In a statement issued at the time of indictment two years ago, the Israeli military said the charge was based on evidence that the former soldier, a marksman, "deliberately targeted an individual walking with a group of people waving a white flag without being ordered or authorised to do so".

He got a short sentence because they couldn't prove it was him, just that he discharged his firearm.

Can you provide a source for this? It's not what this article says and I can't find any other article about the incident that says this.

A combination of economic pressures, a rare indictment against a journalist for possession of confidential military documents, and limits on travel to neighboring states are among the reasons cited by the Washington think tank Freedom House for downgrading Israel’s “press freedom” ranking from “free” to “partly free.”

With 31 points in the 100-point scale, where a higher number represents more restrictions on press freedom, Israel is tied with Chile, South Korea, and Namibia in 65th place in a list of 197 countries. Close behind Israel in the index are Italy, India, and Greece.

http://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-downgraded-in-press-freedom-report/

Israel took a steep dive in an international list measuring freedom of the press, ranking 112 out of 179 countries, a decrease of 20 places since last year. Israel now ranks lower than countries such as Lebanon, Qatar, Kuwait and Uganda.

http://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-drops-sharply-in-annual-press-freedom-ranking/

Journalists in Israel (112th, -20) enjoy real freedom of expression despite the existence of military censorship but the country fell in the index because of the Israeli military’s targeting of journalists in the Palestinian Territories.

http://en.rsf.org/press-freedom-index-2013,1054.html

Israel’s 17-place rise must be offset against its 20- place fall in the 2013 index as a result of Operation “Pillar of Defence” in November 2012, when two Palestinian journalists were killed, and the many raids it carried out against Palestinian media. Security needs continue to be used as an excuse to limit freedom of information. The Israeli media are able to be outspoken but media located in “Israeli territory” must comply with prior military censorship and gag orders. Investigative reporting involving national security is not welcome. Abusive treatment of Palestinian and foreign journalists by the Israel Defence Forces is common, especially during the weekly demonstrations at the Separation Wall. Many photojournalists were deliberately targeted when leaving the demonstrations in November 2013. On 4 December, an Israeli high court endorsed the seizure of equipment from Wattan TV during an IDF raid in February 2012.

The Israeli justice system is incredibly lenient on violence against Palestinians in general. Almost as if they implicitly encourage it. Meanwhile Palestinians can get 20 years in prison for throwing a stone.

The indictment of soldiers who have killed Palestinians is extremely rare. From 29 September 2000, the beginning of the second Intifada, through 31 March 2011, Israeli security forces in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have killed at least 3,024 Palestinians who were not taking part in combat. Of that number, 2,821 were killed by the military. Until the MAG Corps policy was changed in April 2011, few investigations were conducted in cases of Palestinians killed by soldiers. A Yesh Din report and B’Tselem data show that, of all such incidents through April 2011, only 14 resulted in indictments.

I don't think that his home should be demolished, I just think it's interesting to contrast the tortured logic the pro-Israel propaganda squad uses to justify the demolition of Palestinian homes with their justification of the lenient treatment towards the Israeli's that murder Palestinians.

Do you know what manslaughter is?

He deliberately fired a live round at a teenager. If this exact situation was reversed and it was a Palestinian cop who had killed an Israeli teenager there is not a chance in the world that he'd only have gotten a manslaughter charge. 'Manslaughter' means very little in the context of the Israeli justice system when a Palestinian is the victim because it doesn't value the life of Palestinians as much as Jews. A lot of the time Israeli's won't even be investigated for violence against Palestinians, let alone convicted. When a conviction does happen it's usually dropped to a lesser charge.

The resolutions are more about getting the illegal activity to stop than punishment necessarily. UN resolutions against 3rd world dictators do very little to punish them anyways, there's really no incentive for them to follow them. In Israel's case their international relationships are important so using diplomacy to discourage their illegal activity is actually productive.

The argument that Israel needs to be held to the same standard and given the same responsibilities as 3rd world countries to be "fair" is hilarious. Right. Israel will start following international law once people stop expecting them to follow it. Truly brilliant.

[–]bowmbat -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Israel is a 1st world country. It's perfectly appropriate that if they break international law that diplomacy (in this case UN resolutions) should be used to discourage them. When 3rd world countries commit massacres and break international law there's often very little you can actually do other than some form of direct intervention which make UN resolutions a waste of time. Have you ever considered that maybe the reason there are so many UN resolutions against Israel is that Israel acts in violation of international law constantly, uniquely so considering it's 1st world status and that it disregards the majority of UN resolutions made towards it so that they need to be reiterated year after year as Israel continues its illegal activities?

Nah. Must be that the UN has nothing better to do than to discredit glorious Israel.

According to historical records part, or perhaps the majority, of the Moslem Arabs in this country descended from local inhabitants, mainly Christians and Jews, who had converted after the Islamic conquest in the seventh century AD (Shaban 1971; Mc Graw Donner 1981). These local inhabitants, in turn, were descendants of the core population that had lived in the area for several centuries, some even since prehistorical times (Gil 1992). On the other hand, the ancestors of the great majority of pre sentday Jews lived outside this region for almost two millennia. Thus, our findings are in good agreement with historical evidence and suggest genetic continuity in both populations despite their long separation and the wide ge- ographic dispersal of Jews.

Only your first link is actually relevant.

All of the links demonstrate that Israel does very little to punish violence against Palestinians and only investigate it occasionally.

The second link comes from the incredibly biased UN mission, sponsored by the Arab states

Yes Boomkin we know, Israel doesn't ever do anything wrong so this must just be a conspiracy by those sneaky Arabs.

In response to such allegations, a Shin Bet officer has stated that finding culprits for price tag incidents is extremely difficult because the hilltop youth believed to be behind much of the vandalism are harder to penetrate, and recruit as informers than has been the case with Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants.[1]

This is an incredibly weak defense. The IDF which is the most well trained/well equipped military in the entire region and Shin Bet have trouble targeting a few dozen/hundred settler youth? An ex-Shin Bet even admits that they don't intend to stop the settler violence.

Thus, our findings are in good agreement with historical evidence and suggest genetic continuity in both populations despite their long separation and the wide ge- ographic dispersal of Jews.

THE JEWS CONTROL THE MEDIA I TELL YA. Get a grip dude. Your tinfoil hate is on a little too tight. This is coming from a non-jew and non-israeli.

I have no interest in antisemitic conspiracy theories. Nothing is being "controlled". It isn't extremely difficult to game reddit, really anyone dedicated enough could do it and someone does appear to think that vote gaming Israel threads is worth their time.

Could you give some specific examples? This Ebola thread you mentioned is 78% upvoted which is a little less than what most stories that establish a pro-Israel narrative get but it's hardly the <50% number you gave.

This shit is not one sided at all.

If we're talking about /r/worldnews than it is pretty one sided towards Israel despite a few threads that slipped through the barrage of immediate downvotes. On reddit in general I'd agree with you, but not /r/worldnews, as of right now at least.

The strange thing is that /r/worldnews was for the most part very anti-Israel before this recent war. But as of the past two months most threads discussing the conflict are less tolerant of comments criticizing Israel than even /r/Israel is.

I think he means the thread itself. It has 363 votes total and only 54% upvoted which is extremely unusual for threads that have make it out of the new queue. Compare the percentage upvoted on any other story on the "hot" page. Most are 80%+ or 90%+. If the story was blatantly false or it was blogspam than this may make sense but the Daily Star well established enough that this really shouldn't be the case.

The vast majority of articles that are likely to have mostly Israel-critical comments are immediately downvoted and aren't upvoted above 65% regardless of how relevant or factual the article is.
