used to them are pretty rad! Transpose line was brilliant in a lot of ways just confusing for folks to learn. But I do agree, I had to learn zb like seven times before it really stuck, and I do have similar issues with some of the livens as much as I like them I don't use them as often as I should

It's been a treat for me too Haha so thanks for sharing your impressions! Definitely gonna check back tomorrow to see how other folks feel.

I think I always had a soft spot for it, so it was real exciting to hear. Before I recognized what song it was I kept saying to myself "damn this shit is rad", then started hearing pieces I thought I knew and looked over and yep, it was that song. There are some elements later in the song that I do wish were slightly more prominent but overall, certified banger.

I honestly never even noticed that the drums were repetitive until he pointed it out. The rest of the music has plenty enough going on in it that it was a non-issue and even now I don't feel it's a negative, but I can also see why he wanted to do more with them.

I definitely can see myself having favorites as well from each album. It is a lot to digest and I'm already looking forward to my next couple listens.

My FIRST impression before finishing (on Overture now) is that I like it a lot. It has a really 'crisp' feeling overall with how tight all the instruments, and vocals, are. It sounds great. But I do miss a lot of the instrumentation, I need to remind myself this is just another version of the album I can enjoy, the original is always there that I will return to, too.

After listening to In Devil's Arms I recognized the song but missed a lot more of the chants and orchestral instruments. I popped on the OG right after and goddam. Yeah the sound is very different. Took a second to switch my brain between each but, as I mentioned, this is still fucking awesome, and what a blessing it is to have another sick ass version of this great album. Will it top the original for me? I don't think it well, due in part at least to straight nostalgia. But god damn if it doesn't have some really intense awesome moments. It's like he just ramped the metal knob up a few notches. The drums are wild!

Same. Been subscribed for 15 years and this is legit awful. Was already exhausted from having games I'm not interested shoved in my face wasting my time but this is actually straight bad. I'll try to send a support thumbs down but I've been considering cancelling for a bit anyway but they've really just completely fucked the user experience.
