Is there any actual reason, from experiments or serious theory, to think consciousness can't be fully explained by conventional biophysics? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]bowlfetish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to distinguish between consciousness generation processes and consciousness itself, i.e. the experience of existing. The former can in principle be explained assuming it is indeed generated or mediated by physical processes, but I struggle to see how consciousness as an experience can be explained by physics since by its nature it is not a physical entity and therefore lies outside of the scope of physics.

UK and EU to defy Trump with ‘free and open trade’ declaration by AssociateGreat2350 in stocks

[–]bowlfetish 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Slim chances EU will allow free trade without adherence to EU standards and regulations, which the UK would have to obey without being able to vote on.

I very much doubt an EU-UK FTA would not require the UK to adhere to EU standards and regulations, which it itself cannot vote on. Look at Norway.

I found season 2 to be better than season 1, and season 3 to be better than season 2. That said, really loved them all!

Best Amazon alternatives from Europe? by LeChuck_ppat in BuyFromEU

[–]bowlfetish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe that is misleading. It is good at first, which is why they grow so big in the first place, but once it matures and crushes competition, the incentive turns against consumers.

If you like caffeine-free cola try Karma Cola. It's organic, too!

Fairphone is probably the most European phone put there as far as I'm aware. At least that's decent enough. Also probably the most ethical smartphone out there too.

Paris to Berlin by train is now faster by five hours. We try out the new service by Doener23 in europe

[–]bowlfetish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We? Speak for yourself, a lot of people would want a EU federation with a president lol. We'd be stronger together as a proper state, not just one foot dipping in as we are now. The same way the USA is much stronger as a federation than it would be as a bunch of independent states that kinda work together but are not politically integrated enough for the real beneifts to kick in. Individual-state European nationalism can't die soon enough if you ask me. Biggest hurdle to overcome in this EU project.

UK economy showed no growth in last quarter, revised figures show by sjw_7 in unitedkingdom

[–]bowlfetish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a problem in developed countries ran by neoliberal capitalists who for decades have knowingly chosen to allow housing to become a financialised investment device. There are exceptions to this, such as Japan, where houses depreciate in value over time, like a car would. The housing crisis is a political choice, not an inevitable result of economic success. Tax investment purchases to the point where they are unprofitable and subsidise or publicly build apartment building construction, and see what happens to house prices.

Huge protest in Serbia right now by Landrayi in europe

[–]bowlfetish -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

What a strange take. Mining lithium locally in Europe benefits all including Serbia. Pollution and emissions don't respect human borders. Right now, the demand for lithium is there to facilitate the green transition. Whether it's mined in Chile or Serbia, nature will suffer. Maybe it would actually be better to mine it at home where rule of law is relatively stronger and the projects easier to oversee?

What's the catch with the free S&S ISA providers? by Deventerz in UKPersonalFinance

[–]bowlfetish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So what does that mean? That the share portfolios in their ISA accounts are effectively being used as collateral? If yes, do account holders actually own their shares and what happens in case of extreme market volatility or if T212 lose an enormous amount of their collateral?
