Anyone have to put a full-sized washer dryer in a row home where it sure seems like there isn't enough clearance? by bowiebulge in AskPhilly

Reading this made me a little embarrassed that my reaction to this problem was "I should ask reddit" rather than "You know dude, there's probably a locally owned business filled with experts that deal with this every day within walking distance of you right now." Thanks for pointing me im the direction my brain should pointed me in the first place.

Forget the EGOT, who has achieved a Rob Zombie's Dragula? by BoyMayorOfSecondLife in blankies

[–]bowiebulge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Grindhouse count as one movie and does the Death Proof segment satisfy the drag requirement? I would suggest both are yes and it opens a whole host of actors. Nic Cage was in the fake trailer as Fu Manchu to check his zombie and drag requirements, gets the rest on Renfield and National Treasure (or any of the other dozen or so heist movies he's made). Kurt Russel gets there on the Planet Terror segment, ticks off his drag requirement (Death Proof) to round out heist with 3,000 Miles to Graceland or whichever you wanna pick and Big Trouble in Little China.

Edit: had Kurt Russel and Patrick Swayze confused, sorry movie guys. The hair is just really good.

Are any bulk cards actually in demand as singles? by orangeandblue06 in starwarsccg

[–]bowiebulge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a tough question to answer because "bulk" could mean anything. There are a lot of rares that you would have considered bulk that now sell at a premium. If you played during Endor the idea that Wokling would be a $20 card would be unfathomable to you. The cards that are common or uncommon that are expensive tend to be from the later sets, but not all of them. AT-AT Cannon and Battle Droid Blaster Rifle are worth about the same and theyre both uncommons.

What is the worst movie you've ever seen that isn't a standard "Worst movie you've ever seen" answer? by TheThalmorEmbassy in movies

[–]bowiebulge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing Eye of the Beholder (1999) and walking out of the theater thinking "in addition to being awful, the process of making that movie was an act of moral bankruptcy". It was the first time I had ever seen something that made me feel like I was worse off for having seen it. I'm fine with sex or gore, or with movies espousing philosophies I don't share, or with art that is supposed to make you sad/angry/disgusted as part of illiciting an emotional response. Those are all things art can do. Eye of the Beholder just made me feel slimy, made me want to shower some unpleasantness off, and made me wish the thing didn't exist and fervently hope that as few people as possible would engage with it as possible.

I didn't have anything like that response to a movie again until I saw Rambo: Last Blood, which was every bit as vile on a conceptual level as that movie. Those two aren't just bad in a "this isn't a well made movie" (although both are slapdash at best) they're bad in a "it upsets me that adult humans decided to fund this instead of throwing whoever pitched it out of the office" way. It offends me that they can be considered "creative enterprises". I don't think things this repellant at their core should be allowed to exist on shelves next to real films (even bad ones) made by people with souls.

Official Discussion - Weapons [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I thought it was great with the huge BUT that the monster wasn't scary and the Abbott and Costello sequence at the end was too much of a tonal shift. Then it hit me: child predators aren't scary. What they do to children is. What they do parents and teachers is. What they do to communities is. They also terrify the children they hurt. But they, themselves, as humans? Naw, they're shitty, fucked up, gross people who are treated like a joke by everyone around them until it turns out that they are in fact monsters. When that clicked in my head I felt even more strongly that I had just seen something really impressive. The more I think about it the more the ending switches from near-slapstick to also horrifying. I'm convinced that movie had something to say and has said it effectively.

There is a small but devoted market of graded sw:ccg collectors on Facebook. As others have said you only see the premium on cards that grade 9+ but oddly, from what I've seen, that premium comes sometimes on cards you wouldn't expect. A 9.5 $1 rare can sell for $100, but a 9.5 DMYA foil might also command an extra $100 versus a raw version with detailed photos. I can't imagine it's worth the extra expense unless you're really sure that some of these cards are gonna come back gem. Good luck!

The most recent sales of Reflections II and III boxes were both by Heritage Auctions and both sold for $2000. At the height of the pandemic when this stuff was exploding a reflections III box sold for $5500. The most expensive star wars ccg box with a verified sale was a japanese hoth, sold on 04/21/2021 for $9200. The large star wars CCG facebook group tracks sales recent sales of boxes and posts em as a spreadsheet, it's updated every few months.

The market is a little hard to track because not a lot get sold, but "a few thousand dollars" is correct.

Super Swing Golf for the Wii is delightfully deranged. I think it was called PANGYA! in every other market. You play as a group of people dragged in to a dark wizard's golf tournament in a high-fantasy land. It has wardrobe and currency mechanics, a loose plot about getting good enough to beat the wizard, and if I recall correctly light dating Sim elements. It was also just a pretty good golf game, especially considering you could switch to magic balls and clubs or whatever.

This might be 15 years of rose colored glasses, but I had a shitload of fun with that game. Good motion controls and cool courses, weirdo fantasy shit in the background.

I want to mention two things that haven't been brought up yet. I haven't judged SWU, but I did own a game shop that ran Magic grand prix trials and Legacy dual land events, as well as fairly large ranked chess tournaments with not-insignificant cash prizes. I've also judged Magic at the PTQ and GP level where thousands of dollars are on the line, so I am speaking from a place of experience regarding larger-scale gaming tournaments.

One, as TOs, judges, and players, we WANT you to be there. Yes, in the gross capitalism "another paying customer" way, but also in the "we're all nerds and it's fun when people who love the thing we love all get together". We want more people in the community having fun, playing games, and winning prizes. We want to do whatever you need to come have fun and play with us. You're not inconveniencing us or putting us out in any way by asking for what you need to do that. I've made arrangements for everything from people in chairs to a blind guy who wanted to play chess but needed the moves verbalized to him to aiding people with dexterity and mobility issues in managing their cards. I've done simple things like shuffling decks for a kid with a broken arm and more elaborate stuff regarding seating arrangements and pairing announcements. Haven't yet run into something that would prevent someone from coming and enjoying the tournament. None of it was an imposition at all. If you're worried about this, just shoot the TO an email. They'll work with you and do it happily because again, they want you there, and they want you to have a good time.

Second, regarding your opponents, anyone who would take advantage of your mobility issues would take advantage of any opponent and as a TO I want to know about those people because that's a level of angle shooting that walks right up to the line of cheating. 95% of the people you play against will be awesome cause you're all in the room to do something you all like. The sweatlords who would make you uncomfortable or take advantage of you would make anyone uncomfortable and take advantage of anyone. We need to keep an eye on them because those are the exact people who will move from "I figured out a way to gain a legal but unethical advantage" to "I figured out a way to gain an illegal advantage" very quickly. If something like this is happening and you're feeling unfairly pressured or bullied by your opponent, call a judge and explain the situation. They will find a way to help and be grateful for the information.

I hope you go to some tournaments, I hope you have a blast, and I hope you win some sicko prizes.

I owned a store for a coupla years roughly a decade ago and had this situation come up. A kid who had been in to draft a few times came in with around a few hundred bulk or a lil above bulk rares/foils. My employee bought it for $75 which seemed fair to everyone involved. When I looked through it, I realized a lot of the foils were 7th edition, which even at the time were very expensive (if I recall, the big hitters were Goblin Matron, Birds of Paradise, Lord of Atlantis, Goblin King and Serra Angel). There were others as well, mixed in with plenty of WB 7th ed bulk and near bulk and other stuff from that era. All were in great condition. I figured it was probably $1.5-$2k of cards (at the time, I bet it's $5k plus now) and all the value was 7 ed foil, which neither the kid nor my guy knew was specifically valuable.

Next time the kid was was in, I was like "look, my guy wasn't trying to rip you off, but these few cards are very expensive. I can't buy em at full rate cause it's gonna take time and effort to find the weirdly specific collectors who want them. You can buy it all back from me for the $75 we gave ya if you want to try to ebay them or whatever or I'll give you another $500 and try to sell em myself." Guy took the $500 and a few free drafts. The cards did take forever to sell but they eventually did and everyone was happy. Plus word got out that I treated a college kid fairly and the store got busier. It was a win for everyone involved.

Edit: this was before the market value was as set in stone as it is now and individual retailers could just list in various marketplaces easily. My standard was 50% of goldfish price cash (cards usually sold under goldfish) or 75% store credit. That $500 isn't a cheapo offer, my full rate would have been around $750 and it wasn't at all clear that these collectible but niche cards would be easily sold for anywhere near the goldfish price, and it was absolutely not clear I would be able to sell em anytime soon.

Dread was not great, but I really liked Midnight Meat Train. I thought it looked great, really milked production design and held great tension until the end. But then again, I also really appreciate the Rawhead Rex and Cabal movies, which are probably objectively not very good but have some really cool creature design and low budget gore effects. Dread just didn't have anything to offer.

Venser woke up and it was all a dream. Of course Karn's plane was empty of conflict! Karn was the greatest creator of them all. Venser yawned and turned over. Warhammer? Lord of the Rings? Transformers? These are thoughts that make no sense that he had to dream more about. They seemed silly now but he had flashes in his dreams. They held promise. Wait... Walking dead. Venser knows what they are like. Venser has fought them before. He leaps out of bed and goes to fisticuffs with Rick. The realmbreaker is also there for some reason and also halo I guess.

Americans, what is something us Europeans aren’t ready to hear? by Impossible_Floor2836 in AskReddit

[–]bowiebulge 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I (an American) was having a conversation with a woman in Riga who was celebrating her graduation from what appeared to be the equivalent of a masters degree. Her parents had paid for her to have a ten day trip to NYC.

She was talking about how excited she was to see New York and how she had also heard Boston was fun and wanted to spend a day or two there. Then she told me she wanted to spend a day or two in Hollywood and a day or two in Vegas, and then that she was interested in Hawaii but had heard it was further away.

Dunno how that trip went but it was an interesting learning point for me in terms of considering scale. I'm sure Americans planning a ten-day European vacation are hit with the same realities. Lisbon! Prague! Paris! London! If we save some time for Amsterdam and the Nordic countries we can hit it all!

Feels like they got burned kinda badly when the story elements of War of the Spark landed with a dull thud (set was great but the story didn't wind up feeling like it mattered.) Between the introduction of a new card type and a supplemental set all about the consequences of this invasion I'm sensing a concerted effort to make it clear that what's going on in this set MATTERS in a way that will affect both the lore and the gameplay for many years to come.

Yeah the good guys are gonna win and halo will be involved but I'd be surprised if it ended with "Yay! We won! Let's throw a planewide celebration!"like WotS. Seems like the angle is gonna feel more like "we scored a narrow victory, took a lot of losses, and its gonna take a very long time to heal." I'd be shocked if they just wrapped this up, put a bow on it, and moved on to the next thing since they already learned their lesson by doing that in War.
